Noll Is Upset By Mascot By GARY TAYLOR UPI Sports Writer HOUSTON (UPI) Pittsburgh Steelers coach Chuck Noll wants "Krazy George," the Houston Oilers' drum- whacking, noise-making cheerleader, banned from NFL games. Nolls, irked about the noise during Thursday night's game in the Astrodome, said he was going to check with NFL officials to determine whether something could be done to stop the antics of George Henderson, who jumps around, bangs his drum and organizes Houston fans into ear-blasting chants and cheers. Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw was unable to audible at the line of scrimmage because of the din created by Henderson and 53.960 fans and afterward complained of a roaring headache. Running back Franco Harris said the noise was "really unfair." The Steelers' unhappiness surfaced after their 6-0 loss to the Oilers. Oilers' safety Mike Reinfeldt said a key to the victory was rattling Bradshaw early in the game, and he said he believed the noise worked to Houston's favor.

"I guess we did get him rattled because he never settled down the entire game," said Reinfeldt, who intercepted two passes. "I could tell Terry was having problems. There were a lot of times when I couldn't even hear him call the signals." Noll's distraction began before the game as fans on opposite sides of the Astrodome set up a competitive chant "Houston" and "Oilers" at the direction of Henderson. Noll turned to face Henderson and then watched each section bellow out its part. Henderson started cheerleading at North American Soccer League games, worked for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1978 and last year worked for several NFL teams.

"Every time we got the ball on offense, the drummer started in on us. Then the fans started in," Noll said. "That's about as illegal as anything I've seen. I don't know if it's legal but it works." He said there was a possibility "we'll start doing that in Pittsburgh if we can." Oilers marketing director Mike McClure called Noll's comments "sour grapes" and said Noll was mistaken in charging that Henderson called for noise only when Pittsburgh had the ball. "It was done when both teams had the ball.

I've got to think he (Noll) has never been to Clemson, S.C., Ann Arbor, or Norman, on the day of a game. The game belongs to the fans." North Carolina Passes Late Test, Wins 78-76 DAILY NIWS, Edmonton May Clean Its House EDMONTON, Alberta (UPI) The New York Rangers feel their fortunes are rising, but a housecleaning may be due for the Edmonton Oilers if their three-game home stand turns into disaster. "We had six days to prepare for this one," said Oilers' Coach Glen Sather Friday nightm after the Rangers whipped his team, 5-1, in the NHL's only game. "There were a couple of ways we could have played this one (but) you know what happened." Ron Greschner attributed the Rangers' improved play to interim Coach Craig Patrick, who replaced Fred Shero Nov. 22.

"We all feel relaxed playing for Craig," Greschner said. "He's shown us how to play disciplined hockey." The Rangers, who raised their record to 8-15-4, started out hot and scored three times in the opening period. Ranger rookie Mike Allison, with help from Anders Hedberg, scored at 2:53. At 13:05 Pave Silk added what became the winning goal, with Barry Beck rounding out the scoring at 18:47. Only Wayne Gretzky got on the Scoreboard in the second period, with his 12th goal of the season coming at 10:59 to make the score, 3-1.

Allison and Hedberg picked up two additional- goals for the Rangers in the last period at 2:17 and 16:14 respectively. It's no wonder Edmonton got only 20 shots on the Hanger net, Sather said, because the club was woefully lacking in agressiveness. "We threw two body checks all night. Don Murdoch had one, Curt Braekenbury had the pjtljer. yjjjj csfl't win with that amount ol being be sjid.

ByCATHRlNEWOLF UPI Sports Writer Last-minute situations generally are not a problem for North Carolina Coach Dean Smith. The creator of the infamous "four corners" offense simply pre-empts the possibility of a pressure-filled finish by going into the patented stall soon as his team has a nice little second-half lead. Smith has been so used to doing that, he hasn't bothered drilling his team in strategy. Or last-minute situations, for that matter. They'll be working on both next week.

