After she successfully battled breast cancer, however, she decided to devote her energy to environmental activism and volunteer work.

Her daughter Karen Youngbar, 36, of Pasadena, recalled that when she was 9, her mother organized neighborhood children to picket on the single road leading into Wagner's Point "because we didn't have paved roads to go to school." Jeannette Skrzecz, an environmental activist who fought chemical companies to protect her neighbors in Baltimore's Wagner's Point from illness, died of cancer late Friday at Mercy Medical Center. She was 56. The high-energy grandmother with short, spiky hair and snapping brown eyes was determined to see that she and her neighbors in Baltimore's working-poor enclave got a fair deal from the factories that surround their homes.

Family members said she was convinced that her colon and liver cancer was from exposure to pollution from the chemical plants. But doctors told her family her illness was just as likely to have been caused by genetics. "My mom was a very poor person, a person of little means," said a son, Army Sgt. "She's a real hero for activists everywhere, but especially in Baltimore," said Terry Harris, 37, a physicist and chairman of the local branch of the Sierra Club. "There was no one I knew who worked on issues as difficult as Jeannette did. And she did as much as anyone possibly could for her neighborhood."
