He was also the author of A Short History of Painting in America in 1963 and American Art, an Exhibition of the Collection of Mr. and Mrs.

John D. Rockefeller 3d, published in 1976, Mr. Richardson served as art adviser to Rockefeller for more than a decade, helping the philanthropist to form his American collection. Rockefeller decided to bequeath it to the M. H.

deYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, jointly known as the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Despite the demands of his work, he found time to serve on the boards of Winterthur Museum, of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Smithsonian Arts Commission and the National Portrait Gallery. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Philosophical Society, the Century Association, and the Franklin Inn Club of Philadelphia. In addition, he was a Benjamin Franklin Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His awards and decorations include Chevalier of the Legion of Honor of France and Chevalier of the Order of Leopold of Belgium.

He received the Smithson Medal of the Smithsonian Institution, the distinguished service medal of the American Association of Museums, and the medal of the National Portrait Gal LA By Burr Van Atta Inquirer Sic Writer Edgar Preston Richardson, 82, one of America's most distinguished art experts, died Wednesday at Cathedral Village, a retirement community in Roxborough. He lived in Society Hill. Trained as an artist, he chose to work as an art historian, museum director and author. In those capacities, he had an influence that was felt throughout the art world. Former president of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he also served as director of the Henry F.

du Pont Winterthur Museum in Odessa, Del, and, earlier, the Detroit Institute of Arts. Born in Glens Falls, N.Y., he graduated with highest honors from Williams College in 1925 and came to Philadelphia to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1925 to 1928. When he left, his instructors were sure he would leave his mark on the world. They were right. He became educational secretary of the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1930.

In the fall of 1931, he married Constance Coleman, a landscape painter in the tradition of pre-Impressionist English and American masters. The Richard-sons had met while both were students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The two formed a partnership. Wbile she painted, he studied and wfote, often working his way through administrative problems. She used him as a model he is a Navajo in one painting, a Basque shepherd in another and, in all.

a figure who belonged where he was painted, she said yesterday and as a source of ideas. She repaid him in kind. Richardson, who was called Ted by family and friends, was of great help, she said: "Since Ted was trained as a painter as well as an art historian, I had four eyes, instead of two, working for me." They settled in Detroit and he was named assistant director of the Institute, serving in that capacity from 1933 to 1945 and as director from 1945 to 1962. When he left, he left to become director of Winterthur, a prestige post in the field. After four years at Winterthur, the Richardsons moved to Philadelphia.

Edgar Preston Richardson In a 1968 photograph the Fine Arts in 1966. He left the board to serve as academy president in 1968 and 1969 and returned to the board in 1970. He remained active on the academy's board until he resigned in 1977. He served in other capacities as well. In 1967, he was active on the academy's committee on collections and exhibitions.

In 1973, he accepted appointment to the academy's executive committee. In every post, his interest in American artists and their development was apparent. Frank H. Goodyear, current president of the academy, described him as a gifted writer and an eminent art historian, one not bound by the past. "Ted Richardson is a pioneer in the history of American art," Goodyear said yesterday.

"His scholarship in the decades of the 1940s and 1950s came at a time when few recognized or cared for the brilliant creations of America's native school of painting. "Ted's involvement in American art as scholar, lecturer, director, advisor, founder helped make possible the tremendous growth of interest in things American." His work on the lecture platform, as well as his books, helped stimulate a solid public interest. He was the author of The Way of Western Art: American Romantic Painting in 1939; Washington Allston: A Study of the Romantic Artist in dents with water, as well as provide water for Philadelphia Electric nuclear power plant at Limerick. Mrs. Rhoads was one of those who defied court orders in protests at the pump site.

She was arrested. It was, she noted, the first time she had been arrested. But, she suggested, it might not be the last. "It was in a good cause," she said. The widow of Thomas H.

Rhoads, she was a native of Coopersburg and earned her teaching certificate at West Chester State College. She taught at the Stevens School in Fountain Hill near Bethlehem, at schools in Hempstead, N.Y., and Denville, N.J., and at the Stevens School in Chestnut Hill before joining the Centennial School District's faculty in Warminster in 1954. She taught classes at William Ten-nant High School there for 18 years. For 13 of those years, she coordinate ed the school district's social studies program. Those were turbulent times.

