ALLEN ROSSUM holds several team records for returns with the Atlanta Falcons.

DAVE MARTIN Press Steelers trade for returner Rossum The Associated Press PITTSBURGH The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired cornerback-kick re- turner Allen Rossum from the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday for a conditional 2008 draft pick. Rossum, a 2005 Pro Bowl player as a return specialist, holds Falcons team records for kickoff and punt return yards and also had two punt return touchdowns. The former Notre Dame player broke into the NFL as a third-round pick with Philadelphia in 1998 before being traded to Green Bay in 2000. He signed with Atlanta as a free agent in 2002. Rossum had a 59-yard kickoff return that set up a score in 24-19 exhibition victory over Cincinnati on Monday.

He had a concussion last week and did not return any kicks Thursday against Baltimore. Last season, Rossum averaged 7.8 yards on 37 punt returns, the lowest average of his career. He averaged 14 yards in 2003 and 12.4 in 2004. The Steelers tried several players as kickoff and punt returners without much success during the preseason a holdover problem from a season ago. They were 26th in the league in kickoff returns and 19th in punt returns during their five exhibition games.

Willie Reid, a second-year player from Florida State who was injured most of last season, was the most-used punt returner during the preseason but averaged only 6.5 yards on 12 returns. Last year, a fumbled punt by Ricardo Colclough led to an early season loss to Cincinnati and set the tone for a 2-6 start by the defending Super Bowl champions. NFL ROUNDUP Seymour shut down; Leftwich cut The Associated Press Richard Seymour, one of the top defensive linemen, was placed on the physically unable to perform list by New England on Saturday, meaning he must miss at least the first six games of the regular season. As is the custom of the secretive coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots did not specify wrong with the former All-Pro. But he withdrew from last Pro Bowl with elbow and groin problems.

Jacksonville meanwhile, did the expected, cutting quarterback Byron Leftwich. The seventh overall pick in the 2003 draft and the starting quarterback for nearly every game since then when he was healthy, Leftwich was released after losing the starting job to David Garrard. Coach Jack Del Rio had said Friday, when he made the decision, that Leftwich would either be traded or released but that announcement in itself made it difficult to make a deal for him. Leftwich, often troubled by injuries and lacking mobility, missed 10 games last season because of an ankle injury. He was 19-of-38 passing for 226 yards and a touchdown in three preseason games.

But he played with the starters while Garrard completed 36 of 47 passes for 456 yards and a touchdown mostly against backups. Garrard has started 18 regular-season games in his career and had a passer rating of 80.5 in 10 starts last season with 10 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. bittersweet Garrard said Friday when he heard that Leftwich would go. definitely shocked. I see this happening.

beyond shocked. I really feel like this is a dream, but I know not and I know Another former starting quarterback, Tampa Chris Simms, survived the cuts as the Bucs kept four quarterbacks. Simms missed most of last season with a spleen injury and was slow getting into form this year. Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith made the Baltimore Ravens as the third-string QB. In addition to putting Seymour on the PUP list, which he will be eligible to come off in six games, the Patriots also cut quarterback Vinny Tes- taverde, who at 43 would have been entering his 21st season in the NFL.

Elsewhere, In Cincinnati, No. 2 quarterback Doug Johnson was released and replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick, obtained in a trade from St. Louis. Johnson was dumped a day after he threw a pair of interceptions in a 14-6 preseason loss to Indianapolis, another poor showing that prompted the Bengals make the trade. The Bengals also made moves involving two of their players who have faced criminal charges.

They waived second-year receiver Reggie McNeal, who played quarterback at Texas and was learning a new position in Cincinnati. They kept second-year defensive end Frostee Rucker, who has been slowed by a hamstring injury during the preseason. In Philadelphia, former Olympic skier Jeremy Bloom was cut by Philadelphia along with Dirk Johnson, the punter last season. Bloom spent last season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Johnson was beaten out by Sav Rocca, a former Australian football player.

In Kansas City, former star running back Priest Holmes was placed on the football injury list, guaranteeing that his absence from the game will stretch to almost two years. Holmes, 33, played since Oct. 30, 2005, when a brutal hit from San Shawne Merriman aggravated a potentially dangerous spinal condition. The three-time Pro Bowl player spent last season at home in Texas. Oakland released third-round pick Quentin Moses, veteran fullback Zack Crockett and free- agent safety Donovin Darius.

Moses, the first pick of the third round, was competing for the starting right defensive end spot until late in the preseason. Tommy Kelly won the job when he moved from tackle after the Raiders acquired Gerard Warren from Denver and fifth-rounder Jay Richardson beat Moses out for the backup role. By keeping Warren on the roster, the Raiders must give Denver a fifth- round pick in next draft. In Detroit, running back Kevin Jones was removed from the physically unable to perform list, setting a day-to-day timetable for his return to the field. Jones missed the final three games of last season and all of training camp with a broken foot.

