Saturday it was feared she could not long stand the terrible strain upon her nervous system, and now tuat ner illness has become complicated anxiety as to her physical ability to withstand the shock is greatly increased. It seems from what she herself says that the face of Walter Galoway, with the awful expression upon it just as the flash of the murderer's gun lit it up in the darkness, is now before her.

It Has Been Allowed to Run Un checked Long Enough And the Elect lie Power Company Propone to Utilize Some of 1U Wailful Energy by Turnlntc It to Good Account. Johnson City is to have an innova tion in the matter of securing power to operate all kinds of machinery, and the amount of money to be expended will reach away up into the thousands. For some lime the stockholders of the Watauga Lighting and Power Co.

have not been receiving a satisfactory dividend on their investment. The plant here is a very costly one and has not been operated to an advantage lately. At a meeting of the stockholders held at the Gilsey House in New York City ast week, the question of damming the Watauga river and thus utilizing the vast power that has bo long been of no service was presented to the board and fully discussed. A decision was reached favorable to the completion of the project. As a result a massive power house and 16-foot dam will be built it King's shoals, on the Three C's railroad all the land and necessary concessions having already been secured.

E. Brading. local manager of the company in this city, tells us that there is no question about the change being made, and that an expert dam builder from Maine is daily expected in the city. mediately upon his arrival he will lock over the grounds, make the necessary estimates, and work will begin at once. The plant here will not be torn down but the engines and such machinery as will not be needed will be disposed of and the building used for manufacturing purposes.

The manifold advantages resulting from this change will be of the very greatest consideration to those who operate machinery, as it will not only greatly reduce the cost of insurance where steam is now used but will do away with the need of fuel and an extra supply of water. The capacity of the plant when com pleted wjlj bp 5Q QV 800 horse power at low water, which is considered amply sufficient for all purirases. Notwithstanding the plant here since its erection has cost the owners something like 18200,000, these gentlemen still have confidence in the future of Johnson City and are willing to invest more of their big dollars in its enterprises. We sincerely hope the under taking will prore no less profitable to the promoters than it will be ad van tageous to our city and her people. Entertained Their Friends.

One of the most unique and enter' taining functions of the present sea son in JohnBon City, was the "At Home" of the Misses Wood, given last Friday evening at their residence on Spring street, in honor of Misses Lynn, of Bristol; Baphman of Sweetwater; Bay of Asheville, and Misses Beeves and Patton of Jonesboro. There was a large attendance of the Johnson City young people, and in addition to these there were present: Messrs, Davis and Davies, of Knoxville; J. T. Taylor and L. xue entertainment provided was, in addition to music and recitations, a "blue stocking party," which was a guessing contest at the illustrated ti ties of books and proved yery interest- mg. i tie af priye were won oy miss Bay, and Geo. Woflbrd, and the booby prizes by Miss Barlow and Mr. JaB. St.

Two of our popular yuug ladies- Misses Lydia Boucher and Iva Johnsontiring of the monotony of indoor lie concluded to seek health and com fort in a drive over the city. They secured a "North Carlinv" horse and a buggy and started out, but their pleas ure was short-lived. They were driv ing up Spring street, and when near Walnut the horse became frightened at some umbrellas and dashed off at a rapid gait.

Miss Johnson was thrown out and the wheels of the buggy passed from her shoulder diagonally across her chest, inflicting somewhat painful but not serious bruises. The eronnd where she fall was muddy and very soft, which doubtless rendered the iniurv ess painful than it would otherwise have been. Miss Boucher succeeded in retaining her seat in the buggy until the horse was stopped and beyond being badly frightened was not injured. Miss Johnson has fully recoyered and is none the worse for her narrow escape. Worth Seeing.
