Birthday Celebrated In a itting Manner by the Paradise Sch ooh Last Thursday night the public school here gave an entertainment in honor of Washington's birthday which was without doubt the best ever given in the valley The variety in the selec tions given the excellence of the music and the thorough drill in all the parts all contributed towards making it a most enjoyable evening for the spectators The exercises were held in Kemler's Hall and when the curtain rose there were about one hundred and sixty people present After tle school choir had sung the opening address in honor of Washington was delivered very effeetiveiyby Mr Artie Gillilan He was followed by Irving Case who in a clever and entertaining manner told why he should like to be like Washington Seymour Case who has ability for mimicry far above the average then brought down the house with an amusing account of the Irish nrm who mistook Mt Vesuvius for the Hill of Howth It is impossible in a brief sketch to do credit to all who took part for all the program was good and every performance received a generous round of applause Several however are worthy of special mention Bessie and Myrtle Purviauce the gifted sing ers in their character song of Peggy and Uncle would have been a decided hit upon any stage In addition to their sweet voices they are perfectly at ease upon the stage and have a knowledge of what is re quired of them far beyond the ir years Little Elsie Case in her role as the re jected young lady in the character song of could not be beaten Mrs Purviance and Miss McMillan favored the audience with solos which judging from the applause were thoroughly appreciated The hit of the evening however was the dia logue Irish Love Gertrude Abel showed marked ability as the Irish servant girl who could not read and she together with Seymour Case as a colored girl and Hattie Kiley as the mistress kept the audience in a continual roar Edith Gilbert was a decided success in her recitation on Washington and Boy and Minnie Brad shaw in their parts exceeded even the expectations of their friends There were many other parts equally deserv ing of praise but which cannot be taken up on account of lack of space No part of the program dragged and none of it was tame or monotonous A specialty was made of the musical part of the exercises and a great deal of the success of the evening is attributed to this Great credit is due to Mr Lewers and the other teachers of the public school for their careful drilling of the scholars and painstaking efforts to make the entertainment a success Paradise eb 27th THE NEVADA EXHIBIT What a Caitsoiiite Says on the Subject Carson ebruary 27 1894 Editor Journal: Having expressed my views relative to the outcome of the Midwinter air as refers to Nevada interests I feel desirous of learning if they coincide with yours especially so since the proposition to ignore all annual fairs in Nevada has been formulated by A Bendei' of the fc railroad As I stated in my communication to the Tribune on the subject I can see no possible benefit that can possibly accrue to our State from the California fair True the ex penditure of the to se cure the grand exhibit at Chicago doubtless ultimated in benefit from the fact that our resources were com paratively unknown to the majority of the Eastern people and entirely so to visitors from other nations but to argue that the same will result from the California exhibit seems so utterly fallacious that men of ordinary judg ment would laugh the idea to scorn Nevada's financial condition does not seem to justify the donation of money to aid the Midwinter air and most certainly it must appear ridiculous to ignore our annual fairs for such a pur pose California is by no means Ne friend but on the contrary the metropolis of that State whose palatial residences and ten story buildings were erected by the products of our silver mines has always antagonized our interests and to day would swallow up not only the mines but the agri cultural property of the State and rob the farmers of their means for irrigat ing the arid lands The mony which is now and will continue to be drawn from this semi impoverished State for the purpose of visiting the fair had better be retained so that merchants and other business men might be enabled to collect their just dues and our native annual fair be successfully managed and well pat ronized These are not only my own but the opinions of hundreds in this part of the State and it would afford myself and others uch pleasure to learn your views on the subject Deacon Sutro Tunnel Litigation On Monday next at 10 a Judge Thos Hawley of the Court will render his decision in an import ant case Sims vs The Union Trust Company of New York It involves important points in relation to the ownership of the Sutro Tunnel The decision is awaited with much interest by stockholders of the Company and the legal fraternity generally Tribune Ralph pleased that you have at last entered on the treatment which is to restore you to moral and mental manhood and relieve your friends of that awe of a something impending that restless uneasy unspeakable feel ing which as a precursor of impending calamity a coming event which casts its before destroys their con fidence and precludes their candor No man addicted to drink to such an extent that he is not master of his ac tions can either hope or expect that cordial fellowship which ought to ex ist among social and business associ ates or no man can say with assur ed truthfulness as his safeguard that the courteous affable and intelligent gentleman is more than glittering ex terior In a moment the man avaunt and the demon enter the trans ition from comparative sobriety to drunken inebriety is effected in a twinkling and with it the mortification of friends and the anguish and shame of those nearest and dearest on earth bursts forth in all its appalling and naked bitterness How many heart broken wives have hoped against hnpe for the reformation of their brutalized husband have prayed ferverantly and unceasingly with streaming eyes and bleeding heart that the good God of Gods would grant this their one fer vent sincere inspired prayer and how many God of infinite mercy pity them have died of a broken heart have gone down to their graves wrapt in the gloomy shadow that gathering like the clouds of a mighty storm at last burst the boundaries of restraint and left only desolation and death behind That medical discovery which eman cipates souls from the thraldom of death and hell is next to the redeem ing blood of Christ the greatest boon yet bestowed on finite mortals God bless the discoverer and sanctify purify expand and extend the applica tion of his remedy until sobriety is no longer a hope laden and burdened with long years of bitter disappoint ment but a living existing and ac knowledged fact glorious and universal reality Every Keeley and every Har disarmament is only possible as the result of an exhausting general war and that it is impossible to postpone that war after the limit of pre i paratory resources has been reached There is a widespread feeling that cer tain nations are already beginning to pay the penalties of overtraining while others have attained their maximum fighting power This is the real explana tion of the prevalent war scare It is tot surprising therefore that the pos sibility of a peaceful attainment of the desired object is earnestly considered Newspapers reflect this spirit from various continental capitals The Times quotes an unnamed foreign statesman as authority for a proposed project for partial relief from the present situation He says: "It is sought to remedy the present state of things not by disarmament but in a way offering the advantages of dis armament and without affecting the principles on which armaments are le ing increased "Universal military service now ex ists in military countries and cannot be meddled with The average length of active service is three years Now it has been proved that a single year is am ple for drilling conscripts and teaching them to handle arms The other two years are devoted to movements and marches or in other tvords to what is called seasoning the men Many good judges hold that the training which makes old soldiers is acquired only by five or seven service and that in time of peace three service has not such superiority over one year as to justify triple the expense only means which I can see of putting an end to the senseless outlay is to make a 12 service obligatory on all If anybody should propose a universal service of five or seven years he would be thought mad Universal service has been considered compatible with a reduction of seven or five years to three thus materially lessening the ex pense After years of experience it is now seen that three years are alsoincom patible with universal service therefore is more logical hnrurno or conformable with economic exigencies than to reduce by two thirds the burdens which are getting intolera ble from which before long lie only way of i cipe will Le by utilizing
