14 Sunday, Oct. 11, 1981 Philadelphia Inquirer Stanford upsets UCLA for 1st win; 3Las Vegas overcomes BYU, 45-41 IS, West Associated Press Halfback Darrin Nelson dove two yards for a touchdown with two minutes remaining in the game yesterday to give previously winless Stanford a 26-23 upset victory over 17th-ranked UCLA at Stanford, Calif. Nelson's touchdown capped 62-L yard drive that began after defensive lackle John Bergen blocked a UCLA field-goal attempt with 6:26 left in the .1 Pac-10 game. Mark Harmon kicked four field goals for Stanford (1-4, 1-1), which dropped UCLA (3-2) to 1-1 in conference play. After taking a 16-14 halftime lead on 9 47-yard field goal by Harmon, Stanford yielded a UCLA touchdown-rby Frank Bruno and a 41-yard field goal by Norm Johnson, giving the Bruins a 23-19 lead with 8:04 remain--mg.

Following the blocked field goal, Stanford quarterback John Elway hit Ihalfback Vincent White for pass completions of nine and 11 yards to -give Stanford a first down on the UCLA 14. for 163 'yards for the pass-happy Bears. Mississippi St 37, Colo. St. 27 The 19th-ranked Bulldogs, rushed for 490 yards, with sophomore fullback Henry Koontz scoring on a pair of one-yard plunges, and held off their stubborn hosts at Fort Collins, Colo.

Sophomore quarterback Tom The-nell, making his first start for Colorado State (0-5), fired four touchdown passes, including a 30-yarder to Ri-; chie Hall remaining. The score could have tied the game at 28-28, but the Rams failed on ihe extra-point attempt when the snap was high and holder Craig Merten was. tackled short of the goal line while trying to run. Four minutes later, Mississippi State (4-1) put the game away by marching 80 yards in nine plays, entirely on the ground. Sophomore wingback Lamar Windham scored from five yards out.

The Bulldogs tacked on. a safety with four seconds left when Thenell was sacked in the end zone. Washington State 23, Oregon State 0 Quarterback Ricky Turner's 49-yard touchdown dash one minute into the third quarter broke open a scoreless Pac-10 game and gave the host Cougars their fifth win without a loss. Washington State added 17 fourth-quarter points and continued its best start since 1930, when it took a 9-0 record into the Rose Bowl and lost to Alabama, 24-0. Oregon State is 14.

Arizona State 23, Oregon 0 Quarterback Mike Pagel threw two second-half touchdown passes and scored once himself on a one-yard sneak as Arizona State (4-1, 2-1) won a Pac-10 home game over the Beavers (14, 0-2). The first half was a scoreless battle of punts. New Mexico 26, Texas-El Paso 3 Subbing for Roman Gabriel's son, Robin, quarterback David Osborn woke up theew Mexico offense with two second-half scoring passes and Pete Parks booted a pair of 42-yard field goals as the Lobos (24) defeated host UTEP (0-5). Hawaii 14, Wyoming 9 Quarterback Tim Lyons masterminded two scoring drives in the third period as Hawaii's Rainbow Warriors came from behind and won at Laramie, Wyo. BYU's winning streak had been the nation's longest, but the Cougars were playing without injured all-America quarterback Jim McMahon.

The Cougars (5-1) took a 41-24 lead -with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter on Waymon Hamilton's third short touchdown run of the game, but were held scoreless the rest of the way. King took over, hitting Sandusky on a 55-yard pass play to set up a one-yard score by Mel Carver. It stayed 41-31 until seven minutes remaining in the game when King again found Sandusky, who made a diving catch at the BYU two. Ray Crouse scored on the next play to make it 41-38 for BYU. UNLV's defense then forced BYU to punt from its 42 with 3:40 left in the game, and King went to work picking apart the BYU defense.

San Diego State 52, Iowa State 31 1 Senior quarterback Matt Kofler passed for 444 yards and four touchdowns, jincluding three scoring strikes in a 28-point. third quarter, powering unbeaten San Diego State to an upset over 12th-ranked Iowa State at San Diego. Washington 27, California 26 Chuck Nelson kicked a 21-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining to give Washington its comeback victory over host California in a Pac-10 game. The kick, which capped an 80-yard drive, redeemed a fumble-plagued performance for the Huskies (4-1, 2-1), who had to overcome a 21-0 California lead early in the second half. The Golden Bears (14) are 1-1 in the conference.

Huskie tailback Ron Jackson rushed for 155 yards on 27 carries and caught one touchdown pass as Washington bounded back. Jackson's 41-yard run in the'Tourth quarter set up the third Huskie touchdown, a 16-yard charge by re- serve tailback Sterling Hinds with 9:19 left to The Huskie defense stopped Cal for most of the game, halting the Golden Bears three times on the six-inch line in the second quarter following an imerception by California on the Washington 14. California quarterback Jay vTor-chio completed only 10 of 42 passes Lehigh rally beats Connecticut, 21-17 i Asm, 1 Associated Press California's Mariet Ford flips over BROWN-PENN Brawn 4 13 College football summaries Associated Press Larry Michalski fired an 83-yard touchdown pass to split end Dan Ryan with 3 minutes, 40 seconds left the touchdown that gave Lehigh )a 21-17 victory over Connecticut yes-; terday at Bethlehem, Pa. It was the 10th Michalski-to-Ryan scoring pass in five games. Michalski omplejed 26 of 39 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception.

