Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1984 The Philadelphia Inquirer 3 Sales of U.S, cars rose For the middle 10 days of November, U.S. carmakers sold 225,196 au-tos, up 28.8 percent from 174,861 a year earlier, Import companies were not includ- ed in the figures because they report their sales only once a month. For this year, the six major U.S. carmakers, have reported selling 1 7,204,130 autos, or 26,292 a day in 274 "official selling days, compared with.

6,018,338, or 22,045 a day in 273 offi-. cial selling days a year earlier. That works out to a gain of 19.3 percent in sales per day. American Motors Corp. car sales were down 9.6 percent in the period while its more-profitable Jeeps was selling at twice last year's rate.

Jeeps aren't included in the car-sales Jig- ures. Volkswagen of America Inc. sales were down 35.1 percent and Ameri-, can Honda Motor Co. Inc. sales ot its U.S -made cars were up 147 percent.

By Edward Miller Associoted Press gest year-to-year gain, with sales 62.2 percent above those of mid-November 1983. Ford Motor sales were up 50 percent. GM's rose 16.6 percent, ending five "consecutive 10-day sales periods in which it posted declines. However, last year's sales for mid-November were poor, and that helped boost the percentages this year for the Big Three. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales was about eight million for the period compared with a meager 6.2 million a year ago.

The numbers suggest that CM, while making a sales comeback, has not fully recovered from spot strikes in the United States in September and a nationwide 12-day strike In Canada in October. GM's market share for the period, 55.7 percent, was several points below where market analyst say it should be. DETROIT U.S. car sales, which were sluggish for two months because of strikes against General Mo-1 tors recovered strongly in-; mid-November, posting a 28.8 percent gain over the comparable peri-1 od in 1983, the automakers reported yesterday. For the period from Nov.

The number of subscriptions to WHT, an over-the-air pay TV service similar to Home Box Office (HBO), has fallen to about 4,400 at Channel 65 compared with more than 20,000 in late 1982. The decline parallels an industry trend of declining viewer interest in subscribing to over-the-air pay TV services. Sixteen subscription TV stations have shut down nationally in the last two years. WHT on Friday will stop offering its premium television service over Channel 65, according to a WRBV spokesman. So the current station management is faced with finding another source of evening programming or signing off early.

Milstead said he approached "hundreds" of potential buyers and ended up with three bids for Channel 65, including the bid from the Asbury Park Press that he filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court last week. One bidder, Arthur G. Camiolo, general manager of WHAT-AM and WWDB-FM in Philadelphia, yesterday said he had bid under $3 million for the station. LEASE IH Ml Mi 3-1.
