W. Virginia Strikes Early, Then i Sunday, Sept. 22, 1974 Philadelphia Inquirer 5 3 Molds Off K From Inquirer Wirt Surtticta MORGANTOWN, W. Va. West Virginia relied o na rugged goal line defense and a crunching first haif ground attack to defeat a mistake ridden Kentucky 16-3 here Saturday. The Mountaineers, now 1-1 on the year, used Kentucky fumbles, penalties and missed Assignments to, build a 16-0 lead in the first half. Then the WVU defense took over, limiting Kentuckey to only a 42-yard field goal by John Pierce late in the first half. In the second half, Kentucky twice had drives stopped at the West Virginia three yard line by an alert Mountaineer defense. Although West Virginia failed to score in the second half, it was able to consume precious minutes with its 'three-pronged ground attack of Heywood Smith, Artie Owens and Ron Lee. In all, WVU ground out 263 yards against the youthful Kentucky defense. West Virginia went 99 yards after the opening kickoff to score the only points it needed. Smith went the final yard to cap an eight-play drive. The key play in the surge was a 75-yard sprint by Owens, who finished the day EAST as the game's leading rusher with 100 yards, most of that in the first half.
