MONICA LEWIS Provocative high notes Career Carved By Versatility Monica Lewis may be seen in Tucson this weekend in "The D.I.," showing at the Cactus Drive-In Theater. by JANE DONALD Vivacious Monica Lewis has been a popular nightclub and recording star for several years, but only in recent months lias she made a serious try at dramatic acting. This past year, however.

Monica has demonstrated her versatility as a performer in a variety of television appearances on such shows as Heinz Playhouse, The Danny Thomas Show, and Those Whiting Girls. When Jack Webb started looking for a provocative girl singer to play a key role in "The D.I.," his new film for Warner he thought of Monica and signed her after a brief interview. The role can be the springboard for an important motion picture career for the pretty singer. Monica has been singing since her early teens. Born in Chicago, she has been surrounded by music since infancy.

Her father. Leon, was a concert pianist and former musical director of CBS. Her mother. Jessica, sang leading the Chicago Opera Co. and" is today a successful vocal coach.

When Monica was 10 years old, her family moved to New where she studied voice with her mother daily. Her parents were unhappy when she announced at the age of 15 that she intended to become a professional singer, but they soon became reconciled i daughter's blooming career. Mor.ica made her first singing audition on radio station WMCA in New York and was given her own 15-minutc show. Her career took a big leap when Martin Block chose her to co-star with Johnny Johnston on the network's Chesterfield Supper Club for 39 weeks. In Monica came to Hollywood to try for a screen career.

On the second night of her ap- rwiarance as vornjist at the Mocambo. she was spotted by producer Joe Pasternak, who gave her a screen test. A contract resulted and she made her first i appearance in "Inside Straight," followed by the Red Skelton starrer, "Excuse My Dust." She a appeared in an important featured role with Marge and Gower Champion in "Everything I Have Is Yours." She then joined Danny Kaye for a long tour of Army Camps and hospitals in a a and Korea. From this i she became a favorite with the U. S.

armed forces and on her return to the states, began recording a weekly show for Armed Forces Radio Service, which reaches an audience of M.OOO.OOO around the world. Monica still gets as many as 3.000 letters monthly from servicemen, with whom she is a pin-up favorite. Monica has been a i for one year to MCA agent Jennings Lang, who has greatly encouraged her in her acting career. Assured of success as a singer, she now faces an even more i i a as a a a i actress.
