Fire visited I'liion college Schenectady, early Saturday morning and completely destroyed the section of old South college occupied hy the family of Prof, Kdward Kverett Hale, son of the late Dr. Edward Everett Hale. The college chapel and one of the dormitories were for a time seriously threatened, and it required the combined efforts of the entire fire department to save them. A servant girl had a timely rescue from the upper story which the flr-nien reached by ladders.

Prof. Hale and famil were out of the city. Many valuable relics and curios were destroyed. The chapel bells awoke the students at the college and they formed a relief brigade and removed many valuables from the burning building. The loss is estimated at about The burned building formerly contained class rooms for students, but lately was used ns a storehouse for curios and as a residence for Prof.

I 1 WW U1I4VMI rvww 4 Pickering Says Lowell's Idea that Mar tains Are Still Digging is Absurd Cambridge, Jan. 2.

Prof. William H. Pickering of Harvard University takes exception to the statements made by Dr. Percival Lowell, the Astronomer of Flagstaff, at the Convention of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences held in Iloston last week that there exist on Mars canals or system of passages made by nature or by human energy and workmanship. Prof.

Pickering in talking of Dr. Lowell's statement, said: "I don't believe that Prof. Unveil has made any new discovery of the growth of so-crflled canals on Mars, other than what I myself have ot-served. Many times I have watched these self-same so-called canals grow arid Hr. lmcll lias undoubtedly ob- I served the same ones as I have.

The idea, however, that new canals an being dug on Mars all the time is ab surd. "My view oik the matter is that i appearances of canals that the glass gives the astronomer are illusions caused by the grow th of a highly col i ored vegetation hich abounds on I the planet in rapidly growing rambl Ing beds. Prof. Lowell believes that are actual canals existing there and that they are now In process of const ruct ion at the hands of animate beings. He believes with me in th existence of the vegetation, but says it runs along the banks of the dit-chfls.

I cannot support the statement that there are human b'-'tngs 011 Mars, nor can I believe that there are actual ditches or canals on the planet. If there are canals there, my otit.v inference as to their origin is that Uiey are the results of volcanic disturbances. ''TheVe nomadic iou. cause. these worth, amount "Yes." Mr.
