Michigan has been a State for fifty years. France owes six billions of dol lars, nearly five times as much as the United States owes. The National Cemetery at Knox -vllle is to be approached by a road built by Government funds. An old man and his wife, who are said to have walked from the state of Missouri, shook hands with the President. Eli Owens, a rapist, was hanged In Alexandria, Illinois, at 3 o'clock on the morning of the 17th, by fifteen masked men.

Three counterfeiters of silver coin were arrested in Cincinnati on the 16th. They had in their posses sion $45 in counterfeit coin. An appropriation of $80,000 was made for the erection of a public building in Asheville N. by the Senate of the United States. Goodwin, Virginia, voted for local option on the 17th by a majority of 148.

The temperance people were much elated over their victory. Ben Butler, the notorious flopper, is said to be a candidate for Con gress on the Republican ticket. The chickens will come home to roost. Soap makers die as well as dirty people. James S.

Kirk, a soap man of Chicago, died on the 16th, leav ing a mil) inn dollars for his boys to spend. There is talk of uniting Brooklyn and New York cities under one municipality. This would lessen the cost of government and increase the size. President Cleveland begs for time to do his daily duty. So thick are the seekers of office that it becomes necessary to do this.

So passes the glory of the world. Minneapolis, Minnesota, is the largest flour producing city in the world. She has 22 mills, and her dally make of flour is 32,825 barrels. Last year she made 5,109,962 barrels of flour. The nomination of Taylor for Governor is largly endorsed by leading citizens from both parties.

Mr. "Taylor is a powerful man on the stuuip and is a man of integrity sober habits. The Chattanooga Gazette, a new paper just started, claims to be a revival of the old paper of that name, started in 1K)S. Well, blood and time may have something to dowith its success. A brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, says it has one man in their employ who drinks 100 glasses ofj beer per day.

The average amount per man is 40 glasses per day, or $100 worth of beer to all the hands. What a great waste of money! 'fitiie indication as to the final result of a vote on the merits of the Morrison Tariff bill was given on a motion to go into a committee of the whole on its consideration. The motion was made by Mr. Morrison and was defeated by a vote of 157 to 140. The Knoxville Tribune gives its readers another periodical editorial on the greatness, magnificence and stupendous capacity of Augusta, Georgia, for the natural and artificial advantages of this Queen of the South.

She is determined to see the glory and beauty of Solo mon's kingdom, that she may be enabled in the language of her royal highness of Sheba to declare that not half of the beauty and splendor has ever been told of the mountain city of East Tennessee. Augusta is a city of ten millions, and has forty railroads and is weeping for forty more. She is determined to reach Knoxville by a narrow-guage railroad built under the Blue Ridge, In order that there may be an easy entrance to the mines which are expected to be developed on the way. Her capacity for furnishing white sand and other natural commercial commodities are so great that Eastern capitalists are showering in her lap untold millions, so that these railroads are built without aid from any source, which suits the people of Knoxville The Platform adopted by the republicans in the State Gubernator ial Convention, is sound to the core It favoTB a protective tariff, endor ses the Blair bill, opposes the penitentiary lease, favoring the work ing of the short term convicts on the public roads, and long term convicts within the walls of the penitentiary, expresses condolence with Ireland, favors the repeal of the per capita road tax, and favors the submission of the prohibition amendment to be voted on by the people. Let the people of the state and the United States adopt this platform and we shall have good times again.

We are satisfied that the people will be ready to place the republicans back into power in 1888. With this view let every man go to the polls and vote for republican triumph. The best place for an advertise- ment is in a newspaper of large cir culation, ana of character and in fluence; and ninetenths of the money spent otherwise for adver tising is wasted, whether it is put handbills, in lithographs, or in circulars. The public read newspa pers, ami an important part of its news is its advertisements. Almost invariaoly they throw away the imiiuuuin unu i in uiiux in.

I nun A merchant should make adver tising a specialty. He should study it, just the same as he studies how to please his customers. During the dull season he should advertise specialties, to catch what few peo ple that make purchases. The Sun we believe to be right about using the columns of the newspaper, and in doing so the character, tone and circulation of the paper should al ways have the preference. The Dixie Powder Company, or ganized for the manufacture of dynamite, have quietly built their houses, placed their machinery, and will to-morrow turn on steam and begin the manufacture of dynamite cartridges.

The work has beeu conducted so quietly that but few persons knew it was going on. The capacity of the factory will be 2,500 pounds daily. The factory is located about six miles from the city on the Nashville Chattanooga railroad, near Wau-hatchie This is the only factory of the kind In the South. Nash ville Union, June 17. The Republicans have shown dis cretion in placing a full state ticket in the field.

