6-C Thursday, Feb. 26, 1976 Philadelphia Inquirei THE ARTS- 'Taxi' awaits you Outside theater Sinatra Quiz 2 This one's even tougher lass Jul "AWA' 1 fill 'iSJ: I 11 When Sid Mark of WWDB and the members of his "Sinatra Club" went to New York to see 01' Blue Eyes perform they filled 14 chartered buses. "It looked like a raid!" said their hero, Frank Sinatra. Of 500 charter members of the club, 407 made the trip by chartered jet to watch their man perform in Las Vegas. With dedicated fans like that, the competition is bound to be tough for first prize in The Inquirer's 01' Blue Eyes contest.

Quizmaster Sid, and his adviser on motion picture questions, Larry Swindell, have tossed in some toughies that only the most devoted of Sinatraphiles could be expected to know. Here's how the contest works: Ten questions appeared in yesterday's Inquirer; 10 more appear today and the final 10 will be published Friday. You've got to clip each day's questions; write out your answers; place all the material in a single envelope and mail it to: 01' Blue Eyes Contest The Philadelphia Inquirer Box 8255 Philadelphia 19101 Prizes for free tickets and free dinners to Sinatra's perform- ances May 27-30 at the latin Casino will be awarded on the basis of the earliest, most correct entries. In the case of ties, winners will be determined by lot. Employes of Philadelphia Newspapers Inc.

and their families are ineligible. Answers and winners' names will be announced in The Inquirer on March 9. Here are today's questions: 1. When was Nancy Jr. born? 2.

Who replaced Sinatra as featured singer with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra? 3. On whom, in which movie and in which year did Sinatra bestow his first motion picture kiss? 4. What was the name and the year of Sinatra's first radio show of his own? 5. Name the singer whom Sinatra replaced on radio's "Your Hit 6. In which three films did Sinatra appear with Gene Kelly? 7.

For which song did Sinatra himself write the lyrics? 8. When was Frank Jr. born? 9. In one of Frank's films, he played a priest. Name the movie and the year.

10. Sinatra has one gold single. Name it. By Desmond Ryan Inauirar Movie Critic It is an axiom bordering on the hackneyed to suggest that it requires more than a little madness to drive a eab amid the menace and jammed chaos" of Manhattan's streets. 5'TVTartin Scorsese's remorseless film, "Taxi Driver," the New Yorjf'cabbie is not the creature of resilience and the butt of starts -night-club routines.

He is, in-steatk an unmetered psychotic. Driver" is a movie about many- things, perhaps too many to sustain the pent-up fury that threatens to overwhelm the viewer with the bleakness of its vision. It treats of torhiented sexuality, fantasy, ungov-erired anger, the slime in the gutters of our big cities, the predators and victims and perverts, and it works its "Strange alchemy with riveting force. There are many reasons for its cogent success, chief among them the choice of the taxi driver as an alienated participant a man who is in the world of Times Square and the East Village but not of it. Robert De Niro presents a madman who feels himself to be drowning in scdmj a Vietnam veteran turned taxi driver possessed by Calvinist contempt for the rutting around him and forced to wipe semen off the back seat after a night shift.

He loathes what is around him and yet spends his recreation with junk food and porn movies. He hates, and he is mad with sublimed sexual drives he cannot acknowledge. He is mad but no one is near enough to notice and his rage will find some outlet. Scorsese and De Niro succeed on two 'levels: They have evoked a gotfshly real New York and its night people with an all too clear eye and they force one to enter their creation. It is not a pleasant experience! De Niro is Travis Bickle who, as drawn by screenwriter Paul Schrader, is the sort of man who pulls a gun on presidential candidates.

"Taxi Driver" is a trip around Travis' mind that is neither didactic nor particularly explanatory. It is simply a statement about him and the world he inhabits. The film purposely, according to Scorsese is replete with religious overtones in which the final unhinging of Travis' mind is brought about by a Virgin MaryMary Magdalene syndrome. The former is Cybill Shepherd, a blonde and aloof worker in a presidential campaign, and the latter is Jodie Foster, a 12-year-old prostitute plying her trade with a blase veneer of sophistication. Travis' total inability to deal with women is simply an extension.

of his recalcitrant dealings with a society, that affords him no welcome and no niche. He is condemned to "go anywhere" as he repeatedly says, to drive exhausting shifts because he has nowhere to go. The consequence of this, as perceived by Scorsese and Schrader, are both puritanical and homicidal. Travis appears armed to the teeth at a presidential rally, an embodiment of the Bremers and Rays of this world. Should he pull the trigger here or seek a more private vengeance? It would spoil the film's considerable impact to go further other than to say I found the political overtones of "Taxi Driver" superfluous to the movie's real point.

With this extraordinary film, Scorsese confirms his standing among our finest young directors. It is, among other things, a testament to the versatility that last produced "Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More." "Taxi Driver" concludes with almost orgasmic violence with Travis and his pistol intruding on a life he cannot affect and, what is worse, with the experience having scant effect on him. He is rendered and I mean the word with abbatoir literalism as it affects his mind into a pop hero and that is the most galling irony of this dark and brilliant film. You leave Travis at the Budco Regency, but you know he is waiting in the streets outside. De Niro: taxi driver as alienated participant 'Blue eyes' fires back with his rejoinder and not worth reading which you inaccurately describe as "political" comments.

I must conclude that your definition of "free speech" is that this right is limited to newspapers. In fact, if you had it "your way," the right to "preach" would be reserved to incompetents like yourself who "are not good in their field and have not made it under the American system." I am happy to live in a country where the American way" gives me and everyone else the right to make In a column that appeared in the Inquirer last Wednesday, columnist Bill Curry, after seeing Frank Sinatra perform at the Latin Casino, remarked that he wished Sinatra would sing the songs and leave the political commentaries up to those with less questionable backgrounds." The following is Sinatra's reply to Curry: February 20, 1976 OPEN LETTER TO BILL CURRY My attention has been directed to your obscure column in the February 18, 1976 edition of the "Philadelphia Inquirer" in which you complain (it is more like a that many entertainers (like myself) "think that just because they are good in their field and have made it under the American system that they have the right to preach The "preaching" you refer to are certain comments I may choose to make "on stage" about certain newspapers and so-called "journalists" that I think are incompetent, unfair critical remarks about any subjedt we choose to talk about and the right not to listen. The penalty we gladly pay for this privilege is that in order to read what is playing at the thea- -ters in Philadelphia, we are subject to finding on the opposite page your column full of drivel, inaccuracies (I note your apology to Base Camp) and snide remarks (like your "cheap shot" at District Attorney Emmett Fitzpatrick).
