Sports Page 2d Monday, April 26, 1999 The Sun Olympics The quiz Sports Digest fans smashed windows, looted stores and attacked riot police after Feynoord Rotterdam's championship. Hundreds of extra police were brought into the city before the game with NAC Breda, which ended in a 2-2 tie and gave Feynoord its first Dutch league title since 1993. Manin, former chief of IOC, dies at age 84 Afghanistan. When he left in 1980, the IOC was on the verge of bankruptcy and the Olympics were threatened with extinction. Since then his successor, Spain's Juan Antonio Samaranch, has turned the Olympics into a multibillion-dollar industry.

"I feel very sad, because I worked beside him for a long time and became his successor," Samaranch said. "He had been very ill, and IOC has done everything possible to help him and his wife." Killanin was born Michael Morris in London on July 30, 1914. His mother was Australian and his father was an officer in the Irish Guards. "He was a charismatic and dynamic individual who was passionate about every task he took on," Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said. "We are deeply indebted to him and his family for his long years of public service to Irish sport." He was educated at Eton College, the Sorbonne in Paris and at Cambridge University, before embarking on a career in journalism, in 1935.

He worked as a war correspondent in China in 1937 and after the war wrote a political column. He later became a film producer, making such movies as "The Playboy of the Western World" and "The Quiet Man." He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. He was president during turbulent era of 1972-80 ASSOCIATED PRESS DUBLIN, Ireland Lord Kil-lanin, president of the International Olympic Committee during one of its most turbulent periods, died yesterday. He was 84. Killanin, who had been 111 for some time, died at his home in Dublin, his family said.

The cause of death was not announced. He became president of the IOC in 1972, taking over from American Avery Brun-dage just after the massacre of Israeli athletes and coaches at the Munich Olympics. In his first year as president, women became eligi ble for IOC Killanin membership. And unlike Brun-dage, Killanin accepted that change in the amateur status of Olympic athletes was inevitable. The Munich massacre was followed in 1976 by the African boycott of the Montreal Olympics, and in 1980 the United States led a boycott of the Moscow Olympics to protest the Soviet invasion of Auto na Spirlea of Romania, 6-1, 6-0.

The result ended a 50-game U.S. domestic unbeaten streak and gave the U.S. a 1-2 record in recent matches against China as both teams prepare for the Women's World Cup, which will begin June 19 in the United States. "We left China some openings at the end of the game," said U.S. coach Tony DiCicco.

"We lost our shape on defense. We wanted to win but it was not a must win game for us. They're going to make us a better team." The U.S. scored its goal when Cindy Parlow passed it to Julie Foudy, who dribbled past a defender and chipped a short shot over the head of Chinese goalie Gao Hong. The U.S.

NASCAR.from Page Id eighth Winston Cup win here. Earnhardt has also won one Busch event and three IROC races at Talladega, including a 38-lapper on Saturday. A small vibration late in the race caused Earnhardt and his Richard Childress Racing crew some worry. To ensure everything was all right, crew chief Kevin Hamlin decided to change four tires while most of the other teams were changing two. Earnhardt came into the pits on lap 134 leading and came out in 16th place.

But it didn't take him long to get back up front after the green flag on lap 140. In fact, he was back in the lead on lap 148. There was some more shuffling, but Earnhardt took the lead for the last time on lap 175, making a strong outside pass on Jarrett, who slid from first to fourth. It took Jarrett's Ford until lap 185 to work his way back to second. The winner of the fall race here in 1998 then went after Earnhardt.

Jarrett managed to get up to his bumper several times, but never was able to pull alongside.
