Where bacon and hams, raihsr thtn pork are required, the large breeds will be tha moat In the neighborhood of oar Atlantic cities, where fresh pork is in demand, small breeds will doubtless be the bast at email, delicate, fine flavored poik eommands high prices. la improrinr our present heterogent-OUT acclimated breeds of pigs, all that is necessary Is judicious selection of sows to cross with some old established valuable breed having' the particular qualities desired, strongly developed. If it is de-aired to reduce the size of a common breed, and it-the same time to increase its early maturity and disposition to lay on fat, with a small proportion of offal and bone, there is no better breed in our Opinion, than the Chinese.

The valuable characteris ics of this celebrsted breed early maturity, rapidity of fattening. delicacy or flesh, fineness ot bone, heavy Jtams, broad shoulders, and deep, well rounded sides have been long and permanently fixed so that they are the more surely impressed on the progeny than would be the case were the breed of a more recent origin. The improved Eng lish small breeds have nil more or less of blood in Ihem, and owe their best 'points to this and other judicious crosses. Pure blooded Chinese hogs would probably be too lender and delicate in constitution to stand the rigor of our noithern but their crosses with our accli-' mated breeds are hardy and it is better fur us to make a good bretd in this way. to import from England a breed which has been produced there, and which, however good they may be for that climate, do not, as we are informed, give very gocd satisfaction here.

This is the case with the Berkshire. A better breed, where neither a very large or small hog is required, does not exist in Great Britain. Here, however, it is by no means a general favoiite, The same rules will apply to the improvemen' of our large breeds. Gold vs. Hay.

The Ohio Farmer, in commenting upon the letter of a California correspondent) makes some very sensible remarks about the mania which has possessed the people of this country to forsake the golden fluids pt their own State to dig in the "gold fields" of California, Where they often "gather more disappointment than produce. The Farmer says "It ever been our opinion that the ultimate prosperity of California, or any other State, must be influenced more by its adaptation to agricultural pursuits than by any or all the gold mines that have or may be found therein. There can de no sort of doubt but that the grea est source of wealth which California possesses is found in the rich valleys, tablelands and moun lain slopes so graphically decribed by Fremont, and now so ably noticed by 'Mr. Kelley. When these resources are "developed, aMhey will be soon, ihe eold diggings and quartz rock will sink with comparative insignificance.

Look at it If is said that the yield of gold from the California mines for the current year will reach the enormous sum of fifty -five or sixty million of dollars I An enormous sum truly and yet we venture to say that the value of the hay crop nlone of New York will folly equal it Six counties of that State produced in 1850, 800,000 tons of hay, which, at $7 per ton, would be $5,600,000, This they jo year after year, with a gradual increase and yet how few are tftt rushing to the of Uneida, jenerson, lieniin- go, Delaware, Chaulauque or St. Li w-, rence The wheat and corn fields of Ohio "produce annually more dollars than the gold mines of California. Yet, theie is no noise made about it and instead of rushing to them in the hope ol growing suddenly rich, thousands have "been' fleeing from ihem, in search of gold gold We hazard nothing in saying that had 1 the emigrants to California, since the dis-: coveryof gold there, gone, instead, to the rich lands of our' Western States, they -ould ha8 produced double the amount of all the gold dug from ihe mines of that i Ei Dorado. The capital necessary to place a mart in working condition in the California mines would have settled him comfortably on on eighty-acre lot in lews, i hv good cabin, with a team, farming utensils, provisions, and insured "Mm, "instead of a chance for a little gild, the certainty of an independent position fof sithout the sacrifice of home, friend, health, morale, and indeed all ihat -men should esteem valuable in life, Thank heaven, the gold mania" is in 1t decadence, and the time is near when will be. seen and known that every ponce of gold dust dug from the California mines ess cost twice us tnarset value" fo Piepb FoWL Han the Tor.
