Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1981 Philadelphia Inquirer 7-D' Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Edith Head, most honored movie costume designer By Burr Van Atta Inquirer Staff Writer Edith Head, award-winning designer who clothed the stars during Hollywood's Golden Era, died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. Her attorney, John T. Piggot, said she had a rare bone disease myelofibrosis myeloid metaplasia, noncancerous destruction of the bone marrow. Miss Head, who concealed her illness and her age as successfully as her designs cloaked her clients' less than-perfect measurements, probably was 82, although estimates from studio officials and friends in Holly.

wood ran from a gallant low of 73 to a high of 85. The designer, who won eight Academy Awards for her costumes more than anyone else in Hollywood had been in and out of the hospital for a number of years, according to Herb Steinberg, Universal Studios vice president. He said that she had been suffering from a debilitating anemia for years and that doctors could not bring it under control. "She would go into the hospital for transfusions, come out and keep on working, then go back in he said. Steinberg said that she would have been 83 on Wednesday, the day set for her funeral Mass.

Piggot described her as indomitable. "Between hospitalizations, she would go on working, traveling around the country, putting on fashion shows, designing clothes for Vogue," he said. Miss Head, a tiny, bird-like figure whose dark bangs and ever-present tinted glasses were her trademarks, not only won more Oscars for indi- Roman Holiday, Sabrina, All About Eve, The Facts of Life and Samson and Delilah. Her last was for The Sting, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. She regarded the honor as her highest since it was awarded for a film with no female lead role.

She said she thoroughly enjoyed fitting Redford. "Unfortunately," she added, "men are so much more modest than women in the fitting room. An actress thinks nothing of removing all of her clothes. The men, Redford included, unfortunately, keep their shorts on. He even brought his children with him to the fittings." Miss Head's personal taste in clothing was conservative to an extreme.

She wore neutral colors, often black or beige, simply tailored cardigan jackets and skirts so timeless that she could and did, according to columnists wear her outfits for 15 years. She explained that she had no intention of competing with the styles she had created for the stars. Miss Head grew up in Searchlight, where, she said, "whiskey was cheaper than water." She escaped going to college. She earned a master's degree from Stanford University, taught Spanish, French and art during the day at Jolla Bishop School and studied fashion at night. She quickly decided that teachers were underpaid and looked for something better.

"I saw an ad in the (Los Times for a sketch artist $50 borrowed some sketches, lied to survive and went to work for C.B. DeMille," she said. She first break came when she designed clothes for, Mae West for the film She Done Wrong in 1933. Soon she was named chief designer for Paramount Pictures Studio. She leaves no survivors.

Services are to be private. vidual achievement than any other person in the film industry, she was nominated more frequently than anyone else. Friends said yesterday that she had been nominated for the award more than 30 times. She was the widow of Wiard B. Ihnen, a Hollywood set designer who twice was awarded Oscars.

Winning awards was not difficult, she said in autobiography, The Dress Doctor. "All I need is a script about a girl who isn't poor and doesn't hate clothes," she said. She said she had no problem working with studios such as Paramount and Universal and stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman and Marilyn Monroe. Miss Head's Oscar statuettes were awarded for costumes in such films as A Place in the Sun, The Heiress, Pete Reiser, ex-Dodgers outfielder Pete Reiser, 62, a fiercely competitive outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers and a slugger who won the National League batting title in 1941, died Sunday evening of a respiratory illness at his home outside Palm Springs, Calif. His death came a few hours after the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in the fifth game of the 1981 World Series, said family spokesman Keith Tuber.

Mr. Reiser's wife, Pat, said her husband was aware of the Dodgers' victory but had not been well enough to follow the Series. "He was laboring so for breath that he missed an awful lot of it," she said. "It was probably the best thing because to have Pete walking around with oxygen all the time would have been devastating. All things happen for the Tuber said that Mr.

Reiser "had wanted most of all to see his grandson baptized." Peter Brian Tuber, 3 months, was baptized Sunday morning. Mr. Reiser, who was born in St. Louis, led the National League in batting in his first full season with the Dodgers, batting .343 with 39 doubles, 17 triples and 14 home runs and scoring 117 runs. He led the league in stolen bases in Edith Head Winner of 8 Oscars IA Pete Reiser 1942 and 1946 and stole home seven times in 1946, a major league record.

He played in two World Series, 1941 and 1947, when the Dodgers lost to the Yankees. He retired as a player in 1952 and was a coach with the Dodgers from 1960-64 and later with the Chicago Cubs. His lifetime batting average was .295 in 861 games with Brooklyn, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. John C. Holm, 76, a actor, director and playwright John Cecil Holm, 76, a mainstay on Broadway and in Hollywood, died Saturday in Westerly, R.I., where he had made his home in recent years.

Mr. Holm was the son of a Philadelphia' electrical contractor. He was an actor, director, playwright, television personality and author whose career included soap operas, drawing-room comedy and serious drama. "But," he noted in later years, "no matter what the job, I always had fun." It was the "fun" of the theater that captivated him. Mr.

Holm had a middle-class childhood. "That means nothing much exciting happened," he once said. He went to West Philadelphia High and the Perkiomen School in Pennsbury and in 1924 enrolled in fine arts at the University of Pennsylvania. He was going to become an architect, he thought. Then he caught a glimmer of the glamour of the theater.

He was lured into Mask Wig productions at Penn. "In those days," he recalled, "they made the long tours private railroad cars, red-and-blue ice cream, debutantes waiting at every station." It wasn't until later, much later, he said, that he found out that show business was not quite so glamorous. "Ah, well, I guess I wouldn't have made much of an architect, anyway." But the theater did not make him starve his way onto the stage. A big, strapping redhead with a wide grin, he made it to Broadway in less than a year. His first role on Broadway was in The Devil Within.

Then came The Front Page, Whirlpool, The Up and Up, Dangerous Corner, Bloodstream and Wonder Boy, and in 1934 he was playing opposite Helen Hayes in Mary of Scotland. He wanted more, so he tried his hand at writing. He collaborated with George Abbott on Three Men on a Horse and followed it with Four Cents a Word, Best Foot Forward, Banjo Eyes and Brighten the Corner. He was considered a potential superstar when he came to the majors but the serious head injuries he suffered from running into the outfield walls several times ruined his career. The Dodgers' record book credits him with 11 full-tilt, head-first a assaults on the walls of Ebbets Field. Each crash resulted in serious injuries. He was carried from the home field so often that the Dodgers finally gave up and padded the walls. For Mr.

Reiser, winning was all that mattered. Records show that while at play he broke a bone in his right elbow and both ankles, tore cartilage in his left knee and repeatedly ripped the muscles in his left leg while sliding into base. He dislocated his left shoulder five times, broke his right collar bone once, suffered five skull fractures and seven concussions running into the walls. In 1952, after 13 years in the major leagues, he retired from the field, troubled by headaches, dizzy spells and a nervous stomach. But the injuries did not end there.

While coaching with the Dodgers and later, with the Cubs, he was always at the center, of every brawl. In an interview for Sports Illustrated in 1957, he said he didn't regret a moment of it all. "When people tell me I played too hard," he said, "I tell them that's how I got up to the majors." Survivors in addition to his wife and grandson include his daughters, Sally Reiser and Shirley Tuber. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St.
