The car is the pair's first drag racing venture together, although both have been top fuel owners separately, Cirino with "Warlock" and Lopiccolo with "Sicilian." Both were front-engine racers, but their new one is a rear-engine.

Both owners are salesmen. The dragster cost about $10,000 and plenty of work. "We both have good jobs, but everything we make goes into the car," said Cirino, whose vivacious wife, Nancy, added, "That's right, we don't even have any furniture in our living room. Philadelphia at New York, day Chicago at Minnesota Cleveland at Houston Only games scheduled Jim Murphy, 30-year old Santa Rosa funny car driver, set an all-time elapsed time record of 6.33 for the plastic- bodied dragsters. Murphy's "Holy Smokes" Barracuda, powered by a Keith Black-prepared Chrysler engine, also had the fastest top speed among the funny cars of 231.95 m.p.h. The "Holy Smokes" car is the one Ed McCulloch won the national championship with in 1971. Danny Ongais, driving the Rossi-Lisa fuel dragster in which Billy Tidwell set the official NHRA record of 239.64 m.p.h. earlier this year, was clocked at 243.24.

The rear -engine dragster, with an unusual wedge shape design, is powered by a 426-cubic inch Chrysler. Ongais' speed will not count as an NHRA reeord, however, as speeds and times made in the Super-nationals are not considered "official." fastest top fuel speed ever recorded is 243.69 by Don Garlits in winning the NHRA Gator-nationals last February, r. Neither Southern nor the car owners were available for comment after Hart's decision. They had already loaded up the psychedelic blue and brown machine and headed back to Cirino's West Covina garage to prepare for today's runs. Cirino maintains the chassis, which was built by Don Tuttle, and Lopiccolo is the engine man.

historic run Saturday in Superna-tionals qualifying. Southern, a tree trimmer during the week, put his 392-cubic-inch, Chrysler-' powered t6p fuel dragster through the quartermile in 6.03 seconds fastest in drag history. The elapsed time was so quick, in fact, that Super-nationals meet director Jack Hart refused to believe it and ruled that Southern must do it again to make it count. Back-up Run Today "The elapsed time was inconsistent with other times and conditions to cause National Hot Rod Assn. officials to explore for any possible error or malfunction in the electronic timing device," said Hart.

Southern will be forced to make a back-up run this i g. If he comes within 2 of the 6.03 time (6.15 or better) he will be credited with 6.03. If he fails the record speed will be disallowed. Southern was not the only driver to go fast Saturday as top fuel, funny, car, pro stock and fuel motorcycles made qualifying runs for today's eliminations in the $201,000 Su-pernationals. rengums ivoii, o-i PITTSBURGH (UPI), The Pittsburgh Penguins scored 3 goals on their first 3 shots and then coasted to an easy 6-1 victory over Atlanta Saturday night.
