PAGE 20 -THE DAILY NEWS, Huntingdon, Teenage Pregnancy Is Booklet Topic The birth rate for teenage women in this country is among the highest in the world. there are 57 births for every 1,000 females aged 15 to 19. And that's a fact that carries with it a host of heartbreaking problems 4 health dangers to the infant, health and emotional problems for the young mother and that's just the beginning. To help people understand more about it, the Department of Health Education and Welfare has a new publication called "Teenage Pregnancy: Everybody's Problem." It discusses the risk of early child bearing, what can be done to reduce teenage pregnancy, and how community involvement can help. 087P, Pueblo, Colo. 81009. The adverse effects of a teenage pregnancy on a young rhother and her infant make this one of the most pressing health problems in the U. S. today.

For example, the infant born to a mother under 16 is three times more likely to die in the first year of life than a child of a mother aged 20 to 24. And babies born to womert under 15 years of age have three times as many brain and nervous system disorders as children born to mothers over .15. Mothers under 16 are more likely to suffer from toxemia, a condition that may result in high blood pressure, seizures and, sometimes even death. A young mother is also more likely to start labor prematurely and- to have a prolonged and difficult labor, multiplying the hazards to herself and the baby. In addition to health, young mothers face economic and social problems.

Statistically the teenage mother will most likely drop out of school. Eight of ten who become mothers at 17 years of age or younger never complete high school. When teenagers marry as a result of a pregnancy, their problems may only become more complicated. Teenage parents are often isolated from their peers from normal 'social life. Finishing school is difficult and 'a result many drop And, without adequate education and skills.they are qualified only for the lower paying jobs.

These pressures cause, 50 percent of all teenage marriage to end in divorce within five years. 1( "Teenage Everybody's Problem" includes a list of information resources as well' as a discussion of ways to prevent or alleviate the probleifa. The free "Catalog" is published quarterly by the Consumer Information Center of the General Services Administration.

Ostomy Society To Meet Sunday The Central Pennsylvania Ostomy Society will meet Sunday, April 16, at 2:00 p.m. in the Altoona Hospital nurse residence auditorium. All area ostomates as well as nursing personnel and other medical professionals are invited to attend.
