tyt I 4 iA WeVrij Aw4sia Crafty Maxim Threat to Fox By JOHN WEBSTER Philadelphia's first big ring battle of the season comes up one weelc from tomorrow night at Convention. Hall when Billy Fox. who has knocked out 49 of his 50 opponents, goes gunning for bigger game and attempts to bring down Joey Maxim, a crafty, well-armed heavyweight, in 10 rounds. Fox, a prominent contender for light-heavy honors, might be expected to prosper in facing husky, slow-moving fellows. In this situation, however, the young Philadelphia Negro is to be pitted against a slick, slippery antagonist from Cleveland, and probably would need a knockout to reach the winner's circle.

In the meantime, three boxing? programs are scheduled for the area this week, Southwark's popular Forte brothers are booked for a dou-blelheader attraction at the Met Thursday night; rugged Johnny will be paired with Danny Petro, Washington lightweight, for the final number, while the elder Forte, Tommy, is to oppose Petey Virgin, Schenectady N. crowd-pleaser, in the preceding Tuesday night brings two cards, one at the Cambria and the other in Camden. Dorsey Lay. West Philadelphia, faces Eddie White, Newark, in a lightweight eight-rounder that heads the give-and-take in Kensington. At the 114th Infantry Armory Huff and veteran Pedro Flrpo, rival across the Delaware, youthful Earl Camden lightweights, are to battl 10 rounds for South Jersey honors.

Fox, who is currently sharpening; at Summit N. may possess the power to flatten Maxim, but that remains to be seen. Only Curtis Sheppard has stopped Maxim a first-round score when Joey was caught cold and Maxim beat th Hatchet Man before and after that one. 1 S-v -v Jf gained 158 yards on the ground and passed for 78 more for a total of 234 yards. He was particularly out standing in the first half as he ran well and completed nine of 13 passes for 66 yards.

With Slosburg, tne Owls were a fast-moving eleven Without him they were befuddled, clumsy and impotent. It was "all Slosburg as the Owls scored their first touchdown. Start ing on his own 12-yard line, late in the first period. Phil passed and ran the Cherry and White to the 13-yard stripe before the session ended Opening the second quarter, he ran to the two-yard mark, and, from here, Gene Zawoiski plunged over, ORSECK SCORES Six minutes later, with the ball again deep in Temple territory, Slos burg broke through center, ride stepped and fought off seven Orange tacklers. swerved to the right, shook off another Syracuse man and set sail for the goal.

The speedy Bob Schlffner, Syracuse left end, set out in pursuit and caught Slosburg at the two-yard mark. But a moment later, Chet Orseck plunged over and Temple led. 12-0. At this moment, the Owls seemed supreme. Little did they realize the disaster that awaited them.

Paul Dubenetzky touched it off when he fumbled a punt on his 28 and Angelo Acocella recovered for Syracuse. In two smashes at the cenr of the Owl line, Lee Buchsbaum went to the four and Eddie Dolan smashed over. SLOVENS I GOES 22 Encouraged by this turn, Syracuse came out for the second half a new team, fighting, driving with a confidence that could not be denied. Dolan intercepted a pass at midfield to start the machine rolling and. on the Owl 28, Dolan tossed a short lateral to Walter Slovenski.

The Temple secondary was caught flat-footed and Slovenski ran to the six before he was thrown out of bounds. Dolan then went over for the score. The third Syracuse touchdown in the fourth period was even more heartbreaking. Dubenetsky was trapped behind the line trying to pass. In desperation he threw the ball toward the Syracuse goal.

John Herlihy, a guard, intercepted it on the Temple 31 and ran unhindered to the goal. A the game drew to a close, the Orange marched 50 more yards for their fourth touchdown with Slovenski slipping around his own left end for 15 yards and the final score.
