A ad THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, SATURDAY MORNING. SEPTEMBER .2. 1950 Religious Notices Religious Notices PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL Religious Notices PRESBYTERIAN Religious Notices LUTHERAN Religious Notices BRETHREN Sunday School Lesson A Disciple Who Was Afraid And Afterward Was Restored By REV. ROBI RT O. KEVIN, Ph.D.

The theme of this lessor is: Peter, Who Became a Man of Power. The Scripture Lesson is: Acts The Golden Text is: "Peter and the apostles answered, We must obey God rather than nen." Acts 5:29. For the followers of there are varying degrees of intimacy with Him. Every parish, each town and city has some who are devoted disciples of the Master. They make up the nucleus Blessing Rite At Parsonage A special blessing service marking the completion of the first of three major building projects at St.

Paul's Lutheran Church in Ardmore will be held tomorrow. The ceremony will follow the regular morning worship service at the new parsonage, Athens ave. and Sussex rd. Charles F. Bartlett, president of the church council, will turn over the keys of the parsonage to Rev.

Donald G. Doll, associate pastor of St. Paul's, who will occupy the new structure. Rev. Dr.

Albert C. Kan-zinger, pastor, will conduct the special service which begins at noon. The church's new Sunday School building, which covers about 4000 square feet, will be completed soon. Sessions in this structure are ex PROTEST ANT FPISCOPAL. GENERAL EISENHOWER RECENTLY HAD THIS TO SAY ABOUT WORKERS AND THE CHURCH "What the church should be telling the worker is that the first demand religion makes of him is that he should be a good workman.

If be is a carpenter he should be a competent carpenter. Church by all means on Sundays but what is the use of church if at the Terr, center of life man defrauds his neighbor and insults God by poor craftsmanship." Each year on the Sunday before I-alwr Day the Rector speaks directly to Labor in CHRIST CHURCH ST. MICHAEUS Tulpehocken and McCallum Streets (6200 N. on Gtn. 1 sq.

west) W. HAMILTON AULENBACH, In His ANNUAL LABOR DAT Sermon This Sunday at 11 A. M. when he speaks on "HAS LABOR GONE GODLESS?" 8 P. M.

EVENING SERVICE These late summer evenings spent in church leave a spiritual benediction in your heart. The Rector repeats, by popular request, a sermon first preached to a morning congregation a few weeks ago "TWO MINUTES UP THERE'S SUNSHINE" A sermon to put sunshine in your soul) Ood bless you see you in church I RALLY 'ROUND THE EPISCOPAL HOSPITAL Believing there are thousands of people In this city who want to see the Eplsco pal Hospital kept aa a church hospital at Front Lehigh, the Rector Is asking for letters from 1,000 people expressing this opinion to snow to those who have said to him "You arc all alone in this issue." If you believe the Episcopal Hospital should remain a church hospital at Front ft Lenigh Avenue write the Kector a note tonight. If you can't take time for a letter a postcard will do but do it tonight GROWTH Is the product of desire PLUS effort. Good Intentions alone won't bring peace or any-thnig else we desire. Are you putting enough effort Into your religion to keep it growing? ST.

Camden, K. J. of a congregation. They are those among whcm the Holy Spirit dwells. Upon them a pastor can utterly depend.

But there are others whose service is more perfunctory and formal, and still others remain Christians only in name. Something like this was true during Jesus' earthly ministry. We read of great crowds who came to see and to hear Him. But there were smaller groups of greater intimaiy and loyalty. Once He sent out 70 to proclaim the Gospel.

Then there were 12 especially close to Him. Bat among these, Peter, James and John seem to have been His neartst companions and friends. Even these were uncertain disciples. James and John wanted chief eats for themselves. Peter was ir.i- i pulsive and wavering.

He once swore loyalty to Jesus and then denied Him. But the Resurrection changed them all. Where earlier they hud been weak and cowardly, afterwa they were made strong. And Petir was strengthened especially wi the power of the Holy Spirit. THE LESSON 1.

Peter's sermon in Jerusalem (Acts 4: 8-12.) 2. Council of the authorities (vss. 13-16.) 3. Attempt to kill the Gospel, (vss. 17-20.) 1.

HEAD OF THE CORNER Peter had helped, after Pentecoft, to heal a man who had been lame. He was an impotent soul who had not walked from birth. It was tl Risen Christ, however, who restored the man to health. Peter boldly told the leaders of the people that Jesus whom they had crucified was resurrected by the power of God. "The stone which was set ht nought of you builders is become tr head of the corner," Peter said.

Tre Christ they crucified became tie exalted Messiah, and there was ro other name under heaven whereby salvation could come to men. Peter had seen this happen and neve again could he deny the truth. WITH JESUS "Then the rulers, when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant, they marvelled; and they took knowledge tf them, that they had been witi Jesus." This was the secret of power in the Apdstolic Age. It was a witness of the Kingdom of Got that friends as well as enemies coul 1 recognize. It is a power that was manifest in the Apostolic Age but it is not limited to that time.

Men and women who live closely to Christ, learning of Him daily and being sustained by Him, are able to speak boldly the rulers of this world and proclaim the judgment and the mercy of God. S. THREAT OF HARM Persecutors sometimes back down when they are confronted with a show of spiritual strength. So happened before Peter and John. The authorities in Jerusalem supposed they could use threats to silence the proclamation of th; Gospel.

They forbade the disciples to speak again of their Lord and Master. But Christians were those who would obey God rather than men. Whatever the threats or the punish ments that might be visited, they saw the power of God in their very midst and they would not deny Him again. Peter became a martyr. he did.

Christians can die today thai Christ's name may be made known. on eopyrtihted outline produced The international Council of Religious Educa tlon and uied by Guest Pastors To Fill Many Pulpits Here Many nationally and internationally-known clergymen will occupy pulpits as guest preachers in churches in the Philadelphia area tomorrow on Labor Sunday, traditionally marking the beginning of intensified fall worship services.
