Hope, 87, Realty Broker, Hunter By FRANK McDEVITT Inquirer Staff Writer Herbert Hope, former North Philadelphia real estate broker, bank president and big-game hunter, died Sunday at his home, 5907 Old York Rd. He was 87. Mr.

Hope had been in the real estate business from 1914 until about three years ago. He had first been associated with his father, the late James R. The younger Mr. Hope eventually went into business for himself and over the years had several offices, all in the neighborhood of Broad and Nedro.

He returned with thousands of feet of jungle wildlife films as well as the skins of a number of animals he had killed leopards, cheetahs, lions and a hippopotamus and he told a harrowing experience with crocodiles that brought him to the jaws of death. He related that he had often been forced to shoot animals to protect himself after they charged him while he was trying to photograph them. Once a crocodile climbed into his canoe and on another occasion a hippo surfaced under a whaleboat in which he was travelling up the Congo River and lifted the craft two feet out of the water.

"The most exciting experience," Mr. Hope told interviewers, "was in a storm at night on Lake Albert. MU8-4539. CLIVE BROOK Criticizes Conference ence, said that immediate ffood assistance to starvationridden nations probably would come from private relief organizations rather than governments. "I sensed the tremendous interplay of traditional power," said the Rev. Edward J. Brady, director of the college curriculum in peace and human development.

"'What I found missing was the power of compassion." Brady said he was more optimistic about governmental solutions to long-range hunger problems. But he said it was "almost blasphemous to say we're not interested in people who are starving now, just those who will be starving 10 years from now. things are going to be done," he said, "they are going to be done by little people like ourselves." Lawrence J. Bell, an economics professor, said that he also was disappointed in the conference but felt that the United States would provide more aid "than it is politically feasible for the (Ford) administration to admit now." The delegation, which returned last week, expressed displeasure at several aspects of the conference. They chose as a setting the mural in the college's Academy of Food Marketing, which depicts starving people reacting to their plight in various ways, including praying and attacking one another.

Brady said that the traditional setting of the conference, with committee meetings and cocktail parties, "made it difficult to get beyond what goes on in diplomatic surroundings." -give a memorial contribution. toward the conquest of heart disease.
