That was all the Cats got in the half, while BC rolled up 15 first downs and a 285-39 edge in total yardage. And they didn't rest on their laurels. There was almost five minutes gone in the third period before Villanova crossed the midfield stripe under its own power.

"It was unbelievable," Weaver concluded. Only to those who watched it. Esposito, who won the Ralph Pasquariello Sr. Award as the game's most valuable player, carried 20 times for 155 yards. His backfield mate, Keith Bar-nette, was almost as effective, gaining 101 yards on 23 carries and also scoring twice.

"We played a little better," said Boston College coach Joe Yukien, referring to last week's 35-11 loss at Pittsburgh. "I thought the defense played exceptionally well, but I guess you would have to say we had a well-balanced effort." no ill effects on a 35-yard scoring scamper that capped a seven-play 76-yard march and got the Eagles flying to their third win in six starts. "We came ready to play," said Esposito, who also scored from four yards out in the final of the second period for a 28-0 halftime lead. "It was an important game for us," said Esposito, whose last trip to Philadelphia (a 34-7 loss to Temple) was not so happy. "It'll be a big boost for us.

We go home now for West Virginia, Tulane and Syracuse in a row." Van Alstine Powers W. Joe, brother of Wolves' Coach Billy Joe, scored on runs of 2, 3 and 4 yards and carried 22 times. His first TD helped Cheyney (5-2, 3-2 league) gain a 15-0 halftime lead. The other touchdown came on a 49 yard pass from Allen Hurst to John Mackrey.

Mackrey also caught a 45-yard pass in a 98-yard drive leading to Joe's first touchdown. Cheyney safety Reggie Beard intercepted three passes. Bloomsburg (1-5-1, 1-3 league) had only one sustained drive, being held on downs at the Cheyney 25. WeYeputtiiig on ice By BILL SIMMONS Inquirer Staff Writer There were maybe 3,200 of the 11,100 Villanova Stadium spectators who saw the Wildcats win Saturday afternoon. They were the ones who attended the varsity basketball team's intra-squad scrimmage in the adjacent field-house.

Even that couldn't have helped their spirits much because the beating the Cats took on the gridiron will not easily be forgotten. "We were outhit, outhus-tled, outplayed and out-coached," said Villanova coach Jim Weaver following Boston College's 55-7 romp. "We were beaten soundly to say the least." It was Villanova's worst setback since a 54-0 rout at Army in 1960, and was the most points scored by an opponent since Army's Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard went inside and outside for an 83-0 victory in 1944. Villanova's third straight loss in what is now a 3-4 season and fading left the effervescent Weaver bewildered for the first time in his rookie year at the helm. "I don't know where it went wrong," Weaver said in the tomblike atmosphere of the locker room.

"I thought we had a good week of practice and that we were emotionally ready to play our best game of the year." The Cats won the opening coin flip, but from almost the first play it was evident that that was all they were going to win. Mike Frazier opened at quarterback in place of Brian Sikorski because Weaver felt he was better at running the option and the coach wanted to establish a running game. He never did with Frazier or with Sikorski, who replaced him late in the first half. Three plays netted two yards before the usually reliable Scott Kaufman had his punt go off the side of his foot to give BC the ball on the Wildcats' 37. It was a hole Villanova never would get out of.

Ten plays later, the Eagles scored with Mike Godbolt going the final yard on a pitch around the left side. BC got the ball back immediately on John Murphy's interception but beat itself on that series with the first three of seven penalties for a total of 91 yards. There was no missing the next time. All-East halfback Mike Esposito, coming back after missing seven quarters with a knee injury, showed Teiepnoto UPI Villanova's Gene Fasulo (24), Steve Ramsey (S3) Guy Van Alstine scored three touchdowns Saturday afternoon as host West Chester beat Kutztown, 30-21, in an Eastern Division Pennsylvania Conference game at Farrell Stadium. The victory gave West Chester (7-0 overall) a 5-0 conference log.

Kutztown (2-5 overall) is 1-4 in the conference. Van Alstine ran five yards for an opening-period touchdown and his seven -yard jaunt in the second quarter enabled West Chester to enjoy a 14-0 halftime lead. Van Al-stine's third score of the day came on a six-yard pass from Warren Mays and gave the host team a 21-7 advantage in the third period after Kutz-town's Bruce Harper ran five yards for a score.
