2C FLORIDA TODAY, Monday, February 16, 19S7 3 Lobster Classic run offers clinic Knee injury breaks Connors; Ed berg wins 2nd Indoor title Teacher's net PRO TENNIS T-' rT7 TTi 6 rt-f-MR-rri NTTTTT1 FLORIDA TODAY Wires MEMPHIS, Tenn. Top-seeded Stefan Edberg won his second U.S. Indoor tennis championship in the past three years Sunday when a knee injury forced No. 2-seed Jimmy Connors to retire in the second set. Connors, who had lost the first set 3-6, fell to the hard-court surface at the Racquet Club of Memphis after hitting a weak backhand overhead to Edberg in the third game of the second set While Connors lay on the court holding bis right knee, Edberg easily returned the ball into the open court to break Connors' serve and take a 2-1 lead.

Connors, who has now lost seven straight finals and has not won since 1984, was assisted off the court and attended to during the change over. After being assessed one penalty point for delay, Connors retired from the match, making Edberg, the 1987 Australian Open champion Todd Snyder, a trainer with the Association of Tennis Professionals, said Connors would undergo precautionary X-rays to ensure there was no fracture. Snyder said the injury could keep Connors sidelined for 10 to 21 days. "He sprained one of the main ligaments that keeps the knee from collapsing. There is no need for immediate surgery," Snyder said.

Garrison takes Slims SAN FRANCISCO Zina Garrison, rebounding strongly from a 1986 season she calls a "total nightmare," gained her second tournament triumph of the year Sunday with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory against Sylvia Hanika in the $150,000 Virginia Slims of California finals. The third-seeded Garrison's combination of deft lobs, dropshots, and deep backhands enabled her to overcome Hanika's strong serve and volley game. -r rt vt i i i i II 1 1 1 and the world's No. 2 player, a 6-3, 2-1 winner. "I was on a little bit of a roll this week and I would have liked to have continued," Connors said as he lay on a trainer's table in the locker room.

"I really don't remember what happened," Connors said. "After I hit the shot, I came down and I was leaning back and I tried to go forward and then I can't remember." Connors, who is ranked eighth in the world and had won seven U.S. Indoor titles, said he quickly knew he would be unable to continue the match. "I couldn't put my weight on it, and I couldn't go out there and chase balls on one foot. That's not fair to me or him (Edberg) or the people," Connors said.

LOCAL GOLF New law a sobering prospect for boaters Sm CAPT. RANDY WARD BOATING boat sales and boating schools. A dreadful mishap apparently occured recently in the BOC Around the World singlehanded sailing race. Skipper Jacques de Roux's boat, the Skoiern IV, was found drifting unattended five miles off the southern coast of Austrailia. De Roux had failed to respond to three scheduled radio contacts with another boat in the preceding 12 hours.

ARGOS (a transmitter used on race boats) satellite positions showed the boat drifting in circles. A search plane was launched and the vessel was located off the coast of New South Wales. It was boarded, but no one was found aboard. It was assumed de Roux had fallen overboard. De Roux, who had won Class 2 in the first leg of the race from Newport, R.I., to Cape Town, South Africa, was also leading on this leg, despite having sustained serious damage to his steering systems.

He had been hand steering for 12 days. Obviously, this could have caused extreme fatigue and a mistake could have been made in judgement. The air-sea search for de Roux covered 13-by-35 miles for 48 hours without success. The search was canceled. The first boating case in Florida involving alcohol soon will be tried in Jacksonville.

A 37-year old boater was arrested on charges of manslaughter for operating a boat while under the influence. The man slammed a speedboat into a bridge killing a woman. He was charged under a new statute of influence-manslaughter and manslaughter by culpable negligence. Under this new law, prosecutors only have to prove an offender was impaired by alcohol and they do not have to prove he was drunk. "It has been difficult until recently to prove DUI by said a Florida Marine Patrol official.

"On the highway, some of the signs you can look for are stereo-typically characteristics of drunken drivers crossing lanes, the center lane, driving off the roadway and not dimming lights. "In a boat, there are no lines you can see them crossing. There are no high-beam headlights. Drunkenness is more difficult to detect at a glance," he said. This trial should send a message to drinking boaters everywhere.

In the meantime, the State's Alcohol additives, such as ethanol, methanol and oxinol are replacing lead as an octane booster. These compounds have a detrimental effect on the plastic and rubber materials in the fuel system. These additives cause drying, cracking and swelling. The Outboard Marine Corpe-ration, makers of Evinrude and Johnson, has developed a material it will be using in the fuel systems of its 1987 product line. This alcohol-resistant material will withstand up to 10 percent ethanol or methanol without experiencing substantial deterioration through the life of the engine.

Try to avoid using fuel containing alcohol. The pumps are usually labeled if alcohol is present in the fuel. Owners of older engines should periodically inspect their fuel systems for deterioration or leakage and replace as necessary. The Board of Directors of the Marine Industries of South Florida (MIASF) has established a toll-free number for boaters. It's 1-800-BOAT-001.

Started in 1982, this model program has saved many lives. Boating deaths in that state dropped from 150 in 1982 to 77 in 1984.

This downward trend is expected to continue. Hopefully, Florida's new campaign will have similar results. It used to be that when a boater filled his fuel tank, he had little doubt he was filling it with anything other than pure gasoline. This is no longer true.
