7B FLORIDA TODAY, Friday, March 20, 1987 Cricket player selling pitch to Phillies 3 CRICKET, From 8B Experimental laser treatment uplifting FROM THE STATE PAGE "Now that's one I've never seen," says Ed Taggert of New Jersey. "Sounds interesting," agrees Ed Bartels, nodding under his red Phillies cap. With curly blond hair, a deep tan and freckles across his nose, Pont looks more like a California lifeguard than a proper Brit. Pastore jokes that his own wife and daughters have been coming to camp to ogle the 6-foot-3, 213-pound cricket player. "I'll tell you, if I was that good-looking, I'd forget about baseball and become a movie star," Pastore says, laughing.

Other players in camp seem to be taking the British invasion in stride. "His accent when he speaks, heads do turn," says Joe Graves, a 26-year-old short-relief pitcher trying to make the Phillies cut. Before shoulder surgery benched him, Graves pitched in the minors for the Mets and the Expos. Of Pont, he says, "I think he's pretty good. If you didn't know he was a cricket player, you wouldn't know it by the way he was pitching." There have been adjustments: cricketers catch bare-handed, so Pont isn't used to a glove.

Bunts were a mystery. Baseball conditioning is about three times as rigorous, he says. Cricketers aren't big on running. And then there's the culture shock: No break for afternoon tea. "You have iced tea here.

I mean that's absolutely disgusting." like the look of that. Let's give it a "Pont said. the Phillies, Pont had four other unsuccessful tryouts with major league clubs. He started last fall, paying his own way over and wangling a tryout with the Yankees. It was the first time he'd pitched baseball.

The club gave him 90 minutes, then said thanks, but no thanks. Then he headed for South Africa, where they play baseball in addition to cricket, and pitched five games there. This spring, he came back to the USA with renewed hope and a sponsor, Fishermen's Friend throat lozenges. "He started making the rounds of spring training camps: the Dodgers, the Rangers, the Indians and the Blue Jays. said, "Sorry, old chap," until he got to the Phillies.

The Phils don't believe in 20-rhinute tryouts, says Jack Pastore, director of scouting. The club agreed to house and feed Pont with its minor league players while he works on his baseball. Said Phillies pitching coach Bob Tiefenauer: "In throwing the baseball like a fastball you couldn't tell the difference between him and the other boys here who've been playing all their lives. He's got the fundamentals. But it takes more than a good strong arm.

You've got to be able to put the 'English' on the ball." Who better than an Englishman for that task? The Phillies will tell Pont by Monday whether he makes the team. That way, he can return to England and cricket if his great baseball experiment fails. He has offers from two top British teams, the equivalent of major league clubs here. But over there, top cricketers make about $50,000 a year. Pont cheerfully admits the bigger bucks in baseball are part of his motivation.

"Not to sound my own trumpet, but I was ranked as the No. 1 thrower in the United Kingdom. I thought with that powerful arm, there must be a way of earning a decent amount of money and getting into a career that involved throwing. Baseball seemed to fit the bill, really," he said. Pont says his fastball has been clocked at between 86 and 90 mph.

In 1985, he broke the world record by tossing a cricket ball 440 feet. Some fans at spring training haven't noticed Pont. Two men who described themselves as life-long Phillies followers were intrigued by the idea of a cricket player on the mound. his unsuccessful bid for mayor. Powers was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune from 1977 to 1981.

Imprisoned designer to be relocated Aldo Gucci, patriarch of the international fashion firm that bears his name, will probably move from federal prison to a halfway house in West Palm Beach next month, officials said. Gucci, 81, is serving a one-year sentence for income tax evasion at the Federal Correctional Institution at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle. He is scheduled to be moved to a halfway house April 13 after serving six months of his sentence, said Mike Pugh, assistant superintendent at the prison. Although federal authorities have not officially decided on a halfway house, said Pugh, "there is a Salvation Army CTC (community treatment center) in West Palm Beach, and in all likelihood that's where he'll be going." Gucci owns a home and more than 414 acres in nearby Palm Beach. County can't bear couple's wildcats Siberian tigers and jaguars do not compare with a domestic cows or horses, so the Clay County Zoning Board has voted to order Vernon and Vlcki Roberts to move the wild animals from their Clay Hill ranch.

At a hearing this week, the board upheld an earlier decision by County Administrator John Bowles and voted unanimously to order the wildcats off the Florida Reptile Ranch, near Middleburg. The ranch began boarding Siberian tigers, lions, jaguars, cougars, leopards and bearcats last December. The couple can appeal the board's ruling to a Circuit judge. Compiled by Lee Freeman A laser beam that clears clogged arteries is being tested at the University of Florida's Shands Hospital in Gainesville, and the first results have been promising. Adele Conturba, 72, of Keystone Heights, had circulation restored in her legs with the help of a 10-second laser burst after history of heart problems that included two coronary bypass operations.

She has recuperated like "some kind of tiger," said her husband, Charlie. Unable to walk without severe pain before the therapy, Conturba said she walked the hospital corridors a day after the "lasering" last October with no sensation of pain. Vascular surgeon James Seeger says Conturba is among the high-risk patients who most benefit from the experimental procedure called "laser angioplasty." She is one of 17 patients at Shands and the Gainesville Veterans Administration Medical Center who've undergone laser angioplasty for severe leg-artery occlusion during the past 18 months. Although the therapy is not viewed as a cure-all for severely obstructed arteries, Seeger and UF cardiologist George Abela are finding the laser probe has an important place among treatment options for atherosclerosis, the artery-clogging condition that frequently leads to heart attacks and strokes. English no anguish -for Taiwanese teen Osceola County's spelling-bee champion for the second year in a row is eighth-grader Sally Yang, 13, who couldn't speak or understand English five years ago when she came to this country from Taiwan.

"When we came, she know nothing" about the language, said her mother, Sue Yang. The girl correctly spelled all 33 words in recent written and oral competitions in Kissimmee. ADELE CONTURBA: Walking painlessly again. Sally's family emigrated to Richmond, in 1982 for the improved educational opportunities available there and to be with relatives, said her father, Sen Yang. The Yangs moved to Lakeland in 1983 and to Kissimmee in 1985.

HRS chief dips into Illinois again Secretary Gregory Coler on Thursday asked a second Illinois official in as many days to help assemble his new staff at the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. Michael Powers, a one-time Chicago newsman and aide to Cook County, 111., State Attorney Richard Daly, will be executive staff director at the Florida agency, Coler announced. The job pays $61,900. Powers' duties will focus on keeping the huge agency's Tallahassee headquarters in touch with its operations in South Florida. Coler took control of the HRS earlier this year after leaving a job as director of the Illinois Department of Public Aid.

Powers, 40, has had his. own public relations company in Chicago since 1983. From 1982-83, he handled public relations for the Cook County State Attorney's Office and then was an aide to Daly during Court conditionally OKs lawyer-education plan Associated Press up to date, but said the plan would have to be revised before in can be put into effect on Jan. 1, 1988. They noted the strong debate among members of the bar over the value of the plan proposed by the bar's board of governors.

"We recognize that reasonable people may differ with regard to the benefits this program will provide," Justice Ben Overton wrote for the court. "We feel, however, that there is clearly a reasonable basis for the board's action and it would be inappropriate to reject this program out of hand." The court suggested that any continuing education plan should include a separate category for judges, that federal judges should be exempt and that the plan should be re-examined every three years. TALLAHASSEE The Florida Supreme Court approved in principle Thursday a plan of mandatory continuing education for lawyers and judges in the Sunshine State, but sent a proposal back to the Florida Bar for revisions.