"The last minute they deserved to win," Smith said Friday night, after Duke battled North Carolina down to the wire before losing, 78-76, to the Tar Heels in the first round of the Big Four Classic. "A free throw or two would have beaten us." Luckily for Smith, UNC got the free throws. Matt Doherty and Jim Braddock hit one each in the last 12 seconds to give North Carolina its fifth victory in as many starts. "We hadn't worked on the four corners this year," said Smith, who put the Tar Heels into the four corners with a one-point lead and minutes left to play. "We wanted to do it with a bigger lead, but I let it get down to one point.

We missed four consecutive shots with a seven-point lead." The Tar Heels meet Wake Forest, who blasted North Carolina State, 87-57, in the second game tonight, in the last scheduled championship of the early-season, an all- ACC event. In other games involving top teams, fifth-ranked Maryland routed Wagner, 96-73, and Syracuse ripped Kent State, 81-65, in the Carrier Classic; No. 10 Missouri downed West Texas State, 88-70, in the Show Me Classic and, in the Fiesta Classic, Iowa topped Cincinnati, 69-64, and Arizona State drubbed Montana State 92-71. Greg Manning scored a career-high 29 points to power Maryland into a Carrier Classic final against Syracuse. Leo Raupins, Danny Schayes and Marty Headd each scored 12 points and Erich Santifer added 11 to lead the Orangemen over Kent State.

Curtis Berry and Ricky Frazier scored 20 points each to keep Missouri undefeated in the eight-year history of the ShowMe Classic. Lamar, which edged Pittsburgh, 67-65, behind a 30-point performance by Mike Olliver, plays Missouri in the final. Vincent Brookins put Iowa ahead for good with a key basket early in the second half and the Hawkeyes held on to advance to a final against Arizona State. Cincy pulled to 58-57 with 3:39 left, but Iowa rallied for a five-point lead with 2:12 left. Byron Scott hit 19 points to lead five Arizona State players in scoring double figures against the Grizzlies, who settled for a 20-point, 53-33 advantage at the intermission to wrap up the game early.

Heisman Winner Running back George Rogers of South Carolina hugs the Heisman Trophy he won Dec. 1. The nation's leading rusher this fall, Rogers is the first Gamecock player ever to win the award, presented annually by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York to the best college football player in the nation. Pitt defensive end Hugh Green finished second in the balloting. (UPI Photo) Former Jet Gets Shot At Revenge Veeck Says Sale Not Dead By RANDY MINKOFF UPI Sports Writer CHICAGO (UPI) White Sox President Bill Veeck says he thinks American League owners may hope they can keep Chicago a "patsy" by blocking the sale of the team to multi-millionaire Edward DeBartolo.

However, Veeck will not concede the proposed $20 million sale, to be voted upon again by American League owners next Thursday, is dead. "1 really can't think of any other reason there is opposition, except that some of the owners don't want to see this team prosper. They want us to remain patsies, 1 guess," Veeck said Friday. "I can't predict what is going to happen. 1 do know this team is stronger than it was 60 days ago." Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn said in New York Friday, Veeck's statement was "contemptible, irresponsible and false." DeBartolo fell two votes short of the required 10 votes needed to approve the sale at a league meeting in late October.

Since then, he has promised to divest himself of race track interests and establish a part-time residence in Chicago to answer criticism from Kuhn. Kuhn responded to DeBartoIo's offer Thursday, saying the Ohio businessman's "pressure" on owners "would greatly disservice your cause." Veeck conceded DeBar- toIo's financial assistance in helping sign two free agents, outfielder Ron LeFlore and catcher Jim Essian, may wind up backfiring in the attempt to sell the club. "It's a possibility," Veeck said. "We've never before been able to sign free agents because we didn't have the scratch." Veeck took the opportunity to discuss the sale at a news conference introducing both LeFlore and Essian. Knowing he still had additional DeBartolo capital to work with, Veeck said he had hoped to announce the signing of at -least two more free agents Friday.

Mix Clicks In 76er Victory By MARK FRIEDMAN UPI Sports Writer Steve Mix asked only one thing of his teammates Friday night and in the true spirit of the holiday season, everybody was most obliging. "I wanted the ball," said Mix. And he got it frequently. He also scored 16 points in a 10-m'inute span of the first half to carry the Philadelphia 76ers to a 104-100 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. "1 don't know how many points 1 had.

