The Quakers, then leading, 17-14, pushed Lafayette back to its own 10-yard line where the situation was third-and-15. But second-team quarterback Scott Sautter, in the game because starter Gary Uzelac sprained a knee in the first half, heaved up a pass that end Jim Flani-gan caught on his fingertips and carried to the Penn 49. After a loss back to the 50, Lafayette scored on a flea-flicker lateral, with tailback Ed Rogusky passing 50 yards to tight end Rich Smith for the touchdown.

Smith juggled the ball but had firm possession when he crossed the goal line. When kicker Dave Heverling missed the conversion, leaving the score at 20-17, it set up the tough decision on the field goal for Gamble at the end of the game. Lafayette took an intentional safety with 31 seconds left to create the final 20-19, score. Lafayette had jumped out to a 14-0 lead, when Uzelac hit Smith with a seven-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and Sautter hit Rogusky with a 32-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Penn moved back for one score with the second-half kickoff, Phil Avila scoring from the three.

On the next Lafayette series, Penn's Kevin Weir intercepted a Sautter pass and returned it 30 yards to the Lafayette 16. That set up a two-yard touchdown by Dennis Grosvenor. who gained 178 yards for the afternoon. That gave Grosvenor a season total of 465 yards, within striking distance of Gary Santini's school record of 880 yards in 1968. Grosvenor now has 1,465 yards in his career, fifth on the all-time Penn list.

But offense is not Penn's problem stopping other people is the problem. "A tie means more than losing," said offensive tackle Barry Berenson 'later, "but there's no reason why we should lose to a team like Lafayette." Inquirer Staff Writer EASTON It will be remembered as the day Pennsylvania refused to 'play for a tie. That's unfortunate, since Coach Harry Gamble's decision to run for first down on a fourth-and-10 situation, rather than kick a tying field goal, really wasn't the story. Defensive lapses cost Penn a 20-19 loss to Lafayette yesterday, in a game where the Quakers came from be- 1 hind, and then let the win slip away. i And, lurking in the background, is the spurned tie.

"A tie is nothing," Gamble said later. "We came here to The Quakers entered the final 'segment of an entertaining game trailing, 20-17. They had moved from their own 24 to the Lafayette 22, where they had a first down. a motion penalty set them back, and on fourth down Penn still needed 10 yards for a first down. Standing on the sideline was kicker John Dwyer, who earlier had given the Quakers a lead with a 45-yard field goal.

This one would be a 39-yarder, well within Dwyer's range. "I really didn't expect to go in," Dwyer said. "I'm not the coach, but in his position, I'd have made the same decision." Gamble's decision was to try to get the first down. He sent in reserve quarterback Tony Sciciolla, normally Dwyer's holder, but the offense lined up to go for it. Sciciolla attempted a quarterback draw, which gained six yards four short, La- fayette got the ball on downs with one minute 52 seconds left.

"Kicking the field goal ran through my mind," Gamble said, "but I wanted to win the game. I didn't think we'd get another chance." Gamble, courteous and receptive as always despite the shocking loss to his former team, refused to second-guess himself. "You want to win. That's when the decision counts," he said. "Afterward don't count.

Wichita State's Joe Williams, aided by a gusty tail wind, booted a 67-yard field goal with four seconds to play yesterday, giving him a share of the NCAA record for longest field goal. "I ran up to Coach (Jim) Wright and asked him to give me the chance," said Williams, whose Shockers whipped Southern Illinois, 33-7. "I was within my range with this wind.

This wind really is something. "I'm from Mississippi and all we have there is humidity." The wind was estimated at 18 m.p.h., gusting to 26, and the afternoon high temperature of 89 set a record for the city for the day. Asked if going for a field goal with four seconds remaining and leading 30-7 was an attempt to run up the score, Wright responded: "The way coaching is now? Never. I just wanted to see Joe get the chance to kick it." Williams, a junior transfer, has connected on nine of 16 field goals this season. His longest previously was a 48-yarder.

Williams tied the record of Russell Erxleben of Texas and Steve Little of Arkansas.
