SUNDAY. JVIV 11 Vp 1.1 1 i.7.1-:;WJj.jj By Bill Simmons -j Inquirer Auto Editor LONG POND, Pa. Johnny Parsons who never has started a 500-mile race higher than 12th, is planning a surprise for the other 32 drivers at the 1 p.m. start of today's sixth annual Schaefer 500. Parsons, 29, the son of the 19S0 Indianapolis 500 winner, declined to elaborate, but indicated he would opt for a rather slow start from the pole position, which he won in last week's lottery.

"I know Gordy (Johncock) likes a fast start his car seems to work better," Parsons said in response to Johncock's unsolicited advice that the best thing he can do is go as fast as he can. "But I think I might have a litile surprise for everybody," he added with a sly grin. The chances are greater that Parsons and Billy Vukovich, the son of another former Indy champ, who is starting in the middle of the front row, will be the surprised ones. On the outside of that row is local favorite Mario Andretti, whom just about everybody with the possible exception of Parsons expects to lead into the first turn. In fact, the luck (good or bad) of the draw has created a lineup that makes for a first-turn traffic jam, at best.

And that is further back than today's most unlikely winner will be starting. Janet Guthrie, the 38-year-old New York physicist who had the slowest practice speed of about 168 m.p.h. in her Bryant-Vollstedt-Offy, is in 22d position, on the inside of the eighth row. "I won't have to be super cautious like I was at Trenton," said Guthrie, who will be the first woman to com wuiiNaoiM MANAC.IMINT AddrCSS- Statp ZiP I I Cily Whitehall is it member of The Vanguard Croup of Investment Companies. RIGUIAR CARS AIL THESE SIZES! Parsons, whose best finish in eight previous 500-milers was 14th in last month's rain-shortened Indianapolis race, has every hope of leading into the first turn. "The rest of the guys will really have to be hustling to keep up with me," he said bravely. But if Andretti does what's expected to him, he will lead a veritable cavalry charge from behind. In the middle of the second row is A. J.

Foyt, twice the winner of this race and the United States Auto Club's all-time victory leader. Adding to Foyt's credentials is the fact that his Gilmore-Coyote-Foyt has consistently been the fastest car in practice on Pocono International Raceway's trioval. Foyt, who has won six SQO-mile races over the last 15 years, turned in the fastest lap almost 186 m.p.h. a week ago, before time trials were rained out, necessitating USAC's first lottery qualifying. Directly behind Foyt is 1973 Indy winner Johncock, who has earned a reputation as a flying starter.

So the outlook at the front shapes up like this: Andretti should pull away, opening the door for Foyt to follow and for Johncock to charge through right behind him. As exciting as that figures to be, things should be even wilder back in the middle of the lineup, where four of the fastest drivers are bunched. On the inside of the fifth row is Tom Sneva's Norton-McLaren-Offy, a sister car to Andretti's Cam2-Mc-Laren. Next to him is Wally Dallen-bach, in a Sinmast-Wildcat-DGS that is identical to Johncock's car. On the outside is Johnny Rutherford, in the Hy-Gain McLaren with which he won this year's Indy race.

And, if that's not enough, right behind that trio on the inside of row sixis Al Unser's American Racing Wheels Parnelli-Cosworth, which has run at better than 185 in practice. SIZES lo nt.
