followed him As Browne broke through the foliage half a dozen mounted policemen charged after him When he reached the foot of the Capi tol steps there was an exciting dia logue between him and the police The police threw themselves upon Browne grabbed the Hag of peace smashed the staff seized Browne by the shoulders and thrust him through the crowd several hundred feet to the sidewalk Clubs Constitutional The dramatic marshal was dragged to the police station I When the police had escorted Coxey to his carriage he clambered into the vehicle and a loud cheer went up from the crowd Then the policemen lost their heads and falling upon a group of luckless colored women clubbed them The army had not broken ranks in all the tumult The humble bass drummer started the solemn boom upon his instrument and the Common wealers fell into step and with Coxey bowing to the right and left amid wild cheering the procession turned down Second street to South and started to its new camp in the malarious region in the extreme southern part of the city Christopher Columbus Jones leader of the Philadelphia contingent was also arrested He and Browne will be arraigned in the Police Court to mor row on a charge of violation of a special act of Congress against assem blages in the Capitol grounds The penalty is a fine not to exceed $100 or imprisonment not to exceed sixty days or both Governor Northen of Georgia pointed Patrick Walsh United States Senator to fill the vacancy created by tne death ot Senator Colquitt Walsh is a Catholic and the A A assailed the Governor for appointing him be cause of his religious belief Dr Hawthorne the celebrated Baptist Minister made the attack of the A A on Governor Northen the subject of his discourse last Sunday evening He declared that any Catholic Dr Hawthorne said that all good people whatever their religious belief were equally devoted to the country and they should unite against an or ganization which is visionary The ministers of will go into the Capitol grounds as in dividuals They cannot prevent us doing THE MARCH At 10:15 the industrial army was ready and out of Brightwood Driving Parkit started for the city As the caravan worked its way down the three mile stretch of woods to this city it was a most fantastic array Nine mounted police rode ahead Then came Carl Browne in a buckskin suit mounted on a big gray percheron stallion and waved a small flag Next was a creamy white prancing circus steed bearing Miss Mamie Coxey in the role of Goddess of Peace She is a slender handsome girl of 17 with long golden hair She wore a pure white riding habit Her head was covered by a little rimless blue cap and she shaded her face with a tiny parasol Altogether she was a picture of such unusual beauty that a spontaneous
