WILLIAM McCAVITT County Native At Clarion A Penns'ylvanian who has returned to his home'state after a year and a half at the instructional communications center at Governor's State College in Chicago is providing a wealth of skills to Clarion State College during a two-year replacement of a faculty member on leave. He is Dr. William E. McCavitt, former Indiana University of Pennsylvania radio-television coordinator who has had broad experience in commercial radio and television. A native of Mount Union, Dr.

McCavitt is replacing Allan D. Larson, assistant professor of communication at Clarion, who is on leave for two years of study and research. The Shippensburg State College graduate, who received his M.S. in radio and television at Syracuse University and his D. Ed.

in higher education administration at PennState, founded and managed WIUP FM at Indiana and administered an extensive closed circuit television system at that institution. Dr. McCavitt has had a guiding hand in many facets of. radio-television broadcasting since his start as a disc jockey at WHUN. Huntingdon.

He had further basic experience at WCHA, Chambersburg, while an undergraduate at Shippensburg. and left the field entirely for two years lo teach commercial subjects at Bedford High School. Returning to his first love. Dr. McCavitt became co-director of the Learning Resources Center at Glassboro State College in New Jersey, where he established and managed station WGLS-FM, as assistant professor of education at that college for eight years.

Coming to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1966, he became coordinator of radio and television there and established and managed WIUP FM while serving as assistant chairman for the Learning Resources and Mass Media Department. He also taught undergraduate classes in audio visual education and graduate classes in Broadcasting at Indiana. Dr. McCavitt said he valued his experience in the somewhat unusual inner-city college in Chicago which serves primarily a commuting student body, many of whom are older business and professional people in adult-education type programs. "However, I'm basically a small town boy who prefers the country to the big city and I'm happy to be back in my homearea," he noted.

While in Chicago, he hosted five television programs on the NBC Knowledge Series over WMAQ-TV. which fed into the well-known "Today" show. Earlier, he produced and served as host for 25 public affairs programs for commercial television stations in Altoona and Johnstown, worked for the Allegheny Educational Broadcast Council (Channel 3, Penn State) as a utilization consultant and served as consultant for a commercial radio station seeking network affiliation and for various public schools in the installation and utilization of instructional television. He has published a number of articles in professional journals and is the author of the "Television Studio Operations Manual." Dr. McCavitt has been honored with the Presidential Certificate of Achievement at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the Certificate of Appreciation at Glassboro State College and from the ROTC at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the Certificate of Merit of the American Cancer Society.
