1990 The Philadelphia Inquirer Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Thursday, May 10, OBITUARIES 22-D Joseph A. Tumelty, 85, career sports journalist Joseph A. Tumelty, 85, a sportswrit-er and broadcaster during the 1920s and '30s, died Monday at Fair Acres Geriatric Center. Middletown Town-ship, Delaware County. He lived in Lansdowne.

Mr. Tumelty retired from his sports journalism career in 1971 after 40 years as an assistant sports editor at The Inquirer. Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Mr. Tumelty graduated from Roman Catholic High School in 1921 and attended Villanova University. As a boy, he worked at Shibe Park, working the scoreboard during Philadelphia Athletics baseball games.

He joined the Public Ledger in the mid-1920s, traveling with and writing on the Athletics, and later wrote for the Philadelphia Record. During the 19.30s, Mr. Tumelty hosted a radio talk show. He interviewed sports figures and other celebrities, including Gene Autry, and ran sports trivia contests. "He announced my birth on the air," said his son.

Joseph Jr. Mr. Tumelty was the second-oldest member of Philadelphia Sports Writers Association and in February, he W. R. May, 76; founded Glenside funeral home was honored at the group's banquet During the 1940s, he served as presi dent of the association, of which he had been a member for more than 60 years.

A member of St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church in Lansdowne, Mr, Tumelty was active in the church as an usher. He also took a leading role in the Philadelphia archdiocese's an nual charity drive. He was a member of the Santa Anna Council of the Knights of Columbus and the Serra Club. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Anne B.

Touey Tumelty; daughter, Sister Anne Fidelis I.H.M.; son, Jo seph brother, Charles; three grandchildren, and two great-grand children. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 1 a.m. tomorrow at St Philomena Church, Baltimore and Highland Avenues in Lansdowne Viewing will be before the service. He will be buried at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Marple Township.

Donations may be made to Camilla Hall Infirmary, Immaculata, Pa 19345. merce and former member of the Glenside Kiwanis Club. He also was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Ushers Society of St. Luke's Church, Glenside.

He was a volunteer for numerous years in the Catholic Charity Appeal of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. His survivors include his wife, Mary C. McDermott May; daughters, Eileen Kiefer, Kathleen M. Seweryn and Sharon A. Etre; son Harry and 13 grandchildren.

A viewing will be held after 7 p.m. today at the May Funeral Home in Glenside. A Mass of Christian Burial will be sung at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Church of St. Luke the Evangelist, Kaston Road and Fairhill Avenue, Glenside.

Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham. Donations may be made to the Holy Redeemer Hospital Tower Fund, 1648 Huntingdon Pike. Meadowbrook, Pa. 19046. i a William R.

May, 76, founder of the William R. May Funeral Home in Glenside. died Tuesday at Holy Redeemer Hospital. A native of Philadelphia, he was a resident of Glenside for about 45 years. Mr.

May founded the funeral home that bears his name in 1948. The home, at Kaston Road and Keswick Avenue, is still run by the May family. Mr. May was a member of the National, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia County and Montgomery County funeral directors' associations. He was a Navy veteran of Word War II and was a member of American Legion Post 248 and North Penn VFW Post 676, both of Glenside.

He was a founding member of the Catholic War Veterans after World War II and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, James A. Flaherty Council 3128 of Glenside. and Archbishop Ryan General Assembly.
