Michael Jordan is about winning games." Hot pursuit In their pursuit of Cubs pitcher Rick Sutcliffe, the Kansas City Royals are being aided by two of western Missouri's biggest broadcasting outlets. All day long and into the night, listeners are being asked to send cards and letters to Sutcliffe urging him to sign with the American League team. Radio stations have even given their listeners Sutcliffe's home address. It may be to no avail. In the eight years of free agency, the Royals have signed only one player other than their own: Jerry Terrell, a utility infielder, who was acquired at a modest price.

On the blink William Perry, the all-America middle guard at Clemson, weighs 340 pounds and is nicknamed "The Refrigerator," after an appliance he ap--parently has emptied often. But after Maryland beat Clemson, 41-23, on Saturday, Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post wrote: "Whenever Maryland needed yardage, it sent Alvin Blout, Tommy Neal and Rick Badanjek tiptoeing over the supine tummies of Perry and his 280-pound brother, Michael, for an amazing 406 yards rushing and 577 yards of total offense." Nonetheless, Perry proclaimed to the press afterward: "I had a great game." Said Boswell: "The Refrigerator's light must be out." 58-0, perhaps? Coaching a basketball team in the state where Dean Smith, the North Carolina coach, resides and works is no easy thing, says North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano. "My first week as coach at State," Valvano said, "I went to the barber. I sat down and the barber says to me, 'So, you're the new coach at State. Everybody's happy After just a handful of games as a Chicago Bull, Michael Jordan has his own sneakers line, his own clothing line, a multi-million dollar contract and a six-figure shoe deal.

If all this seems a bit sudden, no complaints have been heard in the Windy City. "There's no question he came along at the right time for us," said Bulls general manager Rod Thorn. "We were in a downward spiral for the last three years, a low ebb. Michael Jordan has refurbished this franchise. He has made the team better, he has that ability to make others look better.
