Monday, May 26, 197S Philadelphia Inquirer 4-B THEARTS-- 'Scetcies' at Freedom Has Them in Stitches Hackman Connects In Trench' Sequel Little Theater By DESMOND RYAN Inquirer Movie Critic "French Connection II" is a movie -I 1 vv 4 1 T' a jt'i in marked contrast to its celebrated predecessor, "The French Connection," and, after watching Gene Hackman curse and stomp his way around Marseilles, one can only say "vive la difference." For "French Connection II" unlike such sequels as "Godfather Part II was born of something more than greed and aridity of invention. And the main reason for the considerable achievement of "French Connection II" is the return of Hackman as the boorish and volatile New York detective Doyle. Where the enormously successful 1971 film by William Friedkin was both a classic thriller and a brilliant essay on the Big Apple's sleazy underworld of cynical cops and crooks, this sequel is an expansion of the character of Doyle. It lacks the tautness and punch of the original, but Hackman's one-man effort to undo Franco-American relations rather be a lamp post in New York than the president of France," he snarls, between oaths) and the immense power of his screen presence sustain the film. Doyle is in the drug-trafficking center of Marseilles to heap obscenities and contempt on the French populace By MARY MARTIN NIEPOLD Inguirtr Entertainment editor When people start poking fun at themselves, it usually means they've got a pretty good hold on what's good and what's bad and especially what's ridiculous.

When blacks start poking fun at themselves, just about everything looks ridiculous, and they savor every little piece of the ethnic pie they cut into. Up at Freedom Theater, a 9-year old black community theater at Broad and Master Streets, director John Allen has once again empas-sioned his actors with the spirit of mirth. And if it's not obvious that the actors are blowing their funny-fuses while performing Freedom's current play, "Sketches," just check out the cackles of your bent-over fellow theater-goers. The whole room feels something like a midnight Chiristmas party with Redd Foxx as Santa Claus. It all starts In a shabby neighborhood bar where actor Frank L.

Drummond portrays the bartender, "Jive," a saucy middle-aged host to a parade of neighborhood stereotypes who ramble in and out of his premises, each with their own story and each story splitting the sides of its audience just because the stereotypes are so recognizable and the dialogue so accurately rich. There's the would-be songwriter who'll always be would-be. There's a confrontation between a drunk (classically played by Johnnie Hobbs Jr.) and a do-good community worker (superciliously played by Mets Suber). Detectives, a blue-collar worker, a foul-mouthed youth, you name it, drop in. When two Sanctified Sisters arrive and eventually imbibe on the side, the fun really starts.

Before it's over, they've cut loose on a gospel-inspired song that glorified the kind of "juice that'll put a little spark in your old man." By the second act, Jive's bar is a slick haven for his friends, music numbers are expanded to include a funky rock number. It's all good-natured enough, no heavy messages hidden a happy two hours that relies more on content than style. "Sketches" runs Friday through Sunday through June 22. Acting Classes Acting classes begin this Tuesday at Society Hill Playhouse, 507 S. Eighth St.

Classes will concentrate on improvisation, theater games, exercises and scene study and will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. until July 3. For information call Rav Buffington at the Playhouse at WA 3-0210. Pocket Playhouse The Pocket Playhouse under the direction of Mark Conti is gearing up for a re-opening this fall as a center city repertory company. Conti, a veteran of Hedgerow Theater from 1962 to 1966, last directed Pocket Playhouse, from 1968 to 1970, when it was judged "Best Small Theater" in Pennsylvania.

Helping kick off their reappearance will be a massive Spring Gala this Wednesday. Angela Lansbury, star of "Gypsy" currently playing at the Valley Forge Music Fair, will make an appearance at the party in the role of honorary chairperson to Pocket Playhouse. The party, open to the public, will be from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Bicentennial Ballroom of the Philadelphia Hilton Hotel, 34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard. CLINT EASTWOOD dangles on safety line 4,000 feet above ground in scene from "The Eiger Sanction." Few Peaks Reached By 'Eiger Sanction' in general and the gendarmes in particular and to renew his search for Charnier (Fernando Rey), the suave villain of "the French Connection." The port and its rabbit warren streets serve as the backdrop for an assortment of chases and fights ably concocted by director John Franken-heimer.