The school population was skyrocketing, classrooms were being added, and teachers were being hired at a rate never seen in the district. The school board and administration were joined in an effort to hold down costs, and the teachers, spurred by rising inflation, were seeking salary increases. There were strikes and threats of strikes. Through the period, Mrs. Rhoads did her best, she said in later years, to "keep both sides on their toes," speaking critically of what she regarded as educational failures and missed opportunities.

She continued to do so after she retired. But it was her drive for Craven Hall's preservation that brought her to the widest attention. For a time, force the family to get chemotherapy for the girl. Treatment began in September 1983, but by then a tumor in her left leg had grown to the size of a football and she was a frail 86 pounds. Doctors said then that the delay in treatment had reduced her chances of surviving from 75 percent to no better than 25 percent, and that without treatment she would have died within three months.

"God will heal me when He wants to heal me," she said after her first round of chemotherapy drugs. The treatment ended last September, and doctors diagnosed her as being free of the Ewing's sarcoma that had caused the tumor. However, in January doctors found malignant tumors in her lungs and back. They said there was no cure for the tumors, which were entirely different from the one on her leg. By Burr Van Atta inquirer Staff Writer Ella Kern Rhoads, 79, a teacher who led a successful battle to preserve a Bucks County landmark, died Wednesday at the Zohlman Nursing Home in Richlandtown.

She lived in Warminster. A retired social studies teacher, Mrs. Rhoads was by nature an advocate and an activist. When something was wrong, her personal code called for her to try to fix it. She led her unit of the teachers' union, took an active part in political campaigns, was a civic leader and frequently appeared at public events and spoke her mind.

One of her causes was Craven Hall, a colonial home at Street and Newtown Roads in Warminster. She formed a citizens' group and led it in a 10-year campaign that assured that the 200-year-old hall would not fall under the wrecker's ball. Mrs. Rhoads was also involved in partisan causes. A proud Democrat, she made her last campaign last year albeit an unsuccessful one when she sought election as an uncommitted delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

Her platform was ihe nuclear freeze issue. Asked why she was running, she replied: "Because I'm vigorous and outspoken, as you can tell. I have a lot of spunk and I'm a feisty character. And I have a high name recognition because I taught here for so long. I know so many people, and of course I got arrested at the pump." She was referring to the Point Pleasant pumping station, a key unit in a much-embattled plan to supply Bucks and Montgomery County resi lery.

Mr. Richardson was awarded hon orary degrees from Williams College, Union College, Wayne University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Delaware and the University of Laval, Quebec. He also found time to serve on the editorial boards of the Magazine of Art, Art in America, and the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, and he was editorial consultant to The American Art Journal. With Lawrence Freischman, he founded the Archives of American Art, which now is housed in the Smithsonian. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Hope Roberts.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at St. Peter's Church, Third and Pine Streets. she waged what was virtually a one-woman campaign, an effort to preserve the centerpiece of what had been one of Bucks County's older towns, the crossroads community of Johnsville. The town had grown up around the store run by John Craven and the house across the way.

The Cravens built the basic house, probably in the mid-18th century. A well-to-do farmer, Harman Van Sant, added to it in the early 19th century. The result, according to architectural historian John M. Dickey, was a farmhouse with surprisingly sophisticated Classical Revival detail, a rarity in the countryside. Eventually, she found supporters and financing, helped pull together a permanent organization and won assurance that Craven Hall had more than a chance for survival.

It was then that she decided to become part of a planned retirement community to be established as Brookhaven Estates in the old Ten-nant High School building, now a vacant structure on a 27-acre campus fronted by Craven Hall. So far, Brookhaven has not materialized, but Craven Hall is secure. In 1980, she was awarded the Heritage Conservation Recreation Service Achievement Award by the secretary of the Interior for her work on Craven Hall. Mrs. Rhoads was active on such professional bodies as the National Council for Social Studies and the National Education Association.

She was a past president of the Centennial Education Association. Surviving are her brothers, H. Conrad and Martin L. Kern. A memorial service is to be held at 11 a.m.
