The Inquirer Btatf LONDON Australian veteran Tony Roche got a big boost on the eve of Wimbledon when he defeated John McEnroe, the highly regarded American teenager, 8-6, 9-7, yesterday in the finals of the $125,000 Queen's Club International tennis tournament.

Roche, 33, making what he says is his last tour of Britain, needed all his experience to master the plucky 19-year-old. McEnroe, the No. 11 seed for Wimbledon, always kept within reach in a match that ebbed and flowed with big serves and some tremendous returns. Roche needed six match points before hitting a winning backhand return of service to collect the title and first prize of $18,075. McEnroe, who last year became the youngest player to reach the Wimbledon semifinals and who turned professional only a week ago, earned $9,037.

Only once did he get the lead and that was at 2-1 in the second-set after a service break. Roche had his first match point at 7-6, but was beaten by a forehand volley by McEnroe. The Australian then dropped his service, but two games later, he broke McEnroe's service for the victory. 2ND Purse 54,000. Three-year-olds and up.

Lee Kuniman, Fox, 1. to last) lap and he was trying to catch (sic) Sneva. But you can't do that without showing yourself." Sneva, whose third-place finish gave him enough points to keep him atop the standings in his quest for a aeculiii audigui iiaiiuiioi maiii-pionship, confirmed Dallenbach's report. "I knew Rutherford was going to give me a 'slide job' on the last lap," Sneva said. "He did it to Wally the lap before and I just smoked by them.

Then he came up on me in the first turn and I knew he'd try it on me." It quickly became academic, however, as Sneva's car began to sputter because it was out of fuel. That marked the end of a less than successful day for not only the Reading-based Roger Penske team but for the entire Pennsylvania contingent. Sneva's teammate, Mario Andretti, managed to lead one lap the S4th to continue his string of having led every Schaefer 500 since the 1971 inaugural. However, the local hero from Nazareth still is looking for his first win here after retiring on lap 73 with gearbox failure. ager for the British-based Team McLaren who directed the Rutherford effort from the pits, thought they were back in the hunt as first one, then another, then a third car sputtered out of gas down the front straight, siiudiious ilnxi juniiian would bring out the caution flag, allowing the field to bunch up.

But the streak of failures didn't start until the 193d lap, three laps too late to help either Rutherford or Sneva, the only other driver still in the lead lap and with a chance to win the Schaefer 500, the second leg of auto racing's Triple Crown. But Rutherford's closing charge drew some criticism from the competition, namely Wally Dallenbach and Sneva. In the third turn of the 198th lap, Rutherford put an inside move on Dallenbach and the two touched wheels. "He did a very foolish thing," said Dallenbach who wound up fourth, two laps off the pace. "I knew what he had in mind but he didn't show himself.

It was just my goof gesture that let him go and it was my good gesture that almost put me into the wall. "I knew it was the white flag (next By Bill Simmons Inquirer Autc Bditor LONG POND, Pa. Before the start of yesterday's Schaefer 500, Johnny Rutherford had a feeling his even went so far as to tell his wife he was going to win. But it was not to be. What seemed to be a flat tire caused him to make an unscheduled pit stop on the 164th lap of the 200-lap chase around Pocono International Raceway's 2.5-mile tri-oval.

That left him more than 20 seconds in arrears, a handicap that he was unable to make up as Al Unser climaxed a near perfect drive in his Citicorp Lola-Cosworth with a 24.4-second victory. Rutherford had brought his Citicorp McLaren-Cosworth in for a routine fuel and tire stop only three laps earlier. But as soon as he got back on the track he knew something was wrong. "I thought for sure it was flat," Rutherford said after passing Tom Sneva's Norton Penske-Cosworth on the final lap to take second-place laurels for the second week in a row. Tyler Alexander, Americp man POCONO, From 1-C mark and was a factor the rest of the way.

He started from the 10th position in tne O-car Held and, taxing advantage of the caution periods that both permitted him to close up on the leaders and preserved precious fuel, moved to the lead for the first time on lap 75. Unser got back in front briefly at the midway point but, until then, it had been mostly the Danny Ongais show. Ongais and his black Inter-scope Parnelli-VPJ had started from the pole position and led almost at will on four occasions. But on lap 130, as he stormed down the long front straight, the engine failed and the do-or-die kid was on the sideline for the fourth time in eight 1978 starts. "Danny was running real good he always does," Unser said.

"If he had stayed in there, it would have been something a helluva finish. But you've got to have a little bit of luck to win any of these races. We had it today and he didn't." Unser also had a car that handled Just about perfectly on this sunny, comfortable afternoon. It handled so well that he was able to go the entire distance on one set of tires. That helped make his nit stons quicker, and the fact that he made only nine stops for fuel compared to 12 for Rutherford and 14 for Sneva did not hurt in the least.

In fact, it was Rutherford's Hth stop, on lap 164, that gave Unser such a comfortable margin at the finish. At that point, just three laps after he had made a routine pit stop and still retained the lead, Rutherford came in again to have what he thought was a flat right rear tire replaced. As it turned out, there was nothing wrong with the tire and it left Unser with a commanding lead. Unser lost the top spot to Sneva, then Rutherford after making his final fuel stop on the 177th lap. But it was just a matter of time.

On the 190th lap, Rutherford came in for a quick dose of fuel, allowing both Unser and Sneva to get by and spoil his hopes of ending one of his least productive periods since 1973. "It was just a typical hard day at work," said Unser, who has 34 Championship Trail victories, second only to Foyt's 59. "It couldn't have been all that hard, though, or I probably wouldn't be here." And for that not-too-hard day at work, Unser collected $89,296 from the purse of $370,450. That boosted his earnings in six races this year to $397,581. That's not exactly shabbv..