I just knew they were going in and I wanted the He finished the game with 23 points and Julius Erving added 18 as the 76ers were forced to fight off a spirited comeback by the Hawks. John Drew hit a layup with 3:16 remaining to bring Atlanta to within 94-92, but the Sixers followed with an 8-2 spurt and Lionel Hollins' layup with 1:33 remaining clinched the victory. Darryl Dawkins added 16 points for the Sixers, who have won 12 of their last 13 games. Drew led all scorers with 28 points and Collins added 23. "The name of the game is win and that's what we've been doing," said Erving, who was asked about Philadelphia's recent tendency to relax after building up large leads.

"We don't have to make excuses for a winning game We certainly have nothing to be ashamed of." (UPI) Oakland Raiders' quarterback Dan Pastorini has denied a published report that cocaine was found in one of his pockets last week after he was stopped for speeding near Cupertino, Calif.

The report, Hied by a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy, said after Pastorini was cited, a routine search uncovered a plastic vial containing a white powder later determined to be cocaine. After Pastorini was stopped, Deputy Steve Carr told a San Jose newspaper a check showed Pastorini had failed to post bail on a previous speeding ticket. In such cases, suspcts are routinely taken to the sheriff's department headquarters in San Jose, where they may avoid being booked into jail by paying the outstanding bail, which Pastorini did. All suspects are searched. Sheriff's officers said a search could be made only for weapons and they wrote on the report "invalid search" and issued no complaint.

"They didn't take the vial off me," Pastorini sai(J Friday. "I don't know who is trying to start something here, but that's totally false." PHILADELPHIA (UPI) Wilt Chamberlain, the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, wSj be on hand Wednesday nightijjfhen the PbiladelpMa eir 19fi6-67 world team, fee By MARK FRIEDMAN UPI Sports Writer A victory over the New York Jets Sunday would give the Cleveland Browns a one-game lead over Houston in the rugged AFC Central. But more than that, it would make Marshall Harris a very happy man. The Jets are not high on the rookie defensive end's Christmas list and nothing would please Harris more than a victory over his former employers. Harris has been outstanding for the Browns this season and has contributed greatly in shoring up a once-porous defnse.

He walked out on the Jets during summer camp last year, convinced he had little chance to win a spot on the defensive line. Harris claims he tried to come back to the club in December but the Jets told him to forget it. He also maintains the Jets tried their best to prevent him from playing elsewhere, in the NFL. "It really rankles me the way the Jets treated me," said Harris. "They just about told me outright I wasn't good enough for their ballclub However, "we made every effort to help Marshall Harris get a job with another team," a Jets' spokesman says.

"We were not trying to make it difficult for him. We just want it clarified that we contacted a lot of teams to heip Marshall." In addition to the shoddy treatment Harris claims the Jets dished out, he was also angered over New York's attitude over a $5,500 signing bonus he originally received from the Jets. "Last December they said nothing about returning the bonus and the personnel director said 95 percent of the time they never ask for it back," said Harris. "But as soon as I made the Browns, they started trying to get it back. I already had spent half of it.

They've been harping on me and 1 just recently sent it back because they were going to file a lawsuit against me." The Jets claim the big defensive end "did sign a promissory note to return the bonus." Harris undoubtedly plans to get his money's worth on the field Sunday. Elsewhere Sunday, Atlanta is at Philadelphia, Dallas at Oakland, Los Angeles at Buffalo, Baltimore at Cincinnati, Denver at Kansas City, Detroit at St. Louis, Bay at Chicago, Minnesota at Tampa Bay, w.inless New Orleans at San Francisco, i San Diego at Washington and the New York Giants at Seattle. Miami entertains New England Monday night. PHILADELPHIA (UPI) The Philadelphia Flyers Friday traded defenseman Norm Barnes to the Hartford Whalers for future considerations.

A Flyers' spokeswoman said the deal was related to the Nov. 20 trade that sent defenseman Jack Mcllhargey to the Whalers, also for future considerations; DON'T DEPARTMENT STORE SUPER 24-PAGE SUPPLEMENT IN THIS NEWSPAPER 4 BIG DAYS-SUNDAY THRU WEDNiSDAY!
