For this reason the following article on what is termed common 6chool education is valuable. "In elementary education the three R's standing for reading, writing and 'rithmetic, are counted the essentials. The fourtn aud one of equal impoitance was probably not included becauso no twist of orthography would permit it to begin with an It, or perhaps spelling i3 included with reading. Certain it is that tie nun or woman who cannot npell correctly can not claim to have much education. There i no good or MiUieient for delicieccy iu this particularly in these days when schools are free and spelling bouks cheap.

There is nothing iu the worid hotter calculated to give an unfavorable impression of a correspondent than to receive a letter containing half a dozen mis-spelled words. Yet it is a lamentable fact that there are a great many letters carried by tho mails under two-cent postage stamps. A boy or girl should never be permitted to have a diploma, even upon completion of- the so-called common school course, who can not spell ninety-five out of every 100 words correctly, in a written examination. A state cf affairs has been discovered and brought to public notice at tho Northwestern University, an institution which claims great credit and glory for Its curriculum and its instruction. Advanced students taking writte examinations in Greek, chemistry, and other subjects spelled "shadow" with two "d's" "yield" with an ''a," "vil-lian" with one and "feet" with an whereupon the instructors who looked over the examination papers thought it was time to call a halt in higher education and turn backward time in its flight to make those young men boys again for more than one night, in which they would have opportunity to take a few lessons in spelling.

It is published in the Chicago papers, and hence must be so, that the inability of those college students to spell common English words made their examination papers almost unintelligible. Of course, it is not permissible for college students to employ stenographers to do their spelling for them. That is. something which all must do for themselves and can not be uniformly done by proxy. Education is a great thing, but the superstructure loses its value if the foundations are not solid.

Fatal Crossing Accident. Warren, the nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Palmer, COO sooth Chipman street, was instantly killed by a Michigan Central freight Sunday afternoon.

Tho accident occurred on the south Chipman street crossing of the Michigan Central railroad. Warren was alone at the time, although some other boys had been sliding down hill with him a few moments before. It is supposed the boy got on the train and in trying to get off caught his foot. The body was dragged seventy-five feet and terribly disfigured, the head and face being crushed to a pulp. Marshal Ross had the remains removed to Knapp Smith's undertaking rooms, where they were prepared for burial.

Interment took place Wednesday at St. Louis, the family's former home. Justice McCaughna impaneled the following jury which met at his office Tuesday, a coroner's inquest having been decided on: Aid. W. E.
