March 1, 1882. Few persons up here iu this elevated, mountainous portion of Tennessee have any idea of the terrible destruction and sullcring from the overflow of the Mississippi river. Many human beings have been drowned and many have starved because it was impossible to reach them in time and give them food. Their houses have been washed away aud their stock drowned. For hundreds of miles dead animals can be seen floating, and people urc huddled together on elevated points, without food or shelter.

The Government at Washiugtou und State governments are doing much to relieve the distressed, but thousands must perish. The overflow is terrible. The communication in our paper this week, signed "Democrat," is from the pen of oue who is not only able aud distinguished, but one who has never fal tered in devotion to the Democratic party and his people. We endorse ev ery word he says, and ask every Demo crat to carefully weigh his utterances. I'lie Home Journal is sincere in its wish for all Democrats to unite on some ground of honorable compromise and let extreme men, whether "high" or "low tax, so-called, go to the wall.
