He doubts, however, that he'll be able to land an- mother high-profile Philadelphia like Eskin. JJ'Most of the good oniir television Teporters are under contract with 'non-compete clauses," be says, refer-, ring to the standard contract stipulation that requires a television personality to wait six months before moving to a competing station. That doesn't mean you might not other familiar faces: Among those who have applied to Channel are a few current ana former Philadelphia reporters and anchors.

I the last thing LaMay wants are from local stations. think we would be better off Jjwith somebody who is not known," LaMay says. "I think Howard has taken off some of the pressure in that regard. Otherwise, I would be feeling great pressure to hire a local news Am 4 The Philadelphia mqurer SARAH LEtN anchor, even though it might not be the right person." As for the anchor, unquestionably his single most important hire, LaMay says he is not even close to a decision. He says he does not know if.

Howard Eskin will get more than $1 million over five years CHRISTMAS Gift Certificates iru4.ii Mnucii i innf (215) 947-6000 The last hire will probably be the weathercaster, he says, because he knows he has a strong field of candidates from which to choose and because he hopes to use that person to balance the look of his on-air crew. During the month before the show's debut, Channel 29 will report and produce a complete news show each weeknlght to be critiqued at the station. Reporters will have time to learn the city and to develop sources. And if they have big egos, they'll have a little time to shrink them. "We won't have a big enough staff for celebrities and prima donnas," says LaMay.

"My attitude and I tell everybody I interview is that there are enough talented, well-rounded people out there that we the anchor will be male or female, a minority or a non-minority. It would be nice if her or she were local, but I even that's not an absolute requirement. "I'd L'ke to hire somebody local, at t'lis point, if I had to bet, I'd say i- won't be. There is a very lim-l lted pool of people here who are available, and, in most cases, they are people the other stations don't want." LaMay dismisses talk that he'll have a hard time finding a top-notch news anchor who will come in for less than Eskin is making. "What we pay will depend on what the person Is worth," he says.

"Howard has tre-i mendous local identity. That's worth its weight in gold." TONY AWARD WINNtm Byttf creators of CATS! Includes lavisn Dinner from S16.95.