We believe in maintaining a solid phalanx of the party. While we can hardly expect an election of the entire ticket yet we believe in the straight vote principle if part or all of the ticket should suffer defeat. A clean cut campaign fought equally upon merit of the candidates and parly princi ples is always more satisfactory and tends to strengthen party ties besides it is a stimulus to the parties to put forward the best men. The Republican ticket nominated by the Convention at Nashville on the 15th and 16th is certainly a strong one. Among the nominees for Supreme Judges are men who will compare favorably with the best legal talent in the state.

The nomination of Randolph from West Tennessee is highly spoken of by the democratic papers in that section. The nomination of Taylor for Governor is conceded by all to be the strongest one that could have been made. He will carry a large vote from the democracy throughout East Tennessee. The Knoxville Tribune says that Eastern capitalists are inquiring about the Emory Gap railroad, and says that progress is making towards the building of the road. An important decree has been entered in the chancery court at Chattf.nooga ordering the sale of $80,000 of bonds of the Lookout Water Company belonging to the es tate a the late Geo.

H. Haalehurst These bonds constitute the controll ing interest in the company and are sold for the benefit of the minor heirs of the deceased Geo. H. Haile- hurst. The bonds are now quoted at $1.20, this company being one or the best paying institutions in the city.

In applying commercial fertilisers to corn, potatoes, or other vegetables, by experimenting it will be found that the best system is to apply it at different times during the growing season, as the value of the first application is often lost by being carried off from the roots by being liquified. After testing the proper quantity, divide it into two or more parts and use as the character of the season would seem to demand, wet seasons requiring more applications than dry ones. The railroad election in Sevier County developed the fact that a majority of the people of the county were in favor of building a road from Tipton to Seviervifle. The vote stood 1,200 for taxation and 1,063 against it. It required two-thirds of the vote given to authorize the taxation, which would have been 1,508 votes for and 754 against The county really made a better showing than we expected, for such a line of road.

Two hundred and forty-eight delegates, returning from the Democratic Judicial Convention, voted on their choice for Governor. Di-brell headed the list with 83 votes, McConnell 65, our dear Tom Williams received 13, Henderson 33, and Bob Taylor, a younger brother of the nex Governor of Tennessee, 46 votes. A number of distinguished men, whose names they called scattering, received 18. In case the democracy should nominate Bob Taylor for Governor it would produce a striking campaign. Of the two, Alf is much the abler man in every respect Bob and the democracy realise this, hence Robert will have to be content with hi9 little pension office.

Nashville Convention. The Times furnished its readers last week with a list of the candi-l dates nominated at the Convention. In less than two hours after the nominations were made the Times contained the ticket and was being mailed. The Convention was largely attended by representatives from different parts of the state. After considerable debate it was determined to place a full ticket in the field and work for its success.

In the Judicial Convention a ballot was taken, which when at last announced after some changes of votes were made, showed the following result: Randolph, 690; Mur ray, 639; Warder, 516; Watson, 495 1-9; Baxter, 500; Buhm, 176f; Smithson, 159 11-18; Marshall, 92 8 10; Kyle, 96; Muse, 46; Andrews, 10. On motion of Congressman Pet-tibone the nomination of Randolph, Murray, Warder, Watson and Baxter was made unanimous. Judge Smith, of Memphis, moved that Messrs. Randolph and Warder be the nominees from the state at large, Mr. Baxter from East Tennessee, Watson from Middle Tennessee and Murray from West Tennessee.

Carried. The Judicial Convention then ad journed sine die. In the Gubernatorial Convention Judge Smith, of Memphis, nomin ated 1). A. Nunn; R.

W. Austin nominated A. A. Taylor. Several spirited speeches were made ou either side, seconding these nominations.

After considerable delay a ballot was had, resulting as follows: Tay lor, 373; Nunn, 195. Before the ballot was closed, a motion was made to make the nom ination of Taylor unanimous. which was carried with a whoop. Responding to loud calls, Taylor came forward and made an eloquent speech, accepting the nomination, and was applauded enthusiastically. Nunn also made an eloquent speech, pledging himself to support the ticket The platform was adopted without discussion, except the clause reported by a majority of the committee favoring the sub mission of the prohibition amend ment, which provoked a lively dis cussion.

Earnest Simmerly, son of Jeffers 8iinerly, near Holston College, died last week from lock jaw. The little fellow was sitting on a fence, when by some means, he fell off, breaking an arm. rarts oi the fractured bone penetrated the muscles of his arm, which produced lock jaw and death before friends arrived. The largest trees in the world have been discovered growing south of the Sahara Desert, in Africa. Many of them are thirty feet in diameter.

The tree is called Braabab. Many persons live in these trees, for protection against wild beasts, having their huts constructed up amongst the large branches. Anjnouncem ents FOR ATTORHV UFAERAI.
