We tremble sometimes when we think of the train robberies, murders and other crimes that are daily committed in this world so full of sin and misery. It would take acres of space I and ink of blood, with a dagger for a pen, to tell the atrocities of even one year. The m.vjority of the crimes are committed either iu the densely populated cities or on the sparsely settled frontiers.

As a general thingi cities of the size of Mexico are comparatively free from shocking deeds of any kind. It is something astonishing that in a refined city like Mexico, with so many schools with so many church spires, piercing the blua ether as they point the way Wise started, should be the scene of such a deed as we are about to chronicle. We shudder as we think of recording such an affair to be read by our no. we mean your children and your children's children. We hate to think what opinion they will have of matters and things in the times of their forefathers.

There is nothing so calculated to encourage crime in the young as the knowledge of deeds committed by their forefathers. Rev. Dr. Grasty delivered a discourse on "Revivals," preparatory to one on "Sanc tification" at night. In commencing, the Doctor said that revivals were connected in the popular mind with excitements; but eloquent appeals cannot produce true revivals. That had been often tried, and as often failure had been the significant result.

It is only tae church that can experi ence a scriptural revival. a rue revivals were connected with self-ex aminations. The soul aroused, re- npnta of sin and concludes hereatter to do what is right. Then the Lord goods. Last Monday moruiug helett home to attend his work.

Everybody felt at home and enjoyed a most pleasant evening, as only those do who visit Mr. and Mrs. Glandon. Joe. has just completed one of the most elegant and conven ient dwelling houses in Mexico, and on this evening the house was warm-! ed.

The supper was elegant and served in the most approved style. Some of the finest fruits in the way of pears, grapes and peaches we ever saw were among the many delicacies that ladened the groaning table. It is only such eutertainments as this that keeps a healthy tone to society. Young people should mingle together and become better acquain ted with each other in this way they improve each other and society at large. There is notuing thai uoes a town more credit than good society.

Mexico surely has this, as well as all other substantial attractions. We cannot close this article without noticing Mrs. Katie Glandon's fernery, a present from her brother-in-law, Birt Ringo. To all heathen it is a very serious matter to become christians. All of the latter sort that we have ever seen were conspicuous for their dignity, hut from among no other people, not excepting the sedate aad moon-eyed Chinamen, could a soiree nave oeen gotten up of converts more completely straight-haired or sitting more boltly upright, or more thoroughly pie-occupied, or looking more intent-lv ou the floor beneath them than these same Cberokees. Since the days of psalm-siuging by the Presbyte rians, in the times of Cromwell, there has been nothing on this orauy other tsontinent, to equal, much less excell them. The boys preseut were highly amused at f'eir seriousness and it was not without energy and perseverance that the president kept them from offending these highly sanctimo nious performers. Bovs ought to be more consider ate.

We know it is hard to suppress natural merriment, but it ought to be done, especially when christians make an exhibition of themselves. They ousht to consider that they occ upy land once owned by the forefathers of those they were disposed to laugh at, and are descended trom ancestors as savage, devilish and as mucn addicted to slaughter, dancing and fire-water, and even more so than the wild men of An.erica, and that much of what teirperance agitators aim to suppress is legitimately inheri ng from Saxon progenitors. The command to grow spiritually is as old as christiauitv. The soul is to add to its faith virtue, aud to virtue knowl- euge; and both the means and metn-od. for both justification and sanctification were laid down just as unequivocally in the old testament as 111 tli6 DGW The doctor then went on to say that no one could fully comprehend the uew testament without uilligent and prayerful 6tudy of the old. The two are one in purpose and one in spirit, and they are in perfect accord in everv vital part thereof.

The faith that justified Abel is identical in cs-ith that which justified Saul, that justifies vou aud me this day. And not only were Abel and Paul jus tified through the same faith, but the meritorious ground oi tncir.aivatiou was the same. The blood of Christ prevailed for both. The gonpel practically began in the garden of Eden, and the plan for man's recovery was too large a matter for the world in its infancy fully to comprehend. So God determined to put his rebellious creatures to school; to educate them sten hv sten: to understand the mys tery of godliness; to get ready to behold and to depend on God mauifest- in the fieh.

The coyeuant was, that the seed or the woman should bruise the serpent's head. It was to this seed and not to himself that fallen man was to look. It was God and-not man that provided the remedy. Now, it was for the purpose of introducing the idea of a coming Savior, and for familiarizing the neoyle with the thought of a great world-victim, a om-e-oflVring whose blod should cleanse from all siu, and with the design of flooding light on the atonement of cavalry, aud that God in the old testament days set up the taber- the family were sanctified, or set An Ordinance to Establish and apart.
