Then, things got even more surreal as the sport's most popular driver Dale Earnhardt Jz drove to victory months after his father's death in the Daytona 500.

The lasting image of the afternoon was that of Earnhardt grabbing a large American flag from one of his crewmen and circling the 1-mile race track in the opposite direction to celebrate with his adoring fans. Still, there was a certain tension in the air that morning, "I was very secure in going," said Kris Heist, a race fan from Wyoming. "I felt it was more patriotic to go than not go. It was a great race, the crowd was psyched it was sold out, and it was just a great race the crowd was into it. Everybody had American flags, and Cal Ripken was the starter, and that was fun on its own." Earnhardt also couldn't help but get swept up in the emotion of the day.

"It was great to have Lee Greenwood and Tanya Tucker singing those songs before the race," Earnhardt said. "I grabbed the American flag and made a victory lap to show the fans we're all just people." Ever since that unforgettable September day in 2001, there hasn't been a race at Dover that has drawn as much emotion, attention or fans. 23, 2001. That was the afternoon when fans entered the gates of Dover's race track knowing little about the array of emotions that awaited them. It was the first gathering of the NASCAR community following the terrorist attacks of 911. NASCAR returned to the spotlight with the MBNA Cal Ripken Jr. 400, a race that honored the career of the Orioles shortstop and regional hero.

It was baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet with the addition of thousands of misty eyes. It all combined to form one huge fitting tribute to the victims of the attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanks-ville, and helped the nation as it began its long healing process. Fans were handed small American flags when they entered the gates. During the prerace ceremonies, Lee Greenwood sang "God Bless the USA," and Tanya Tucker performed "God Bless America" and the national anthem. Several race cars featured patriotic red, white and blue paint schemes.

It prompted the spectators to burst into chants while wildly waving their flags. It was quite fitting for a race track that sits just a couple of miles from Dover Air Force base and always seems to have a mammoth C-5 cargo plane flying over it. Ripken waved the green flag and then stood Rutgers By RYAN DUNLEAVY New Jersey Press Media PISCATAWAY Scott Vallone stood in the background on the Rutgers football sideline in November 2006 and watched as the home team rolled to a 31-point victory against the school he had cheered for most of his life. The result made a lasting impression on Vallone he still remembers the 38-7 final score but that was not the deciding factor in his selection of Rutgers over Syracuse during his recruitment. Similarly, the senior defensive lineman does not expect the outcome of Saturday's noon visit to Syracuse to sway too many opinions, even though he understands that high school players across New York and New Jersey likely are facing a difficult choice.

"I'm not sure kids are going to say, 'I want to pick Rutgers because they beat Syracuse on said Vallone, a Long Island native and former Syracuse fan. "But if both teams are winning, they are probably on the same level as far as tradition and appeal." Syracuse's emphasis on recruiting New Jersey has returned under third-year coach Doug Mar-rone, who has built off the progress made late in the tenure of his predecessor (Greg Robinson). The Orange, who made players unavailable to the media this week, boast 10 New Jersey players. "One thing I will say is when they come up here, they're very successful not just on the football field but in the classroom," Marrone said of Syracuse. "We're proud of that.

The kids' here represent that state extremely well, and they have a lot of pride in themselves." The biggest prize in Adam Cayle 2, Travis Ward 2, Pete Zarielk) 2, Hunter Lang. Running back Ray Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had planned to attend Syracuse but switched to Rutgers after the firing of coach Paul Pasqualoni and the hiring of Robinson.

Rice went on to become Rutgers' all-time leading rusher in just three seasons. Robinson inked only one New Jersey native in his first two seasons before adding six and three, respectively, in his next two. "Inside the program, we've always had a fair share of kids from New Jersey," said Marrone, who played for Syracuse in the 1980s. "The tristate area is so important for us. It's really how we survive in recruiting.

There are a lot of good schools that have recruited (New Jersey). Rutgers has done the best job." Redshirt sophomore defensive end Michael Lar-row, who has started the first three games for Rutgers, received his first scholarship offer from Syracuse. "The biggest thing that stuck out to me was the coaching staff," the Union High School product said. "At the time, Robinson was the coach, and I didn't have a strong faith that he was going to keep his job." Larrow said Marrone's staff continued to recruit him, but Syracuse's cold weather and Rutgers' proximity to home played big' roles. The latter factor reminded him of a story told by his roommate, redshirt sophomore fullback and Queens, N.Y., native Robert Joseph.

"He used to make a joke that when he got recruited by Syracuse, they said, 'Why don't you stay close to Larrow said. "And he'd say, 'Rutgers is two hours away from me. Syracuse is six. Close to home is Rutgers, even though it's crossing state "I don't think it's that important, to be honest with you," Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said of the game's off-field impact. "I think recruiting is recruiting." It is not quite as cut-and-dried for players like Vallone, who will have former high school teammates and rivals as well as residents of his hometown on the opposing sideline.

"Obviously, there is going to be some competitive recruiting just because of the places and where these teams like to recruit," he said. "It was more what I found here than what I didn't like about Syracuse." i.
