Dolorosa 5, 7 11 Church Church, St. 4 of Park. on in in 6-C Monday, Aug. 7. 1978 Philadelphia Inquirer Associated Press Tom Watson winces as he misses another putt, his lead evaporating Mahaffey crosses 2 to end streak of LYON, From 1-C walk the fairways forever burdened with that ugliest of brands.

Choker. Two years running, John Mahaffey had blown a major tournament. He had the 1975 U. S. Open at Medinah tucked right in the same pocket with his glove, and then the wheels came off and he lost in an 18- hole playoff to Lou Graham.

One year later, in Atlanta, John Mahaffey again led the Open, with only three holes to play. But he three-putted, he splashed a wood into the water, and Jerry Pate hit a career 5-iron on the last hole, and John Mahaffrey had lost again. His whole life seemed to disintegrate then. He was divorced. He was labeled a loser.

He suffered a hyperextended tendon in his left elbow. They jabbed him wth cortisone shots. Then he fell off a ladder and broke a hand. His personal life was a downer. His golf swing unraveled.

John Mahaffey had hit bottom. Last night, he sat on a platform up press tent, his face swathed in the eerie blue of klieg lights, and he said: "It has been a long road back. A lot of disappointment. Blew two Opens. Personal problems.

Then his last rounds he strung together 67-68-66 a course that has hosted more major championships than a any other in U. S. Oakmont was not completely its usual tough self because it been dampened by three days of But Mahaffey's final 54 holes, par-birdie in the playoff, is knucksdown, guts-up golf on any course.

Mahaffey had played so seldom and so poorly that last year his ings were a meager $9,947. A 30-yearold, 5 feet, 9 inch, 155-pound Texan and the 1970 NCAA champion, Mahaffey's victory yesterday worth $50,000. It boosted his winnings this year to $91,764. And the win guarantees him the security of years of exemption on the tour, means to enter any tournament he has to do is mail in his card. "But it's not the money, not exemption," he said.

"It's the that matters." "My game has improved because I'm concentrating so well. Maybe sounds dumb, but I wasn't aware of anybody else out today. I said I thought Tom could caught not that he would poorly but this is just that kind course. But I never thought it be me who did the catching." It almost wasn't. Pate had PGA won, if he two-putted from feet on the final hole for a par.

he left the first one short, then out the second one. "I hit it dead center," he "I've never seen one spin out that. I could go back out there million times and never three-putt from there again. But, that's golf." Watson thought the game turned around at the 10th He double-bogeyed and Mahaffey drilled a 45-foot birdie putt. "That was a three-shot swing" Watson said.

"Actually, I scored enough. Usually, you can win that position (a 2-over the last but those two guys behind me really played exceptionally. I didn't make very many good swings. I ended steering the ball. "But JD (Mahaffey), he just the greens like they were a table.

He must have made 150 bridges bad luck I've got a healthy marriage. I've a wife who really makes me work. She won't let me off the course it's dark. I guess I went bonkers after that putt, but then, I hadn't had a chance to go bananas in a time." He is an unlikely PGA champion. He has a flat swing.

And he is short hitter, a pop gun among cannons on the tour. But he fairways at Oakmont while the ers were spraying themselves trouble. "After that second Open at Atlanta, I tried to change my swing So could hit it further. I did. I also it further off line.

"All I worried about today tempo and composure. I think matured, learned from what pened. Before I out-thought myself, looked too far ahead. I know that you can't make yourself get too anxious, too aggresive. have to let yourself win.

What pened to me, maybe it was for best. When I first came out everything was too easy for me. didn't appreciate what I had. Now do." That happens sometimes, you cross over the bridge. Continued from 19.