Charnier's gang, in an effort to ascertain what Doyle knows about a forthcomig drug shipment, kidnap him. Then, in one of the film's weaker ironies, they force enough heroin into him in a fortnight to turn him into an addict. The cantankerous cop is thrown out of a speeding car outside Marseilles police headauarters, where his reluctant ally (Bernard Fresson) throws him into a cell and forces him to undergo a cold turkey withdrawal. Hackman is riveting in what en--sues, enduring his agony and lapsing into rambling discourses on the aspirations of his youth and the New York Yankees. Interspered in all this are his continuing xenophobic insights on matters Gallic "Frogs can't eat chocolate," he observes.

"Makes them jump backward." It is a performance of raw power, full of blue-collar venom, and it pulls "French Connection II" together. Rey and Fresson are able in support, and there is even a cameo appearance by ancient Cathleen Nesbitt as a drug-addicted crone. The finale of "French Connection II" is not the equal of the consummate chase sequence that ended the original, but that would be expecting a little too much. "Popeye" Doyle is holding forth at Eric Theaters. Record $950,000 Paid for a Gauguin Aiociated Pre NEW YORK A wildly colored Tahitian portrait by Paul Gauguin has been sold for $950,000, the highest price ever paid at auction for this artist and reportedly the third highest price ever paid for a post-Impressionist The painting, called "Hina Na-ruru," was sold just 10 years ago for $245,000 at Sotheby Parke Bernet, the same gallery where it was sold Wednesday night.

The rise in value since 1965 was $705,000. C. Gaspo Catano, a dealer in Florence, Italy, bought the painting for an unidentified Swiss collector. The sale brought a total of Fearing a Kidnaping, Sinatra Cancels Concert tion" promises all kinds of silliness, and we are not disappointed. The head of the American, espionage service is a germ-prone albino who somehow passed the physical and rose to pick Eastwood's targets.

The film lurches between James Bond campiness and taking itself seriously. It would be a disservice to public intelligence and the miniscule tension of the plot to discuss how Eastwood winds up on the north face with three other climbers one of whom is a suspected enemy agent he is assigned to kill. The ending is as preposterous as the film that preceded it. Between climbs, George Kennedy a mountaineering instructor curses fluently and inventively (I suspect from chagrin at being involved in this venture). The estimable Jack Cassidy is even more embarrassing as a simpering homosexual.

In fact, the only reason I could offer for scaling the mountainous inanity of "The Eiger Sanction" is that it's there. -DESMOND RYAN Like the mountain from which it derives its. title, "The Eiger Sanction" is an uphill climb. The climax of this improbable and ludicrously conceived thriller finds Clint Eastwood clinging to the north face of the Eiger. The mountain's face is infinitely more expressive than Eastwood's countenance, which, as we have grown to expect, remains rigid and impervious to whatever life offers.

"The Eiger Sanction," which opened Wednesday at the Budco Goldman, is drawn from the Treva-nian novel of the same name. The cunning and skill of the book are conspicuously absent from this screen translation which Eastwood himself directs. Eastwood is Jonathan Hemlock, an ill-paid professor of art history who has conceived a bizarre form of academic moonlighting. He assassinates people for the government. He is handsomely paid for carrying out these so-called "sanctions," and the money goes to increasing his private hoard of original masterpieces of painting.

With such a homicidal dilettante as its initial premise, "The Eiger Sanc United Prett International NEW YORK Spokesmen for Frank Sinatra said yesterday that he had canceled a concert scheduled in Berlin today because of attacks on him in the Berlin press and because of a concern that he might become the target of a kidnaping attempt. Sinatra is in London during a tour that includes 10 scheduled appearances in seven countries. The statement accused the Berlin press of "a relentless and scurrilous attack on Mr. Sinatra engaging in an orgy of vitriolic lies relating to his personal and professional life. "More important," it said, "there have been repeated disseminations of stories in the Berlin press with rumors and speculations that when Frank Sinatra comes to Berlin he will be kidnaped or otherwise subject to physical attack." Sinatra has just finished two appearances in West Germany, at Munich and Frankfurt.
