He lost his card the first year out, regained it last fall as Qualifying School co-medalist with the much-heralded but still struggling John Fought.

He missed the cut at Phoenix, his first try. The next three weeks, he earned modest checks, thwarted each time by one bad round. Then, at Tucson, Thorpe bunched four rounds in the 60s, tied for a second two strokes behind winner Bruce Lietzke, carried off a check for 518,667 and is now 15th on the PGA Tour's money list. Marty Fleckman was a big story in the 1967 U. S.

Open at Baltusrol. Then a 23-year-old amateur, he led after three rounds until he self-destructed with a final round 80 and finished 14 strokes behind winner Jack Nick-laus. That was excused when he won his first tournament as a pro later that year. He has never won since, but he's still out almost every week on winnings averaging less than $11,000 annually over 12 years. The IVB at Whitemarsh has been one of his major frustrations: he has qualified six times, never collected a penny in prize money.

Tucson may have relit the torch for Fleckman, now 35. He also strung together four rounds in the 60s and tied for fifth, his best performance in many years. ((Q)) PACE 8046 40 CHANNEL MOBILE Ity Fred By rod Special to The Inquirer Dick Hendrickson, a native of St. Louis who had served at three New Jersey clubs after moving here, is crossing the Delaware to become pro at Loch Nairn Golf Links, near Ken-nett Square on Route 1. For the past three years he was associated with Dick Smith in the operation of Wedgwood CC at Turnersville, N.

J. One of the game's tallest men at 6-feet 7-inches, Hendrickson was a teenage baseball pitcher in whom the old Philadelphia Athletics showed interest. He won the Philadelphia Open and PGA championships in 1972, repeated in the Open the following year, always is a tough Competitor. Hank Smedley, who with Dan Winter owns Loch Nairn, a semi-grivate club, plans to build 300 condominiums there within a year. I First as a player and then as an instructor, Joseph (Bud) Lewis has Been a stellar figure in golf here for more than three decades.

On April 1 he will formally retire as head pro at Manufacturers and will be succeeded by Bob Hibschman, his assistant for five years. Hibschman, 32, is a Penn State University graduate (1969) whose first pro job was at Lock Haven, Pa. He ranked sixth in the point competition among Philadelphia area pros last season. The 136 Lewis scored for 36 holes in winning the Philadelphia Open at lanerch in 1942 the first of four Sectional titles he achieved never has been bettered. Following his usual custom of wintering in Florida, Lewis is now teaching at a Delray club.

mmWmmWMinmmmtMmmmmm By Alex Rosen Special to The Inquirer Harry Bowen, a letter carrier in Pennsville, N. is breathing easier now that he has conquered that solid 10 pin, his only obstacle to rolling the 10th perfect game this season in Delaware Valley. Bowen rolled his 300 Feb. IS in the Thursday Night Community League at the Penn Bowl in Pennsville. The 10 pin has been the spoiler of many a 300 game for seasoned pros andrecreational bowlers.

"It's been haunting me for a long time," said Bowen, 32, who bowls in five leagues and carries averages from 205 to 218. "Recently I was hurt three times by it. "Two weeks ago, I had what looked like a fine hit in the first frame and, you guessed it. In the same game on the last throw, it happened again. I got 289.

It happened again the following week, and I got another 289. last week at Penn Bowl I opened with a 2S8 and might have yotten more, if not for the solid pin. I started the second game, kept get-1 ing into the pocket 11 strikes in a row then comes the final throw and before me loomed that No. 10. 1 had so many of them and, with my knees shaking, I felt I'd just let the ball out there.

I let go and stood there in a daze as the ball went true." Bowen, who has been bowling since graduating from high school, finished three games in 779, the highest scries in South Jersey. His 300 also helped in a 1,160 series, also a South Jersey high.
