14-C Thursday, Sept 5, 1985 The Philadelphia Inquirer Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices OBITUARIES Alexis I. du Pont Bayard, lawyer and political leader post he held for two years. By Burr Van Ana Inquirer Staff Writer Alexis I. du Pont Bayard, 67, former lieutenant governor of Delaware and a member of the finance committee of the Democratic National Commit-tee, died Tuesday during heart-by-f pass surgery at Graduate Hospital. A lawyer who was known as "Lex," he maintained a law office in Wil- mington and homes in Wilmington and in Rehoboth Beach.

He was a partner in Bayard, Bill Handelman, a law firm that lists ma-; jor corporations and national organi- zations among its clients. Reorga- nized last year, the firm is now Bayard, Handelman Murdoch. A graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, he was admit-. 4 ted to the bar in 1948 and entered I into politics. His politics raised eyebrows.

On his mother's side, he was a du Pont, a family that was traditionally Repub- lican, but he proved to be a liberal Democrat, a self-described Adlai Ste-f venson man. He was elected lieutenant gover-I nor in his first race, serving with Gov. Elbert N. Carvel, also a Demo-) crat, from 1949 to 19S3. At age 30, he became.

the youngest person elected to the state's second-highest office. After a single term, he turned his attention to national politics. Five generations of Bayards had represented Delaware in the VS. Senate, and his decision in 19S2 to run against Sen. John J.

Williams came as no surprise. Political leaders of the day said that his timing was wrong. He ran as a Stevenson liberal against a man he W. Beaumont Whitney? W. Beaumont Whitney 2d, 88, a retired Philadelphia insurance bro-; ker, died Tuesday at his home in Dunwoody Village, Newtown Square.

He was a former resident of Chestnut I Hill. Senior partner in the firm of Lu-' kens, Savage Washburn, he became vice president of Alexander Alex- ander Inc. when the New York-based international insurance brokerage merged with his firm in 1967. A member of a prominent family, Mr. Whitney was raised in German-town, and educated at the Kent I Jean Loveday, active in horse racing BCXXER Seat J.
