Defensive end Dwight White, an original and theh- youngest member of the Steelers' famed "steel curtain" line, announced Wednesday he was retiring to become a stockbroker in his adopted hometown of Pittsburgh. White, 31, is the third veteran to retire since the end of the 1980 season.

Running back Rocky Bleier quit to pursue a career iri broadcasting, and safety Mike Wagner retired to a new position as a commodities broker. Last fall, guard Gerry "Moon" Mullins retired after the Steelers waived him, even though other teams had expressed interest in him. White's retirement statement was brief but "This culminates what I consider to be the greatest 10 years in my 31-year existence," he said. "1 make my home here now and a lot of good things have happened here. For a good old boy from East-Texas State, I didn't do too bad coming here." White joined the Steelers in 1971 as a fourth-round draft choice from East Texas State, and immediately became a starter.

He was a Pro Bowl selection in 1972 and 1973 and played crucial roles in all four Super Bowl victories. He is best remembered, however, for his performance in the Steelers' first Super Bowl, IX, when he came out of the hospital with a high fever and down 20 pounds to held lead the team to a 16-6 victory over Minnesota. inia Impresses In Whipping Wake Forest Devaney In Hall Of Fame West Branch at Mount Union, 8 p.m. SATURDAY, JANUARY 31 BASKETBALL College Men Albright at Juniata, 8 p.m. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1 BASKETBALL Huntingdon City League Coaches Corner vs.

Rutledge Develops Cracks" By DAVID HURLBERT PHOENIX, Ariz. (UPD- Kevin Rutledge to remember until more than a year later an alleged confrontation with football Coach Frank Kush that preceeded his filing of a $2.2 million suit, fin youtell me why the NFL has Atlanta to Western division and in the Eastern division? I jamsssoro.

Nia Warren Platt, representing Kush in the suit, spent nearly four hours questioning Rutledge Wednesday as apparent inconsistencies surfaced in the testimony of the former Arizona State University punter. Rutledge claims Kush slugged him during a game at the University of Washington in 1978 and Kush and another defendant, Bill Maskill, a former ASU assistant coach, attempted to force him to leave the university. Rutledge transferred to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in 1979 and is still a student and football player thpre. Kush now is coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League. Rutledge, who spent his second day on the witness stand Wednesday, played for Kush at Arizona State University in 1977 and 1978, Platt introduced evidence that showed Rutledge could.

not remember an alleged confrontation with Kush until a year after the suit was filed and initially did not recall Kush had called him a "liar," Rutledge had testified earler his trouble with Kush began during pre-season at the Sun Devils' mountain training camp, when Rutledge tackled an injured quarterback Kush had said was not to be tackled. He testified Kush cursed at him, but Platt read from an October 1979 deposition in which Rutledge said he did not recall "any special incidents" with Kush during the training session. The attorney asked Rutledge why he did not explain to Kush as he had said in his testimony that Maskill had told him to tackle any player regardless of who it was. "1 hate to dig a grave and then fall in it," said Rutledge, explaining he never heard even a coach talk back to Kush. Platt als.o referred to Rutledge's testimony that Kush called him a "liar" in front pf the entire team alter Kush told him he could not eit out the 1978 season.

I love the tournament, I love the people behind it and, of course, I love Pebble Beach." Nicklaus and Miller are almost as emphatic. "If I had one last round of golf to play, says Nicklaus, "it would be at Pebble I've played some of the best golf of my life at Pebble Beach," says Miller. "As for the Crosby, it's kind of a circus with all the amateurs and three courses, but it's fun.

Anyone going into a Crosby thinking he will win is plain out of his many factors other than playing well figure in winning." Nicklaus. impatient when rain continued to fall on the Monterey Peninsula, jumped into his private jet, flew to Palm Springs and practiced all day Wednesday.
