for specifications by August 15, 197 Equa Opportunity Organization, PGA, From 1-C PGA with a 75. Then his last three rounds he strung together 67-68-66 on a course that has hosted more major chanionships than any other in the U. S. Oakmont was not completely its usual tough self because it had been dampened by three days of rain. But Mahaffey's final 54 holes, plus par-birdie in the playoff, is knucks-down, guts-up golf on any course.

Mahaffey had played so seldom and so poorly that last year his earnings were a meager $9,947. A 30-year-old, feet, 9 inch, ISS-pound Texan and the 1970 NCAA champion, Mahaffey's victory yesterday was worth $50,000. It boosted his winnings this year to $91,764. And the win also guarantees him the security of 10 years of exemption on the tour, which means to enter any tournament all he has to do is mail' in his card. "But it's not the money, not the exemption," he said.

"It's the win that matters." "My game has improved because I'm concentrating so well. Maybe it sounds dumb, but I wasn't even aware of anybody else out there today. I said I thought Tom could be caught not that he would play poorly but this is just that kind of course. But I never thought it would be me who did the catching." It almost wasn't. Pate had the PGA won, if he two-putted from 18 feet on the final hole for a par.

But he left the first one short, then lipped out the second one. "I hit it dead center," he said. "I've never seen one spin out like that. I could go back out there 18 million times and never three-putt from there again. But, that's golf." Watson thought the game turned around at the 10th He double-bo-geyed and Mahaffey drilled a 45-foot birdie putt.

"That was a three-shot swing" Watson said. "Actually, I scored well enough. Usually, you can win from that position (a 2-over the last day) but those two guys behind me really played exceptionally. I didn't make very many good swings. I ended up steering the ball.

"But JD (Mahaffey), he just ran the greens like they were a pool table. He must have made 150 feet bridges I've got a healthy marriage. I've got a wife who really makes me work. She won't let me off the course until it's dark. I guess I went bonkers after that putt, but then, I hadn't had a chance to go bananas in a long time." He is an unlikely PGA champion.

He has a flat swing. And he is a short hitter, a pop gun among the cannons on the tour. But he split fairways at Oakmont while the belters were spraying themselves into trouble. "After that second Open at Atlanta, I tried to change my swing so I could hit it further. I did.

I also hit it further off line. "All I worried about today was tempo and composure. I think I've matured, learned from what happened. Before I out-thought myself, looked too far ahead. I know now that you can't make yourself win, get too anxious, too aggresive.

You have to let yourself win. What happened to me, maybe it was for the best. When I first came out here, everything was too easy for me. I didn't appreciate what I had. Now I do." That happens sometimes, when you cross over the bridge.

Choker. Two years running, John Mahaffey had blown a major tournament. He had the 1975 U. S. Open at Me-dinah tucked right in the same pocket with his glove, and then the wheels came off and he lost in an 18-hole playoff to Lou Graham.

One year later, in Atlanta, John Mahaffey again led the Open, with only three holes to play. But he three-putted, he splashed a wood into the water, and Jerry Pate hit a career 5-iron on the last hole, and John Mahaffrey had lost again. His whole life seemed to disintegrate then. He was divorced. He was labeled a loser.

He suffered a hyper-extended tendon in his left elbow. They jabbed him wth cortisone shots. Then he fell off a ladder and broke a hand. His personal life was a downer. His golf swing unraveled.

John Mahaffey had hit bottom. Last night, he sat on a platform up in the press tent, his face swathed in the eerie blue of klieg lights, and he said: "It has been a long road back. A lot of disappointment. Blew two Opens. Personal problems.

Scoreboard Golf Bobby Cote, Tom Purtier, Injuries. But this this wipes it all out. I honestly fel that I deserve it." He does. And the two players he beat gracious in defeat themselves agreed. "I don't feel all that bad losing," said Jerry Pate, "because you don't know how much John has gone through.

I almost feel responsible for what happened to him. I mean, I'm the guy who kind of put it to him in Atlanta, and it seemed like that was what destroyed him." And Tom Watson, who was close to John Drayton Mahaffey, said: "I'm glad for him. JD is so emotional, so intense. We've talked about winning majors before, and gentlemen, he did it in style. He beat the course and he beat Jerry and he beat me." Mahaffey has re-married, and his new wife, Susie, sat next to him, clutching yellow roses and her husband's putter.

Mahaffey had dropped the putter when that 12-footer dropped. And he war-danced across the green, embracing his caddie. Susie Mahaffey, amidst all the madness, quietly retrieved the putter. "I'm healthy now," he said, "and 75- 73-73-74-795 72- 70-78-75 79S 71- 75-71-78-295 76- 71-75-74-296 73- 71-77-75-796 72- 74-71-79-296 74- 67-77-77 797 75- 77-73-78 7i 73- 73-74-79 299 74- 71-72-81300 74-72-77-77-300 74- 72-77-77-300 75- 77-77-74300 76- 72-73-79300 74-74-73-80-301 74-72-77-78303 0-74-76-DO 70-75-80-DQ Beth Stone, $523 Joyce Kaimierski, $435 Louise Bruce, $435 Pam Higgins, $405 Dot Germain, 5352 Navoko Roberta Speer, 53S2 Mickey Walker, 5352 Judy Clark, 5352 Karotvn Kertiman, 5305 Christine Langtord, 5J0S MJ.