Before connecting with Ryan on the game winner, he had scoring I throws of eight yards to tight end Paul Anastasio and 15 yards to half-back Terry Heffner. Mike Whalen converted after each Lehigh score. Connecticut quarterback Ken I Sweitzer completed 13 of 26 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns: 59 i yards to Ken Miller and 15 yards to Vin DiLeo. He ran the ball 20-times for 30 yards and had a 40-yard aver-' age on five punts. Lehigh (4-1) went into the game ranked first in the Lambert Cup poll and sixth nationally in NCAA Divi-sion I-AA.

Connecticut (2-3) was ninth in Lambert voting. Lafayette 37, Bucknell 0 Sophd-Imore quarterback Frank Novak threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and junior halfback Rodger Shepko ran 18 times for 121 yards as the Leopards (5-0) routed the Bisons Lafayette, with two straight and its best start since 1956, rolled up 456 yards on offense to 141 for Bucknell. Following a 27-yard field goal by Mike Millar, Novak hit fullback Nick Kowgios for a one-yard score, giving the Leopards a 10-0 lead at the half. Novak hit Shepko and fullback Jim Fruehan for long touchdowns in the third quarter. Kowgios ran nine yards to score in the fourth and re-) serve fullback Kurt Keintz ran over -from the one in the closing minutes.

Novak completed 19 of 31 passes without an interception. Navy 30, Air Force 13 Halfback Eddie Myers, returning to the Navy Jineup after missing two games with an injured thigh, ran for 179 yards "and one touchdown to boost the "Midshipmen (3-2) past the Falcons (14) at Annapolis, Md. King, who marched the Rebels 79 yards for the final score, threw another touchdown pass, ran for a third score and set up two other UNLV touchdowns with long passes. In allthe 6-fooM senior completed -31 of 57 passes for 473 yards. East Air Force, cut the lead to six points early in the final quarter, but Navy came back with a field goal and a touchdown to preserve the victory. Yale 29, Holy Cross 28 Tony Jones booted a 32-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining to give the Elis (4-0) the victory at Worcester, Mass.

Holy Cross (3-2) capitalized on a fumble recovery at the Yale 17 to set up an 18-yard field goal by Tony Me-link with 3:21 to play, putting the Crusaders ahead, 28-26. Yale trailed, 17-7 at halftime, but two touchdowns then gave the Elis a 19-17 lead. Linebacker Jay Snyder returned a pass interception 37 yards for the first score and running back Rich Diana sprinted 67 yards for the second. The two teams then' exchanged touchdowns before the two late field goals. Harvard 27, Cornell 10 A fumble recovery and a pass interception sparked a 14-point scoring spree within 1:26 of the third quarter that enabled the Crimson (2-2) to break open the game at Ithaca, N.Y.

The'first of the two quick Harvard touchdowns came on a one-yard run by Jim Callinan. Then, after Scott Murrer's interception of a Cornell pass, Harvard quarterback Ron Cuc-cia hit Steve Bianucci with a 27-yard pass give the Crimson a 20-3 lead. Cornell dropped to 04. William Mary 12, Dartmouth 7 A 54-yard sweep in the fourth quarter by freshman tailback Jeff Powell gave William 8t Mary (1-4) the win over the big Green (1-3) at Hanover N.H. William Mary had scored first with a pair of Laszlo Mike-Mayer field goals in the first and second quarters.

Dartmouth came back with less than 3 minutes to go in the half as junior fullback Rich Lena capped off a 12-play, 82-yard drive with a 3-yard plunge. Davidson 44, Boston University 14 Davidson quarterback Brian Whit-mire passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Wildcats (2-3) ripped the heavily favored Terriers (2-3) at Davidson, N.C. South game rushing yardage total in Tar Heels' history. His touchdowns came on runs of 30 and 2 yards. The' North Carolina record is 286 yards, set by Amos Lawrence against Virginia in 1977.

North Carolina remained undefeated in five games while winning its ACC opener. Wake Forest falls to 24 overall and 0-2 in the Clemson 27, Virginia 0 Clemson tailback Cliff Austin ran for two touchdowns as the ninth-ranked Tigers trounced the Cavaliers in an Atlantic Coast Conference game in Clemson, S.C. The triumph, which opened Clemson's ACC schedule, was the Tigers' fifth straight without a loss. Virginia is 0-5 and 0-3. Georgia 37, Mississippi 7 Her-schel Walker ran for 265 yards and the llth-ranked Bulldogs (4-1) ripped open the game with three second-quarter touchdowns to' trounce the Rebels (3-3) in Oxford, Miss.

Walker carried the ball 41 times, scoring on a six-yard run to start the second-quarter spree that propelled the Bulldogs to a 24-7 halftime lead. The second quarter also marked the Rebels' loss of quarterback John Fourcade, their all-time total offense leader, who left the game with a rib separation midway through the period.
