at Al Saints Hospital, Stonton and Evergreen Aves. BRINKMAN 10 million have left U.S. since 1900, study reports Aisoc iff fteu WASHINGTON About 10 million people since 1900 have left the United States to live elsewhere, a new study has disclosed. The emigrants have been largely ignored amid the attention given to immigration over the years, says the study, titled "The Elusive Exodus: Emigration from the United States." Since the turn of the century the ratio of immigration to emigration has been 3-1, the report found, with 30 million legal immigrants since 1900 and 10 million emigrants. The number of emigrants, generally uncounted through U.S.

history, was calculated by Robert Warren of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and Ellen Percy Kraly of Colgate University, using information compiled from a variety of sources. Their work was published yesterday by the Population Reference Bureau, a private, nonprofit Washington research group. The authors noted that their calculations were estimates, and they called for collection of additional statistics to learn more about the number departing and their destinations. Such statistics have not been compiled by the government since 1957, they noted. The flow out of the United States gained momentum during the 1960s and is continuing, with an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 VS.

residents leav-ing annually although the majority of those departing have not been U.S. citizens. During the first half of the 1960s, the authors estimated, the average annual emigration was about 66,000. That rose to more than 150,000 per year between 1965 and 1969 and was calculated at more than 280,000 in the early 1970s. From 1960 to 1976, Mexico was the leading destination, receiving 64,600 emigrants per year, according to the study.

Second was West Germany, averaging 24.800 annually; followed by Canada. 21.900; Britain, 20,900, and Japan, 17,200.
