E. church under the auspice of the Epworth League ai well attended and beartilj enjoyed br all. The fpe-cial feature of the evening' entertainment wan the soprano hoIoa by Mian Virginia X. Eastman, of Detroit, and her elections were delightful and the anticipation of the audience were fullj realised in this remarkable Tocalmt. Her voice clear and the tone is perfect and it appears to be as easr for her to sing the tcoet difficult selections as it is to converse.

Miss Eastman as on the program for four selections and she was required to appear in as many enthusiastic encores. Among the other numbers in the first part of the program was a piano selection by Prof. Q. L. Johnson, a tenor solo by Mr.

Alfred Nichols and a recitation by Mrs. James M. Merton, all of which were well rendered and thoroughly enjoyed. In the second half of the program, beside the selections by Miss Eastman, were a violin solo by Mr. Solomon, a vocal solo, "Slumber Song," by Mrs.

Whistler, a tenor solo by Trof. F. E. Andrews and a selection Imp the oelf organised Cluiuet Mandolin- aod guitar These numbers, were all very good and the club made a reputation tor first-class string music. The concert was a success financially and musically.

A Social KveaL The grand ball given by Heclu Lodge No. 90, 1. O. O. at the Calumet Light Guard Armory last eveniog was attended by about one hundred couples and all present had a most pleasant evening and enjoyed the dance thoroughly.

The party was given to celebrate the eleventh anniversary of tbe organization of the lodge in this city and tbe committee having the dance in charge left nothing undone to make the affair tbe success it was. Dancing was commenced early in the evening, and, with the exception of the intermission for supper, which was nerved shortly alter 12 o'clock, was kept up until early in the morning. The Daughters of Ilebeckah bad charge of the details and arrangements for serving tbe supper. Tbe spread set up by the ladies was first-class and they proved them selves caterers of no mean reputation. Karkeet's Ideal orchestra furnished music for tbe event and this well-known and popular musical organization strengthened its reputation for first-class dance music.

Mr. James Riney acted es prompter to the entire satisfaction of till concerned. Tbe dance was a success from a social standpoint and although not very largely attended, dancing as a real pleas ure and the party could have not been more enjoyable one. Heath of Mrs JobnL. Mclean.

Mrs. John L. McLean died last evening at 11 o'clock at th home of Mr. James (ireen, on Second and Kearsarge streets, Laurium. after a week's illnsss.

Mrs McLean was a daughter of tbe late Wil liam Anderson and leaves a husband and two children, one 5 years ot age and tbe other only a week old, to mourn her untimely end. She was 25 years of age on tbe 7th of last May and had been married about six years, and her loss is a great blow to the family. Tbe late Mrs. McLean was a member of Stella Lodge. and that, society will have Charge of tbe funeral, which will ho htld -on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from tbe First Presbyterian church, the Revs. Stalker and Morris officiating. Tbe body will be laid at rest in Lake View cemetery. Tournament of Race. The four medals to be offered by Manager Ulsetb, of the Park jce rink, have arrived and were on exhibition at the rink last evening.

The races are to be open to the county and all entries for them must be made to tbe manager before next Monday evening at 0 o'clock. There areto be four races on ns many dif-erent evenings and all will be tests of speedy skating. The first race ill be held next week if the weather will jH-rmit and one a week will be held after. The distance will be one mile, the inner of either race to be disqualified from contesting in the following ones, but so that all will be given a chance to make a record, no one but those who contest for tbe first ruedal will be allowed to enter for the other races. Wright, Danielsoc, Shannon, Matbeson, Profs. Solomon and Aradt and Master Albert Voelker. Digald Mi Sec. of Camp. Tbe Watck Returned. A watch was taken from a lady's hand bag at the Marcabee ball, the loss of which was advertised, with a request to leave it at tbe News office. This morning he watch was received per mail and which has been duly banded over to the owner.

The letter which accompanied the watch said it had been taken by a small boy. He that as it may, the person who took it shows by returning it he or she was sorry for Having perhaps jielded to a sudden temptation and consequently the letter and envelope which accompanied the watch has been burned, so that, so far a the Nkws is concerned, tbe sender could not be identified by writing. Avery pleasant dancing party was given in the Calunoet School Hall on Mday evening and attended by about seventy-fire young ladies and gentlemen and all report a pleasant time. Tbe party was gotten up and given in honor of Miss Watson, of Osceola, who leaves today on an extended trio and visit with friends and relatives ir rv rr. Colorado.

During tbe evening a dainty lunch was served by tbe young ladies assisted by Confectioner Joslin, wbicb was first-class in every respect. The party broke op in tbe early morning, all wishing Mis Watson a pleasant trip. Tbe German Aid society will celebrate tbe 25th anniversary of its orguniz uiun in this city on February 7, and a pleasant time is anticipated.

Tbe Hancock, Houghton and Lake Linden societies will attend and will be met at tbe depot at 2 o'clock in the afternoon by tbe locul society and the Fifth Regiment band and a procession will then be formed. In the evening dancing ill be hel I in the Opera House and Wilmers' nail and supper will be served in the latter ball. The Fifth Regiment band will furnish music for dancing. No invitations will be issued and tbe public is cordially invited to attend. Tickets, including supper, are per couple.

In Ion Meeting-, Tbe gymnasium and physical culture classes nt the Osceola, which have been practicing for the past four or five months under the direction ot Walford Hendrickson, are progressing rapidly. Tbe classes have not a great deal of apparatus and their quarters are not as convenient as might be, but the boys have the right spirit and are doing nicelv. An invitation has been extended to tbe members of the Calumet Y. M. C.
