When Tide Turned But at the opening of the third set Vines unleashed a glittering attack at the net, alternating low volleys with unreturnable smashes. Feeling a seemingly apparent victory gradually slipping from his grasp, Doeg softened his shots in an attempt to retard Vines' pace, which was fast gaining momentum. The champion's maneuver did not have the desired effect and Vines kept on playing invincibly, scoring points freely with powerful backhand drives. The turning point of the match came in the tenth game of the fourth set. At this stage Doeg was leading five to four in games and wgn the first two points from Vines' service in the tenth.

Employing his powerful backhand stroke, the Pasadena youngster pulled the match out of the fire by winning the next four points to take the game. Both finalists played sterling tennis in the first two sets. The play was Just as close as the scores indicate. Doeg was playing his best tennis of the year. His "cannon-ball" service and sizzling slice shots were working beautifully on base line play.

Even though Vines' strong backhand play was not working effectively for him, he was getting results with his straight, bullet-like shots to Doeg's base line. Champion Grows Weary Suddenly finding his backhand stroke in the third set, Vines slowly worked up a lead over Doeg, who was growing weary from the terrific pace. Vines was indefatigable, playing at probably as fast a pace and stroking the ball with as startling eccuracy and deadliness as he ever has in his meteoric career. Tiring from Vines' change of pace, Doeg played a defensive game In the last set, but was outmatched by his younger opponent's assortment of shots. Several times Vines cleverly drew Doeg close to the net, the champion's favorite spot after service, and then whipped across passing shot that left Doeg in the mid-tile of the court.

Vines scored heavily on placements, having 49 against 23 for the national champion. The Pacific coast sensation also benefitted by Doeg's ten double faults. Recapitulation: Plaoa- S.rvle Doobl.
