McGARRITY in December 1977 Joseph Schmondiuk, Ukrainian archbishop By Josh Friedman Inquirer Staff Writer Archbishop Joseph Schmondiuk, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia and spiritual leader of the country's half-million Ukrainian Catholics, died Monday night at Albert Einstein Medical Center, northern divicion, after suffering a heart attack. Archbishop Schmondiuk, 66, was installed as head of the Philadelphia archdiocese in December 1977. The archdiocese comprises about 200,000 Ukrainian Catholics living south of New York and east of the Mississippi River.

Mr. Jeffries lived all his life in Philadelphia. He was a former board member of the Philadelphia Baptist Association, a past treasurer of the Olney Baptist Church and a member of the Investment Traders Association. He had served in the Army in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Lillian E.

Heher Jeffries; a brother, Edward, and three nieces. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Kester Funeral Home, 609 E. Allegheny Ave. Interment will be in East Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Samuel Goldberg Samuel Goldberg, 94, died Monday morning at Jefferson Hospital. He lived at 616 Courtland St. Mr. Goldberg came to Philadelphia 70 years ago from Lithuania. He waked for the Stetson Hat Co.

for many years and after retiring became an executive of Goldbe Marine Supply 202 Market a firm founded by his three sons. He was a member of Congregation Beth Uziel and of United Jewish Organizations. He is survived by three sons, Jack, Harry and Charles; a brother, Isaac, five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday at noon at Goldsteins', 6410 N. Broad St.

Louis E. Winter Louis E. Winter, 76, a plumbing contractor, died Monday at Lankenau Hospital. He lived at 1315 Drayton Lane, Wynnewood. Mr.

Winter was owner and operator of the L. E. Winter Plumbing Contracting Co. for 42 years. He retired 12 years ago.

He was a Mason and a member of the Lehigh Consistory. He is survived by his wife Eva Elstein Winter: a son. Cole- 7 daughter, Carl Loev, and a sist Services will be heid at 11 a.m Wednesday at Goldsteins, 6410 N. Broad St. will be in Montefiore Cemetery, Fox Chase.

The future archbishop and a brother were sent to St. Basil's Orphange in Philadelphia. He was graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School in 1930 and went to Rome, where he was ordained in 1936 after studying at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Seminary.

After his return to the United States, Father Schmondiuk served as pastor of Ukrainian Catholic churches in Rochester, N. Aliquippa, Passaic, N. and Hamtramck, Mich. In 1956, Father Schm ndiuk became the first native-born American to be elevated to the episcopate of the Ukrainian Catholic Church when he was named auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia. In 1961 he was sent to Stamford, Conn, as bishop, and he returned here in 1977.

Associates recalled Archbishop Schmondiuk as a very private man. He was a very pious and holy individual and a a a a a a a a a a very impressive person; he was not outgoing, not an extrovert," said Bishop Basil Loster, who su Archbishop Sc ndink in late 1977 as head of the Stamford diocese. Rankin, 73, a retired mechnical engineer, died Friday at Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point, N. J. He lived in Ocean City. Mr. Rankin, a native of Philadelthe Budd Co.

in Philadelphia from phia, worked as a plant engineer, for 1942 to 1967, when he retired and moved to Florida. He was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1927. In Florida, Mr. Rankin became a drafting teacher at the Lee County Vocational-Technical School in Fort Myers. He retired from this job in 1973 and moved to Ocean City in 1976.

Mr. Rankin is survived by two daughters, Diane R. Lankford, and Ruth David; two sisters, nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesdav at Kirk and Nice Funeral Home.
