18-D Sunday, Oct. 13, 1974 Philadelphia Inquirer Ylrpnk Tech Hands So. Carolina Fifth Loss From Inquirer Wire Services COLUMBIA, S.C. Bruce Arians and Phil Rogers each scored twice Saturday night to lead Virginia Tech to a 31-17 victory over South Caro lina, which is off to its worse season start since it began playing football in 1894. It was the first win of the season for VPI, which dropped its first four games.

The Scoreboard South Carolina, in its last season under Coach Paul Dietzel, has not won a game in five starts. South Carolina led by 17-7 at halftime, but the Gobblers scored the first three times they had the ball in the second half as they gained yardage at will through the middle of the Gamecock line. Wayne Latimer brought the Gobblers within 17-10 with a 30-yard field goal with just over five minutes gone in the second half. Arians scored from the two to cap a 75-yard drive the next time VPI had the ball, and Latimer's extra point tied the scored at 17-17. After forcing the Game Philadelphia Inquirer GERARD C.

Buffalo, meanwhile, was in its usual state of suspended animation that always accompanies it to the Spect- that Buffalo goalie Rocky Farr fumbled off his glove. The puck just dribbled wide. "For some guys there is no pressure in something like that," Crisp said. "But for me, I've never had such a chance." Crisp will have to wait some more but his two successes of the day put the game away.

He slid a. 40-footer under Farr at 4:17 of the first period and made it FLYERS, From 1-D said with his usual grin. "What else could he do for me?" Crisp wound up that big slapshot that he is not noted for and got off a butterfly cocks to punt, Tech marched 78 yards with Rogers going in from the six for the winning touchdown. Rogers got another touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a two-yard run to kill all hopes of a South Carolina homecoming victory. BOSTON COLLEGE 31 WILLIAM MARY 16 NEWTON, Mass.

Boston College unleashed an awesome ground attack, helping Mike Kruczek throw two touchdown passes to Dave Vumbach, in romping over William Mary. The host Eagles moved the ball almost at will, but were hurt by costly mistakes and penalties that enabled William Mary to keep the score respectable. BC piled up 301 yards in SO plays on the ground. Reserve halfback Earl Strong carried 19 times for 106 yards, while Keith Barnett netted 104 yards in 23 carries. Senior running sensation Mike Espasito helped set up two touchdowns by carrying nine times for 71 yards before limping off with a knee injury late in the opening period.

35, Paul VI, N. J. North Catholic 35, Kenrick 4 By CHUCK NEWMAN Inauirer Staff Writer Simon Nolet will step off the team bus at approximately 5 o'clock this evening, walk through the Spectrum corridors and, for the first time in his National Hockey League career, dress in the visitors' locker room. The likeable ex-Flyer is now a member of the expansionist Kansas City Scouts, who will try out the Flyers tonight at 7:05. And he will take the ice as the visitors' captain.

Playing with an expansion team is not easy on the morale. But Nolet has known adversity before, even wiih a winner. The 32-year old right winger was strictly a part-timer with the Flyers. Vic Stasiuk made a habit of ignoring him and Nolet got only part-time duty under Fred Shero. But the Flyers' coach never underestimated Leafs' 4 (Run failed) BC FG Steinlort SO WM B.C.

But we have a pretty good bunch of guys here." Nolet, who scored the Scout's first goal against Toronto, said he still doesn't feel completely comfortable as an ex-Flyers. "I don't think I'm over the shock yet," he said. "I guess it will really hit me on Sunday when I walk into the Spectrum and go to the other room." That may not be all that hits Nolet at the Spectrum. The Flyers have a habit of using some tough checking on forwards they consider dangerous scorers. For confirmation, see Buffalo's Rick Martin.

The Sabres have not won here in 11 games since joining the NHL (in 12 games the Flyers are 10-0-2). But Buffalo coach Floyd Smith says it's a mistake. "If we had needed the game, we would have won it," he said without so much as a smile.

But can Buffalo survive when its French Connection of Martin, Gil Perreault anil Rene Robert is getting only six shots on net? The question was answered with a question. "Can any team win without its top line going well?" Smith asked. It's obvious that Buffalo can't. ICING Bernie Parent will get the night off when the Flyers meet Kansas City tonight. Nolet got a pretty fair raise from the Scouts and is around the $70,000 per year level. It's likely his contract is also spiced with some bonus clauses for scoring. But he says he'll miss the chance to cash in on some of that playoff money he hauled in last year. Nolet cashed a $19,500 check as a member of the Stanley Cup champions last season.

Nolet's scoring statistics in Philadelphia were particularly impressive considering the amount of ice time he's seen. He's third on the all-time Flyers' scoring list with 93 goals and 108 assists in 358 many of which he played in only briefly. He had an impressive 19 goals in only 52 games last season.
