Following the routine opening and a short business meeting, the program on Florida got underway with response to roll call being the name of a city in Florida and some incident unique to each other. AS all the women but one had been to Florida, several having spent whole winters there.

Their replies made an appropriate introduction. The main program was conductedbyMrs. Ruth Ramsey who recently returned from her fourth winter at Tarpon Springs. Tarpon Springs is the sponge capital of the world. While synthetic sponges are widely used now, there are still some industries that require the use of the natural sponge.

She told of the sponge divers and their auctions where sponges are sold by lot according to grade, quality and size. She told of the shrimp boats, charter boats, deep sea fishing in the bay and the commercial fishermen. She also told about her husband catching a 12 Ib. grouper which they had made into filets and provided them with quite a few meals. The city was settled by the Greeks who are sponge divers and it reflects the Greek culture.

Greek food is predominant in the restaurants there. One of the largest Greek Orthodox churches in America is in Tarpon Springs. St.Nicko- las is the patron saint of the sponge divers. In the church is a beautiful icon which was painted by an artist in Greece. In 1969, a cleaning lady was scrubbing at the foot of the icon and noticed that it was weeping tears.

She immediately made it known and artists, chemists and scientists were called in but no one could explain the phenomenon. It is still weeping. In January, a large festival commemorating Epiphany and featuring a street parade is held and the icon is carried under a canopy by priests. A dove, signifying purity and peace, is released and soars toward heaven. One year recently the dove soared into the air and returned to rest on the headdress of the archbishop.

This was considered by devout Greeks to be some kind of an omen. Antique cars are also featured in the parade. Mrs. Ramsey's talk was informative and was well received by her audience. Those who attended were Mrs.

Alberta Wambaugh, Mrs. Catherine Long, Mrs, Ola Stapleton, Mrs. Helen Gracey, Mrs. Martha Dixon, Mrs. Ramsey and Mrs.

Elder.