He had run for 689 yards and three touchdowns while catching 61 passes for 520 yards and two touchdowns. In Dallas, veteran cornerback Aaron contract was terminated by the Cowboys, who also put kicker Martin Gramatica on injured reserve. The Cowboys also cut 20 players, including rookie quarterbacks Matt Moore and Richard Bartel, to get to their roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players. All eight players drafted in April made the team, including rookie kicker Nick Folk. Glenn played 13 NFL seasons for the New York Jets (1994-2001), Houston (2002-04) and Dallas (2005-06), and was a Pro Bowl player in 2000 and 2001.

And in Baltimore, Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith made the Baltimore Ravens final roster Saturday as a third-string quarterback. Since arriving at training camp, Smith has impressed his teammates with his attitude, work ethic and arm strength while struggling with his accuracy and decision-making. Smith completed 11-of-18 passes for 86 yards in a 13-10 loss Friday night to the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome to conclude the preseason, but was sacked four times and intercepted once. By ANDREW BAGNATO AP College Football Writer Lloyd Carr started his career at Michigan by winning 10 of his first 11 games against Top 10 teams. He won a share of the 1997 national title, the first in nearly a half century.

Oh, and he lost to Appalachian State on Saturday. Guess which one be remembered for? Appalachian 34-32 victory over fifth-ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor sent shockwaves across Car Flag Nation on college first Saturday. But the most damage is likely to be felt in the Michigan football offices, where find the hottest seat in the country. The Wolverines entered this autumn, as they do every year, expecting to contend for the national title. Not this year.

Michigan can run the table the rest of the way not that we like its chances after Saturday and the Wolverines will be laughed out of every discussion about the BCS title game in New Orleans. And to think there were some people raise your hands, Michigan fans who thought the Wolverines deserved a berth in the BCS title game last January instead of Florida, which filleted Big Ten champion Ohio State. Off loss, clear that the Wolverines are more likely to spend the holidays someplace much less glamorous, such as San Antonio or Orlando. The question is, will Carr be there with them? From now until the end of the season, future will become fodder for every sports talk show in Michigan and the leading topic on every dot-com devoted to Maize and Blue football, and there are a few. It will become an issue every time a Michigan recruiter knocks on a door.

It will provide an unsettling background for dealings with the media, which are never warm in the best of times. what one hideous, unthinkable loss can do. result from the Big House no doubt brought a few smiles down in Columbus although shrewd Buckeyes fans might not want Michigan to relieve Carr, given his recent struggles against Jim Tressel. And the score had to raise spirits in South Bend, if only because it will bump Notre humiliating 33-3 loss to Georgia Tech off the front of the Sunday sports section. the way college football works.

One misery is celebration. Right now, Carr is feeling plenty of misery. The Appalachian State loss is a stark contrast to the start of tenure at Michigan in 1995. He took the job under uncomfortable circumstances the abrupt offseason firing of Gary Moeller, dismissed for off-the-field problems. Though he had scores of doubters from the start, Carr was the ultimate big-game coach early in his career and he was much more adept at winning the biggies than Bo Schembechler ever was.

From 1995, when he was hired, through Jan. 1, 1998, when Michigan beat Washington State to win the Associated Press poll title, Carr went 7-0 against Top 10. In an era of parity, unfathomable. At one point, Carr was 10-1 against the Top 10. And still 168 overall.

Carr has lost five of his last seven games against Top 10 teams. Given his fabulous start, some cooling off was to be expected. Carr has never been embraced by Michigan fans. To some, he was too conservative, unwilling to unleash his talent. After the Wolverines gritted out a close win over Ohio State on their way to the national title, a relieved Carr admitted that he had considered punting on third down several times late in the game and turning the game over to Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson and his defense.

He smiling when he said it. The 1997 national title only served to ratchet up expectations in Ann Arbor. Carr privately wondered if he could ever do enough to satisfy the Maize and Blue beast. But as long as Carr won, he could keep the critics at bay. His biggest sin, in the eyes of many Michigan fans, is that not Schembechler.

But who is? Carr, a loyal Schembechler assistant, was always uncomfortable with comparisons to his former boss. worth noting that Michigan is 0-3 since Schembechler died last November, having lost to Ohio State, Southern California and, now, Appalachian State. Michigan fans like losing to the Buckeyes and the Trojans. But no shame. Losing to Appalachian State well, another story.

And the kind of story that end with ever Carr soon live down this loss LLOYD grip on his job as the Michigan coach will be tested by the fans and media following his loss to Appalachian State. DUANE BURLESON Press.
