Wilfred (Billy) Williams, a popular singer whose quartet was a regular on the Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca spectacular "Your Show of Shows," died July 16 in New York City. He was 74 and had been hospitalized after a heart attack. Williams had been with a group called the Charioteers for many years but left them to form his own quartet. The Billy Williams Quartet appeared on the TV variety show from 1950 until the Saturday night variety program went off the air in 1954. In recent years Williams had been involved in a program to help homeless New York City men.

She was 57.

Big Mama, whose real name was Willie Mae Thornton, composed Janis Joplin's hit, "Ball and Chain," and became famous in 1952 when she recorded "Hound Dog," the tune that later helped propel Elvis Presley to the top. She died Wednesday evening at the Hollywood home she shared with her sister, Mattie Fields, who said the singer collapsed while sitting on a couch. She had been in poor health much of her life but had recently returned from a tour in Montreal, Quebec, Vancouver, B.C., Eugene, and Oakland. Born in Alabama Thornton was born Dec. 11, 1926, in Montgomery, one of nine children.

An older brother taught her to play drums and harmonica. During the 1940s she toured the South as a singer, dancer and comedienne with a vaudeville troupe, Sammy Green's Hot Harlem Revue. Long-time band leader Johnny Otis, who is a minister and will preside at the singer's funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Conner Johnson Mortuary at 46th Street and Avalon Boulevard, said of the singer who once weighed 300 pounds, "She was marvelous. She had something the more contemporary blues singers don't have: a big presence, both physically and spiritually." MANG, Russell R.

He had planned to present her with Etta James and other former Otis band singers at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September. "She was earthy and unsophisticated," Otis said. "A very generous and big-hearted person.
