Lily in Love is currently Ritz Five. By Desmond Ryan Inquirer Movie Critic They say of Fitzroy Wynn, a flamboyant actor of the old school, that the camera loves him. But not, they might have added, as much as Fitzroy Wynn loves Fitzroy Wynn.

Wynn is an actor of all-encompass-' ing vanity and the living embodiment of Oscar Wilde's observation that to fall in love with one's self is the beginning of a life-long romance. As Lily in Love reminds us, there is something about playing a bad actor that brings out the best in a very good one. Christopher Plummer, who appears in movies that are sometimes beneath his talent and occasionally beneath his dignity, here makes the most of a unique opportunity. His virtuosity carries all before it and makes us forget the creaky artifice of the film and its dangerously inert pace. ness humor, but it was written by someone who clearly loves the worlds movtes and Broadway too much to attack them with any conviction.

Frank Cucci's script has its moments he is especially adept at catching the contradictory elements of boredom and self-importance that are peculiar to film sets. But apart from the character of Wynn, for which we surely owe more to Plummer than to Cucci, Lily in Love is an almost placid film. It unfolds in a way that is both pleasing and obvious; everything that' happens is inevitable. In' comedy, this can be extremely dangerous but in" Plummer and Smith, the film has more than it deserves. To the screenwriter, theirs is a marriage that is a convenience of the plot.

But in their hands, it is something of genuine interest. The husband, for all his impenetrable vanity, loves the or screen. Finney brought this off with incredible skill in The Dresser in a performance that never seemed schizoid. Plummer has been given one more hurdle in Lily in Love. He is a roaring lion of the theater who adopts the identity of another actor to win a part in a film.

The author of the screenplay is his wife (played by Maggie Smith) and she is in charge of choosing the leading man. The boozy husband gives up spouting some of Marlowe's more flowery lines and inhaling booze to sneak away and adopt the elaborate disguise. When he emerges, Fitzroy Wynn has become Roberto Teranova. His jowls have disappeared, his hair is blond and his manner is romantic and courtly. He is, in short, a gentleman and thus a far cry from Fitzroy Wynn.

Lily in Love abounds in show-busi Plummer's Wynn joins such recent memorable examples of this demanding kind of role as Peter OToole's Alan Swann in My Favorite Year (1982) and Albert Finney's stunning Sir in The Dresser (1983).
